Titanium, its alloys, and refractory compounds are often used in the compositions of surfacing materials. In particular, under the conditions of electron-beam surfacing the use of synthesized composite powder based on titanium carbide with a metal binder (TiC-Me) has a positive effect. These powders have been prepared via the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) present in a thermally-inert metal binder. The initial carbide particle distribution changes slightly in the surfacing layer in the high-energy rapid process of electron-beam surfacing. However, these methods also have their limitations. The development of technologies and equipment using low-energy sources is assumed. In this case, the question of the structure formation of composite materials based on titanium carbide remains open, if a low-energy and prolonged impact in additive manufacturing will be used. This work reports the investigation of the sintered powders that were previously synthesized by the layerwise combustion mode of a mixture of titanium, carbon black, and metal binders of various types. The problems of structure formation during vacuum sintering of multi-component powder materials obtained as a result of SHS are considered. The microstructure and dependences of the sintered composites densification on the sintering temperature and the composition of the SH-synthesized powder used are presented. It has been shown that under the conditions of the nonstoichiometric synthesized titanium carbide during subsequently vacuum sintering an additional alloy formation occurs that can lead to a consolidation (shrinkage) or volumetric growth of sintered TiC-Me composite depending on the type of metal matrix used.

Volume changes during solid-phase sintering and the structure and phase composition of materials sintered of the binary and ternary powder foundry alloys of the Al-Cr(Si,Ti) system are investigated. The powders for sintering were obtained by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in the mixtures of elementary powders of four target compositions with the subsequent crashing of the cakes and sieving of fine fractions. When sintering all the pressings under study, volume shrinkage, which monotonically increased with an temperature rise and the duration of the isothermal holding, take place. The results of structural investigations of the sintered materials, which were performed applying the methods of X-ray structural analysis, electron probe microanalysis, optical and scanning microscopy, are discussed jointly with the results of investigations of the volume variations during sintering.

Manufacturing waste can be not only recycled but also utilized as a source of chemical elements and as a component of powder materials. Steel swarf are a complex multicomponent material with a high iron content, while impurities such as carbon can affect the diffusion interaction in the chip and metal powder mixture. In this study, we investigate the diffusion interaction between aluminum and steel swarf using temperature-controlled vacuum sintering. We analyzed the resulting mixture’s microstructure and phase composition, and observed that sintering creates a multiphase structure in which FeAl iron aluminide occupies at least 30 vol. %. Despite the high sintering temperature, we also observed residual aluminum and iron. Incomplete transformation may result form refractory products that inhibit diffusion or impurities that influence the magnitude and direction of the diffusion fluxes. To confirm the impurities’ role in the diffusion interaction kinetics, we developed simulation models of the intermetallic phase growth for a flat and spherical particle embedded in aluminum. The model consider cross-diffusion fluxes in the emerging phase regions and possible effects of impurities on the concentration limit for the new phase’s existence. We derived approximate analytical solutions to analyze the emerging phase growth trends under various model parameters.

Al-Cr and Al-Cr-Si composite cathodes were obtained by the hot compaction of aluminum, chromium, and silicon powder mixtures. The phase transformations in the surface layer of the Al-Cr-Si composite cathodes subjected to the arc heating were considered. The elemental and phase compositions of the modified cathodes’ surfaces were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The effect of the silicon addition on the structural evolution in the cathode surface during arc evaporation is shown. It was found that an arc impact on the cathode surface resulted in the melting and consequent crystallization of the multiphase mixture of intermetallic compounds and eutectic in the cathode surface layer. Cathode surface layers were found to be depleted of aluminum and silicon due to the ejection of these elements in drop form from the Al-Si liquid layer on the cathode surface. This can result in the change in the elements ratio in the deposited coating as compared with that in the cathode and thus influence the coated tools’ durability.
