In this paper, we present the final results from the research project “Urban Abacus of Building Energy Performances (Abaco Urbano Energeticodegli Edifci–AUREE)” aimed at supporting the renovation process and energy efficiency enhancement of urban building stocks. The crux of the AUREE project is a Web–GIS GeoBlog portal with customized semantic dashboards aimed at sharing information on an urban built environment and promoting the participation of local stakeholders in its improvement. As the latest development of this research, a workflow that integrates the AUREE portal with BIM authoring and an open-source IoT platform is implemented and applied to an experimental case study concerning a public building in Carbonia (Italy). The headquarters of the Sotacarbo Sustainable Energy Research Center was selected as the case study. The presented results proved that it was possible to create a valid open system, which was accessible to both specialist and unskilled users, and aimed at guiding, through a progressive knowledge deepening, common end-users toward proper conscious “energy behaviors” as well as public administrations and decision-makers toward sustainable facility management. Later, the proposed open system could also be suitable to be used as an effective tool to support the rising “energy communities”.
The integration of digital technologies with Artificial Intelligence could serve as a strategic approach to achieving the goals set by the European Union, mainly concerning sustainability, carbon emission reduction, and digitalization in the construction sector. In this regard, this paper aims to examine the major trends in the application of AI integrated with digital technologies to boost the environmental sustainability of the built environment throughout its life cycle. A systematic literature review was conducted, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, inspecting the Scopus database from 2015 to 2025. After having applied specific exclusion and inclusion criteria, 102 studies have been examined to identify key trends and transformative innovations enhancing sustainable approaches for the built environment. The results have been systematized based on the phases of the building life cycle which are impacted most by AI-powered digital technologies, and on sustainability areas that are attracting the greatest attention. The main research gaps are identified in the limited exploration of renovation and end-of-life phases of the life cycle, in the lack of technologies interoperability, in data complexity and quality issues, in a lack of cost-effective solutions, and in limited regulation and standardization.
Currently, the management of public real estate stocks is one of the most challenging activities. In this case, facility management emerges as a strategic but complex discipline that requires a great amount of integrated and structured data and information of heterogeneous origin and nature. Starting from this premise, this paper focuses on how FM discipline can be supported by Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information System (GIS) integrated methodologies and tools achieving high levels of effectiveness and efficiency in public building stock management. This led to the definition and development of a framework that mainly takes advantage of open-source tools (e.g., Quantum Geographic Information System—QGIS, and Dynamo) and non-proprietary data exchange formats like the COBie (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange) international standard. This methodological framework is capable of integrating different but strongly complementary tools, data, information, and expert knowledge for a multiscale approach. The methodology presented in this paper does not provide for an integral transfer of BIM data to the GIS platform but leads instead to an effective bidirectional integration between the two informative systems, by properly relating them and allowing for an easy switch from one system database to the other. The findings of experimental applications of the methodological approach to the former Macciotta pediatric hospital, a healthcare building owned by the University of Cagliari, are presented and discussed. Finally, the analysis about potentials and criticalities of the developed methodological framework aims to trigger the widest future development and dissemination of this research.
The paper presents the final results from the research project “Urban Abacus of Building Energy performances (Abaco Urbano Energeticodegli Edifci – AUREE)” aimed at supporting the renovation and energy efficiency enhancement of urban building heritage financed by the “Ricerca Sistema Elettrico (MISE) program”. The crux of AUREE project is a Web – GIS GeoBlog portal with customized semantic dashboards aimed at sharing information on urban built environment and promoting the participation of local stakeholders to its improvement. As the latest development of this research, a workflow integrating the AUREE portal with BIM authoring and an open source IoT platform has been implemented and applied to an experimental case study concerning a public building in Carbonia (Italy). The headquarters of the sustainable energy research center Sotacarbo was selected as case study. The presented results proved that it was possible to create an open system, which could be easily consulted by "non-expert" users as well, to make available real-time monitoring data obtained from IoT sensors measuring the energy consumption, the indoor environmental conditions and the usage profiles of public buildings. The proposed open system could also be suitable to be later used as an effective tool to support the rising “energy communities”.
Several studies have proven the impact of the quality of indoor environmental conditions on human professional and cognitive performances. Additionally, building energy efficiency and indoor comfort have attracted increasing interest, encouraging the implementation of advanced digital technologies and platforms for a more efficient management of buildings. In this context, this study proposes a new framework for an effective BIM-IoT integration leading to a nearly Digital Twin (DT) relying on a BIM model equipped with regularly-generated IEQ reports summarizing statistics from real-time collected data to support facility managers’ decision-making. Despite the relevant literature on the subject, the proposed methodology introduces some novelties, as monthly results of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort evaluation are provided by open HTML reports automatically generated through a Python 3.10 code from sensor data. These reports are easily readable without needing any external platform to be visualized and are directly accessible through BIM models. The proposed methodology has been validated on a pilot case study, thus proving its efficiency, effectiveness, and robustness in terms of automation level, interoperability, adaptability, reliability, accuracy in data visualization, and management. The study shows promising results but also some issues that could be addressed through further development of the research.
