Salt and nutrient transport and transformations during water infiltration directly influence saline soil improvement and the efficient use of water and fertilizer resources. The effects of soil initial salinity (18.3 g/kg, 25.5 g/kg, 42.2 g/kg, 79.94 g/kg, and 165 g/kg, respectively, labeled S1 to S5) on the infiltration and leaching characteristics of water, salt, and nitrogen were analyzed via a one-dimensional vertical fertilizer infiltration experiment. Meanwhile, the estimation models of cumulative infiltration and wetting front, including the effect of soil initial salinity, were established. The results showed that, with the increase in soil initial salinity, the cumulative infiltration within the same time decreased, and the migration time of wet front to 45 cm was longer. The time required for S5 to reach the preset cumulative infiltration was more than six times that of S1, and, for the wet front migration to 45 cm, the time requirement for S5 was about four times that of S1. In the established Kostiakov model and wetting front model, the coefficients all decreased with the increase in soil initial salinity, and the test index R2 values both reached 0.999. In the Kostiakov model, coefficient K had a linear relationship with the natural logarithm of initial soil salt content, while index a had a direct linear relationship with initial soil salt content. The cumulative leachate volume decreased with the increase in soil initial salinity, and the corresponding data of S3 and S5 were reduced by 37% and 57.3%, respectively, compared with S1. The electrical conductivity values of S1, S3, and S5 were 15.4, 209.8, and 205.6 ms/cm, respectively, being affected by the initial content in soil, soil moisture transport rate, and exogenous potassium nitrate (KNO3) addition. The NO3−-N concentrations in the leachates of S1, S3, and S5 at the end of leaching were 55.26, 16.17, and 3.2 mg/L, respectively. Based on the results of this study, for soil with high initial salinity, the conventional irrigation amount (2250 m3/ha) of the general soil in the study area could not meet the requirements of leaching salt. These results can provide a reference for the formulation of irrigation and fertilization strategies for soils with different salinity and contribute to the sustainable development of saline soil agriculture and the ecological environment.

A synchronous optimization method for self-pressure drip irrigation pipe network system is proposed. We have generalized the optimization design problem of the system and have established the mathematical models for the simultaneous optimization design of pipeline layout and pipe diameters. A genetic algorithm based on the infeasibility degree of the solution was used to solve the model. A typical example is used to validate the presented method. The method exhibits effective performance in the case studied. Designers can use the results of this study to efficiently design self-pressurized drip irrigation network systems.

Infiltration parameters and Manning’s roughness are essential input parameters for surface irrigation simulation models. Multiple points of infiltration experiments require time-consuming, costly data collection and problematic calculations of field mean infiltration parameters. This study estimated the field mean infiltration parameters and Manning’s roughness values on a regional scale, on the basis of closed-end furrow irrigation experiments conducted at 45 experimental sites on the Guanzhong plain, and evaluated the influence of Manning’s roughness on advance trajectory and performance indicators of closed-end furrow irrigation. Then, we present a functional normalization of the Kostiakov equation and pedotransfer function (PTF) to estimate the normalization factors. The proposed method can be used to estimate the field mean infiltration parameters using PTF and the represented Manning’s roughness to determine the optimal discharge of closed-end furrow irrigation. The results revealed that the advance trajectory and performance of closed-end furrow irrigation was not sensitive to variations of Manning’s roughness, which can be adopted as a representative value (i.e., 0.075) of the maize field. The normalization method was proven to be feasible for the Kostiakov equation, and the PTF reliably estimated the normalization factors. Last, the optimized values of the inflow discharge were determined using the proposed method, with various combinations of furrow lengths and bottom slopes in the study area, and also compared with the inflow discharge determined based on infiltration parameters and Manning’s roughness, which were inversed by SIPAR_ID. The results indicated that the inflow discharge values obtained through using the two methods were approximately equal, proving that the proposed method was reliable and easy to use in practice.

Soil amendments such as humic acid (HA), a biochar-based microbial agent (M), and vermicompost (V) can improve soil quality and promote crop growth. However, it remains unclear whether the co-application of the three soil amendments (HMV) has a synergistic effect on alleviating soil quality deterioration obstacles caused by dry sowing and wet emergence technology in Xinjiang cotton fields. A three-year field experiment was conducted in saline–alkali soils using plastic-film-mulched drip irrigation in Xinjiang, China. Through the orthogonal experiment method, the application amounts of HA, M and V were 75 kg ha−1, 75 kg ha−1 and 225 kg ha−1 respectively in 2021. In 2022, three application amount gradients were used for HA, M and V: 60 kg ha−1, 90 kg ha−1 and 120 kg ha−1 respectively. In 2023, the application amounts of HA, M, and V were 60 kg ha−1, 120 kg ha−1, and 120 kg ha−1. It should be pointed out that V contains HA in the range of 20–35%. This study aimed to explore the improvement effect of a single or combined application of HA, M, and V on soil quality and cotton emergence rate using dry sowing and wet emergence technology in Xinjiang cotton fields. The results showed that the single and combined applications of HA, M, and V improved the soil quality and water–heat–salt environment of the cultivated layer. In the combined application, the cotton seedling emergence rate and yield increased by 1.9–22.8% and 7.0–54.1%. Therefore, it is recommended to jointly apply HA, M, and V to promote cotton seedling emergence and increase yield using dry sowing and wet emergence technology in Xinjiang cotton fields.
