Cyanobacteria are ever-present, mainly flourishing in aquatic environments and surviving virtually in other habitats. The microbiota of indoor dust on the pre-filter of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, which reflect indoor microbial contamination and affect human health, has attracted attention. Contemporary studies on cyanobacteria deposited on the pre-filter of HVAC remain scant. By the culture-independent approach of qPCR and high throughput sequencing technologies, our results documented that the cyanobacterial concentrations were highest in autumn, occurred recurrently, and were about 2.60 and 10.57-fold higher than those in winter and summer. We proposed that aquatic and terrestrial cyanobacteria contributed to the pre-filter of HVAC by airborne transportation produced by wave breaks, bubble bursts, and soil surface by wind force, owing to the evidence that cyanobacteria were commonly detected in airborne particulate matters. The cyanobacteria community structure was characterized in Shanghai, where Chroococcidiopsaceae, norank_cyanobacteriales, Nostocaceae, Paraspirulinaceae, and others dominated the dust on the pre-filter of HVAC. Some detected genera, including Nodularia sp., Pseudanabaena sp., and Leptolyngbya sp., potentially produced cyanobacterial toxins, which need further studying to determine their potential threat to human health. The present work shed new insight into cyanobacteria distribution in the specific environment besides aquatic habitats.

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is a kind of organic aerosol that efficiently absorbs ultraviolet-visible light and has an impact on climate forcing. We conducted an in-depth field study on ambient aerosols at a monitoring point in Shanghai, China, aiming to investigate the potential emission sources, molecular structures, and the contributions to light absorptions of ambient BrC chromophores. The results indicated that nine molecules were identified as nitroaromatic compounds, five of which (4-nitrophenol, 4-nitrocatechol, 2-nitro-1-naphthol, 3-methyl-4-nitrocatechol, and 2-methyl-4-nitrophenol) usually came from biomass burning or were produced from the photo-oxidation of anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (e.g., toluene, benzene) under high-NOx conditions. 4-nitrophenol was the strongest BrC chromophore and accounted for 13% of the total aerosol light absorption at λ = 365 nm. The estimated light absorption of black carbon was approximately three times the value of methanol-soluble BrC at λ = 365 nm. The ratios of K+/OC and K+/EC, and the correlations with WSOC, OC, HULIS-C and K+, and MAE values of methanol extracts also indicated that the primary emissions from biomass burning contributed more aerosol light absorption compared to the secondary formation during the wintertime in Shanghai. Therefore, biomass burning control is still the most urgent strategy for reducing BrC in Shanghai.

By quantifying the absorption of black carbon (BC), brown carbon (BrC) and the lensing effect, we found that BrC dominates the total absorption at 450 nm, and the largest absorption contribution proportion of BrC could reach 78.3% during heavy pollution. The average absorption enhancement (Eabs) at 530 nm was only 1.38, indicating that BC is not coated well here. The average value of the absorption Ångstrom exponent (AAE) between 450 nm and 530 nm was 5.3, suggesting a high concentration of BrC in Wangdu. CHN+ was the greatest contributor to the light absorption of molecules detected in MSOC with a proportion of 12.2–22.4%, in which the polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs) were the dominant compounds. The C6H5NO3 and its homologous series accounted for 3.0–11.3%, and the C15H9N and its homologous series, including one C16H11N and three C17H13N compounds, accounted for 5.1–12.3%. The absorption of these PANHs is comparable to that of nitro–aromatics, which should attract more attention to the impact of climate radiative forcing.

Excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body can lead to a redox imbalance and result in cellular and tissue damage. Since ROS are highly reactive, traditional offline methods may underestimate their true concentration. In this study, we developed an online monitoring system for particle-bound ROS based on the fluorescent probe 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescin (DCFH), which consists of an Aerosol Collector and a Fluorescence Detector. The performance of the system was evaluated in terms of collection efficiency, instrument calibration, and comparison with offline methods. The results demonstrate that the collection efficiency of the system is over 93%, the calibration correlation coefficient (R2) is 99.75%, and the online system reduces ROS loss due to offline methods by more than 60%. The system has a temporal resolution of 20 min and the limit of detection of the system was 1.9 nmol H2O2/m3. Field observations revealed that particle-bound ROS exhibited similar diurnal variations to O3, and photochemical reactions were the main factors affecting its diurnal variation.

In this study, the chemical compositions of PM2.5 (particulate matter < 2.5 μm) and the molecular compositions of methanol-soluble organic carbon (MSOC) in suburban Shanghai during summer were measured to investigate the molecular characteristics of organic aerosol (OA) under high humidity. Diurnal variation analysis reveals the influence of relative humidity (RH) on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) components. Organosulfates (OSs), particularly nitrooxy-OSs, exhibit a positive correlation with increasing humidity rather than atmospheric oxidants in this high-humidity site. This suggests that high RH can promote the formation of OSs, possibly through enhancing particle surface area and volume, and creating a favorable environment for aqueous-phase or heterogeneous reactions in the particle phase. A considerable proportion of CHOS compounds may be derived from anthropogenic aliphatic hydrocarbon derivatives. These compounds exhibit slightly elevated daytime concentrations due to increased emissions of long-chain aliphatics from sources such as diesel combustion, as well as photochemically enhanced oxidation to OSs. In contrast, CHONS compounds increased at night, driven by high-humidity liquid-phase oxidation. Terpenoid derivatives accounted for 13.4% of MSOC and contributed over 40% to nighttime CHONS. These findings highlight humidity’s important role in driving daytime and nighttime processing of anthropogenic and biogenic precursors to form SOA, even under low SO2 and NOx conditions.
