Autogenic processes are widely found in various sedimentary systems and they play an important role in the depositional evolution and corresponding sedimentary architecture. However, autogenic processes are often affected by changing allogenic factors and are difficult to be identified and analyzed from modern and ancient records. Through the flume tank experiment under constant boundary conditions, the depositional process, evolution principles, and the sedimentary architecture of a river-dominated delta was presented, and a corresponding sedimentary architecture model was constructed. The evolution of river-dominated delta controlled only by autogenic process is obviously periodic, and each autogenic cycle can be divided into an initial progradational stage, a middle retrogratational stage, and a late aggradational–progradational stage. In the initial progradational stage, one feeder channel incised into the delta plain, mouth bar(s) was formed in front of the channel mouth, and small-scale crevasse splays were formed on the delta plain. In the middle retrogradational stage, the feeder channel was blocked by the mouth bar(s) which grew out of water at the end of the initial stage, and a set of large-scale distributary splay complexes were formed on the delta plain. These distributary splay complexes were retrogradationally overlapped due to the continuous migration of the bifurcation point of the feeder channel. In the late aggradational–progradational stage, the feeder channel branched into several radial distributary channels, overlapped distributary channels were formed on the delta plain, and terminal lobe complexes were formed at the end of distributary channels. The three sedimentary layers formed in the three stages constituted an autogenic succession. The experimental delta consisted of six autogenic depositional successions. Dynamic allocation of accommodation space and the following adaptive sediments filling were the two main driving factors of the autogenic evolution of deltas.

Lacustrine mixed carbonate/siliciclastic sediment is an important type of oil and gas reservoir with significant potential. Although previous studies have investigated the sedimentary characteristics of the mixed depositional system in numerous oil and gas-bearing basins worldwide, a detailed sedimentary architecture model is still lacking for guiding reservoir characterization at the hydrocarbon reservoir scale. In this paper, a typical lacustrine mixed carbonate/siliciclastic sedimentary system, preserved in the lower member of the ShangGanchaigou Formation, Neogene, in the western Qaidam Basin, Western China, was deeply investigated based on well logging data from 640 wells, 438 m of cores from 3 core wells, and outcrop studies. The results demonstrate that 1) seven types of architecture elements, namely, distributary channel, channel mouth bar, distal bar, sheet-like sand, shallow water mud, algal mound, and marl flat characterized by different lithofacies associations, were recognized based on core and well logging data. 2) The lacustrine mixed carbonate/siliciclastic depositional system can be divided into three facies belts. Along the lakeward direction, the proximal facies belt is dominated by delta front deposits and characterized by gradually downstream bifurcating distributary channels and associated lateral amalgamated delta lobes. The middle facies belt is characterized by isolated and small-scale delta lobes and inter-lobe deposits, including sheet-like sand, small-scale algal mounds, and marl flats, and the distal facies belt is a combination of large-scale algal mounds and marl flats. 3) Within a depression, short-term base-level cycles controlled the facies belt transition, and the proximal, middle, and distal facies belts formed under relatively low, middle, and high base-level conditions, respectively. 4) The scale and connectivity of reservoirs gradually decreased from the proximal to the distal belt.

Since Miall’s architectural element analysis (AEA) was introduced to China in 1986, the method has been widely applied to studying the heterogeneity of oil and gas reservoirs in China. The development history, research field, research progress, and potential limitations of AEA in China have been reviewed based on 601 Chinese documents retrieved from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database and some English documents retrieved from various databases. The development of sedimentary AEA in China experienced four stages: (1) the conceptual and introduction stage (1985–1995), (2) the test and trial stage (1995–2005), (3) the popularization and application stage (2005–2015), and (4) the innovative stage (2015 to present). The research field covers all reservoir types of continental petroliferous basins in China. Papers published on AEA were distributed in the fields of (1) alluvial fan reservoirs, (2) braided channel reservoirs, (3) meandering channel reservoirs, (4) fan delta reservoirs, (5) braided river delta reservoirs, (6) shallow-water delta reservoirs, (7) large-scale delta reservoirs, (8) beach and bar reservoirs, and (9) lacustrine deepwater gravity flow reservoirs. Among all these fields, the architecture of alluvial fans, braided channels, meandering channels, braided river delta, and fan delta reservoirs was mainly researched. AEAs in China have made outstanding innovations in hierarchical sedimentary boundary surface classification, depositional architectural models, and quantitative reservoir architectural modeling. Combining the hierarchical AEA with geostatistical modeling, big data, and artificial intelligence technology and comprehensively using geology, geophysics, and production information to realize the hierarchical integrated reservoir architectural characterization are the development directions of the AEA in China and around the world.
