In this paper, we propose an imagined speech-based brain wave pattern recognition using deep learning. Multiple features were extracted concurrently from eight-channel electroencephalography (EEG) signals. To obtain classifiable EEG data with fewer sensors, we placed the EEG sensors on carefully selected spots on the scalp. To decrease the dimensions and complexity of the EEG dataset and to avoid overfitting during the deep learning algorithm, we utilized the wavelet scattering transformation. A low-cost 8-channel EEG headset was used with MATLAB 2023a to acquire the EEG data. The long-short term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN) was used to decode the identified EEG signals into four audio commands: up, down, left, and right. Wavelet scattering transformation was applied to extract the most stable features by passing the EEG dataset through a series of filtration processes. Filtration was implemented for each individual command in the EEG datasets. The proposed imagined speech-based brain wave pattern recognition approach achieved a 92.50% overall classification accuracy. This accuracy is promising for designing a trustworthy imagined speech-based brain–computer interface (BCI) future real-time systems. For better evaluation of the classification performance, other metrics were considered, and we obtained 92.74%, 92.50%, and 92.62% for precision, recall, and F1-score, respectively.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) proliferate quickly and play a significant part in crucial tasks, so it is important to protect the security and integrity of UAV communication channels. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) are required to protect the UAV communication infrastructure from unauthorized access and harmful actions. In this paper, we examine a new approach for enhancing intrusion detection in UAV communication channels by utilizing the Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM) combined with the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) algorithm, and this integration is the binary classification method (LSTM-SMOTE). We successfully achieved 99.83% detection accuracy by using the proposed approach and the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity Intrusion Detection Evaluation Dataset 2017 (CICIDS2017) dataset. We demonstrated the efficiency of LSTM-SMOTE in defending UAV communication channels against possible attacks and bolstering the overall security posture through the use of a real-world scenario.

Autonomous agents can explore the environment around them when equipped with advanced hardware and software systems that help intelligent agents minimize collisions. These systems are developed under the term Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety. AI safety is essential to provide reliable service to consumers in various fields such as military, education, healthcare, and automotive. This paper presents the design of an AI safety algorithm for safe autonomous navigation using Reinforcement Learning (RL). Machine Learning Agents Toolkit (ML-Agents) was used to train the agent with a proximal policy optimizer algorithm with an intrinsic curiosity module (PPO + ICM). This training aims to improve AI safety and minimize or prevent any mistakes that can cause dangerous collisions by the intelligent agent. Four experiments have been executed to validate the results of our research. The designed algorithm was tested in a virtual environment with four different models. A comparison was presented in four cases to identify the best-performing model for improving AI safety. The designed algorithm enabled the intelligent agent to perform the required task safely using RL. A goal collision ratio of 64% was achieved, and the collision incidents were minimized from 134 to 52 in the virtual environment within 30 min.

Speech involves the synchronization of the brain and the oral articulators. Inner speech, also known as imagined speech or covert speech, refers to thinking in the form of sound without intentional movement of the lips, tongue, or hands. Decoding human thoughts is a powerful technique that can help individuals who have lost the ability to speak. This paper introduces a high-performance brain wave decoder based on inner speech, using a novel feature extraction method. The approach combined Support Vector Machine (SVM) and multi-wavelet feature extraction techniques to decode two EEG-based inner speech datasets (Data 1 and Data 2) into internally spoken words. The proposed approach achieved an overall classification accuracy of 68.20%, precision of 68.22%, recall of 68.20%, and F1-score of 68.21% for Data 1, and accuracy of 97.5%, precision of 97.73%, recall of 97.50%, and F1-score of 97.61% for Data 2. Additionally, the Area Under the Curve of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUC-ROC) demonstrated the validity of the proposed approach for classifying inner speech commands by achieving a macro-average of 78.76% and 99.32% for Data 1 and Data 2, respectively. The EEG-based inner speech classification method proposed in this research has the potential to improve communication for patients with speech disorders, mutism, cognitive development issues, executive function problems, and psychopathology.

Intrinsic motivation helps autonomous exploring agents traverse a larger portion of their environments. However, simulations of different learning environments in previous research show that after millions of timesteps of successful training, an intrinsically motivated agent may learn to act in ways unintended by the designer. This potential for unintended actions of autonomous exploring agents poses threats to the environment and humans if operated in the real world. We investigated this topic by using Unity’s Machine Learning Agent Toolkit (ML-Agents) implementation of the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm with the Intrinsic Curiosity Module (ICM) to train autonomous exploring agents in three learning environments. We demonstrate that ICM, although designed to assist agent navigation in environments with sparse reward generation, increasing gradually as a tool for purposely training misbehaving agent in significantly less than 1 million timesteps. We present the following achievements: 1) experiments designed to cause agents to act undesirably, 2) a metric for gauging how well an agent achieves its goal without collisions, and 3) validation of PPO best practices. Then, we used optimized methods to improve the agent’s performance and reduce collisions within the same environments. These achievements help further our understanding of the significance of monitoring training statistics during reinforcement learning for determining how humans can intervene to improve agent safety and performance.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems can assist physically challenged people to interact with their surroundings and improve the quality of their lives. Decoding human thoughts is a powerful technique that can assist paralyzed people who have lost their speech production ability. Speaking is a combined process involving synchronizing the brain and the oral articulators. This paper proposed a high-accuracy brain wave pattern recognition based on inner speech using a novel feature extraction method. Only eight EEG electrodes were used in this study, and they were set on selected spots on the scalp. Support Vector Machine (SVM) was employed to decode the recorded EEG dataset into four internally spoken words which are: Up, Down, Left, and Right. The proposed approach achieved overall classification accuracy that ranges between 96.20% to 97.5%. In addition, more performance evaluation metrics were estimated to test the reliability of classifying the EEG-based inner speech data, and we obtained 97.61%, 97.50%, and 97.73% for F1-score, recall, and precision respectively. Furthermore, the Area Under Curve of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUC-ROC) proved the strength of the proposed approach for classifying the specified inner speech commands by achieving a macro-average amount of 99.32%. The inner speech classification method using electroencephalography proposed in this work can clinically help improve communication for patients with problems including speech disorder, mutism, cognitive development, executive function, and psychopathology.
