In this paper, we propose an improved energy optimization clustering algorithm (EOCA) for the multi-hop underwater acoustic cooperative sensor networks (UWA-CSN) due to the limited energy supply of the underwater sensor nodes. The proposed EOCA scheme considers multiple factors, such as the number of neighbor nodes, the residual energy of each node, the motion of the sensor nodes caused by the ocean currents, and the distance between the sink node and each underwater sensor node. All these factors are considered within the framework of the multi-hop cooperative communication. Moreover, in the proposed energy optimization scheme, we define a residual energy based maximum effective communication range (reE-MECR) according to the residual energy of each underwater sensor node, which can adaptively control the energy consumption of data transmission for each hop. Compared with the existing clustering scheme, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed EOCA scheme can not only prolong the life time of the multi-hop UWA-CSN, but also keep a good communication and networking performance, including the package delivery ratio, the energy consumption efficiency, and the network coverage area. The proposed scheme can obtain both the clustering benefit and the cooperative communication benefit for the multi-hop UWA-SN in terms of energy saving in underwater environments.

Multipath due to reflections of the sea surface, seabed, and obstacles, as well as inhomogeneity within the ocean, is an important characteristic of underwater acoustic channels. Mutual interference among multiple paths causes severe amplitude fading and frequency selective fading. The guard interval is an effective anti-multipath method, but an excessively long guard interval will reduce the data rate of multi-carrier underwater acoustic communication. In this paper, we propose a new antimultipath multi-carrier communication method based on orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) that uses chirp signals for carrier modulation. As OCDM exploits the multipath components for diversity gain, the system robustness is improved. The new method also adds a data pick-based rake receiver for maintaining good communication performance, even at short guard intervals. We detail the implementation and parameter selection of the anti-multipath OCDM system and compare its performance with the traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme using simulations; under a severe multipath simulation condition (the delay spread is longer than the guard interval), the anti-multipath OCDM achieves a bit error rate (BER) of 10-6, while the OFDM has a BER floor of 10-3. The simulation results verify the feasibility of the proposed method and the superiority of its anti-multipath performance.

The filtering parameters of non-local means (NLM) that seriously affect the denoising results are usually optimized based on the noise level estimation. But the noise level is unknown in many cases. In this paper, a simple method for optimizing NLM parameters based on autocorrelation function (ACF) is proposed from the perspective of signal estimation, which uses the periodic lag of the autocorrelation function to estimate the vibration signal. This method is verified with a hypothetical clean image corrupted by additive noise, and the NLM parameter optimization results are compared with those obtained by two traditional methods based on peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM) respectively. Then it is tested with the practical vibration signal of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer ( $\varphi$ -OTDR). The fidelity and spatial resolution of the denoised practical signal are analyzed. This work helps to improve the performance of $\varphi$ -OTDR and signal recognition.

The issue of limited energy resources is crucial for underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) because these networks operate in remote and harsh environments where access to power sources is limited. Overcoming the energy constraints is necessary to ensure the long-term functionality and sustainability of UWSN, enabling continuous data collection and communication for various applications such as environmental monitoring and surveillance. To solve the problems of limited energy and the difficulty of battery replacement in UWSN, a path planning and energy-saving scheme for charging underwater sensor nodes using AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) is proposed. Applying multiple AUVs to charge the sensing network nodes will maximize the size of the underwater sensing network as well as meet the transmission reliability, and the optimal path of AUVs is solved by using a genetic algorithm. Simulation results show that the AUV path planning scheme convergence is faster than that of conventional algorithms, and the lifetime of UWSN is prolonged while energy balancing according to the network size and node density. In high-density networks, the average energy consumption generated by AUVs for exploration is reduced by 15 percent for each additional AUV with our path planning.

The choice of wavelet decomposition layer (DL) not only affects the denoising quality of wavelet denoising (WD), but also limits the denoising efficiency, especially when dealing with real phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) signals with complex signal characteristics and different noise distributions. In this paper, a straightforward adaptive DL selection method is introduced, which dose not require known noise and clean signals, but relies on the similarity between the probability density function (PDF) of method noise (MN) and the PDF of Gaussian white noise. Validation is carried out using hypothetical noise signals and measured φ-OTDR vibration signals by comparison with conventional metrics, such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM). The proposed wavelet DL selection method contributes to the fast processing of distributed fiber optic sensing signals and further improves the system performance.

Mobile underwater acoustic communication technology has been widely employed in marine measurement and offshore engineering. The irregular relative motion between the transmitter and receiver causes time-varying Doppler shifts, which can cause severe inter-carrier interference (ICI) and thus affect the performance of orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) communication. Conventional techniques such as resampling and residual carrier frequency offset can only handle constant Doppler frequency shift. In this paper, we propose a new method for handling time-varying Doppler shifts by adding multiplex resampling to OCDM communications. This method extends the resampling range based on the measured Doppler standard deviation and thus reduces the bit error rate (BER) in mobile underwater acoustic communications. The application of the variable number of branches in multiplex resampling reduces the computational complexity and saves the computational cost by approximately 30% compared with the fixed number of branches. We detail the implementation and parameter selection of the Doppler-resistant OCDM in mobile underwater acoustic communication, and compare the performance of multiplex resampling and single resampling by simulation and actual measurement in Qiandao Lake. The BER and frame error ratio (FER) results verify the feasibility of the proposed method and the superiority of its anti-time-varying Doppler shifts performance.
