For special types of electric machines, it is essential and of utmost interest to develop mathematical model and characterize the machine for performance evaluation and testing the machine for study and applications. A two-dimensional analytical method for the performance evaluation of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine has been presented in this paper. The method computes the electromagnetic torque, magnetic field distribution, cogging torque and back EMF of the machine using quasi-3D modeling. Fourier Transform is used for the solution of Maxwell's equations in different regions of the AFPM machine. A surface mounted AFPM motor is designed and developed in workshop and tested. Experimental results are demonstrated and compared with the results computed from analytical model to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

This paper focus on the simulation and hardware analysis of a diode clamped multilevel inverter (DCMLI) fed direct torque control (DTC) permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive in electric vehicle (EV) application. DTC-PMSM drive is more used for torque and speed control. The existing DTC PMSM drive consists of torque and flux hysteresis comparators and suffers from variable switching frequency and torque ripples. These problems can be solved by using carrier-based space vector modulation (CBSVM) about torque and flux. In this proposed approach a DCMLI fed 4 poles, 0.5 HP DTC PMSM drive system is designed and simulated using carrier-based CBSVM. Simulation and experimental implementation are carried out in MATLAB environment and AVR Microcontroller respectively. The simulated performances are studied in steady-state and transient conditions for varying load, speed, and torque. The results of the DTC-PMSM drive system using CBSVM show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the torque ripple and maintain a constant speed and also improved driving performance of drive for electric vehicle applications.

The effectiveness of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive managed by an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) microcontroller using field oriented control (FOC) with space vector modulation (SVM) and a diode clamped multilevel inverter (DCMLI) is investigated. Due to its efficacy, FOC would be widely implemented for PMSM speed regulation. The primary drawbacks of a 3-phase classic bridge inverter appear to be reduced dv/dt stresses, lesser electromagnetic interference, and a relatively small rating, especially when compared to inverters. PMSMs have a better chance of being adopted in the automotive industry because of their compact size, high efficiency, and durability. The SVM idea states that an inverter's three driving signals are created simultaneously. Using MATLAB simulations, researchers looked into incorporating a DCMLI with a resistive load on an AVR microcontroller. Torque, current, and harmonic analysis were evaluated between the SVM and the inverter-driven PMSM drive in this research. In comparison to the prior art, the proposed PMSM drive has better speed and torque management, less output distortion, and less harmonic distortion.

This paper presents an analysis and hardware implementation of a Sensorless Field oriented control method for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor drive using 3-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Low-Voltage Motor Control Drive. The Sensorless Field oriented control Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor drive system is designed, simulated and implemented using the standard setup by free scale. The experimental setup is designed and implemented based on a six-pole, 2 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor. The 3-ph permanent magnet synchronous motor LV (low voltage) motor control drive board consists of all the required circuitry needed for development of motor control applications. It incorporates a complete 3-phase power stage, a communication interface, feedback signal handling and the user's interface. Power circuit consists of metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor based voltage source inverter and gate driver circuit. The control hardware consists of power supplies, resolver demodulation circuit, current sensors and interfacing circuits. The reference speed, rotor speed estimation using sensed position signals, speed controller, reference frame transformation, vector controller and PWM current controller for gating pulse generation of voltage source inverter are implemented using the standard GUI interface of the software where high level language coding is used. The simulated performances along with test results of the permanent magnet synchronous motor drive are studied for starting, steady-state condition, speed reversal and load perturbation. Experimental results show that the drive system has a good dynamic response particularly in terms of torque ripple and speed response.
