The interrupted-sampling repeater jamming (ISRJ) is coherent and has the characteristic of suppression and deception to degrade the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image quality. The anti-ISRJ methods are studied in this work in order to suppress the ISRJ based on the waveform and filter design for SAR. First, the relationship between the ISRJ and waveform is obtained by analyzing the principle of the ISRJ using the ambiguity function. The ISRJ produces multiple false targets based on the high Doppler tolerance of waveform and the characteristic of the matched filter. Next, a method is proposed to counter the ISRJ by transmitting a phase-coded (PC) waveform with low Doppler tolerance and designing the corresponding mismatched filter. The joint design method is then developed to improve the anti-ISRJ and imaging performance. In the proposed methods, the majorization minimization framework is introduced to solve the nonconvex waveform and filter design problem. Finally, several simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Simulation results show that the joint design method shows better anti-ISRJ and imaging performance in comparison with the separate design method, but it is more sensitive to the ISRJ sampling duty ratio and period.

Class imbalance problem exists widely in vision data. In these imbalanced datasets, the majority classes dominate the loss and influence the gradient. Hence, these datasets have a significantly negative impact on the performance of many state of the art methods. In this paper, we propose a class imbalance loss (CI loss) to handle this problem. To distinguish imbalanced datasets in accordance with the extent of imbalance, we also define an imbalance degree that works as a decision index factor in the CI loss. Because the minority classes with fewer samples probably lose chances in descending gradient in the training process, CI loss is introduced to make these minority classes descend further than the majority classes. In view of the imbalanced distribution of data in few-shot learning, a method for generating an imbalanced few-shot learning dataset is presented in this paper. We conducted a large number of experiments in the MiniImageNet dataset, which showed the effectiveness of an algorithm for model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML) for rapid adaptation with CI loss. In the problem of detecting 15 ship categories, our loss function is transplanted to Rotational Region Convolutional Neural Network (R2CNN) detection method and Cascade network architecture and achieves higher mAP than focal loss and cross-entropy loss. In addition, Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology dataset and Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition dataset are sampled to imbalanced datasets to verify the effectiveness of CI loss.

Aircraft detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is one challenging task due to the discreteness of aircraft scattering, the diversity of aircraft size, and the interference of background. In order to deal with these problems, a novel method named scattering enhancement and feature fusion network (SEFFNet) is here proposed to detect aircraft via combining traditional image processing and deep learning together. At first, a scattering information extraction and enhancement module (SIEEM) is proposed to highlight the scattering points of aircraft targets. Then, to more effectively focus on the location of aircraft targets, a space-to-depth coordinate attention module (SDCAM) is further designed, following which an efficient multi-scale feature fusion pyramid (FFP) is also introduced to fuse the semantic information of different layers. At last, a contextual fusion head (CFH) is built to improve the receptive field for better detecting aircraft. The experiments carried out on the popular datasets SADD and SAR-AIRcraft-1.0 show that SEFFNet is more appropriate for aircraft detection, especially the small-size aircraft detection, in comparison with other state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Taking the dataset SADD for example, on average, the precision, recall, F1-score, and APs values are respectively 2.8%, 2.6%, 2.7%, and 2.0% higher than the baseline network YOLOv5.

Urban area extraction using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data has become a potential mean to urban studies because it holds the promise that the radar returns from specific scattering characteristics may be emphasized. Due to the high variability of urban land-scape and the existing misdetection of buildings as vegetation, urban area extraction is still a challenging problem. In this paper, an eigenvalue-based urban area extraction method is proposed. First, similar to the entropy/anisotropy plane, a two-dimensional RVI/PA plane is put forward to construct the extractor of buildings with small orientation angles. Second, coupled with the parameters, a robust extractor is introduced to elevate the scattering characteristics of buildings with large orientation angles but to suppress those of others. Finally, data-driven thresholds are investigated and ascertained for the extractors, thus urban areas are extracted. In addition, a change detection-based prescreening method is applied to refine the extraction result. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated and validated with spaceborne and airborne fully PolSAR data over different test sites. The outputs show that the proposed method provides an overall accuracy of over 90%, as well as better visual results of the extracted buildings.

The rapid development of artificial electromagnetic (EM) materials provides unprecedented freedom to manipulate EM waves. In recent years, reflective spectrum conversion technology based on EM materials has been widely studied due to its multiharmonic generation capability. The possibility of its application in wireless communication is explored. However, the research on spectrum conversion is mainly based on periodic modulation waveforms. The modulation effect of nonperiodic for EM materials has not been studied so far. In this article, a nonperiodic time-varying active frequency selective surface (AFSS) is proposed to manipulate the spectral distribution of harmonics. By dynamically controlling the amplitude of the reflected echo, a continuous Doppler spectrum is generated. On this basis, the imaging characteristics of nonperiodic time-varying AFSS are analyzed in detail, and the defocusing phenomenon of the target image is discovered. Finally, the radar imaging experiments for nonperiodic time-varying AFSS are conducted to verify the validity of the proposed method.

A joint waveform and filter design method is developed for suppressing radar pulse compression sidelobe level in this paper. The problem is formulated as the minimization of the integrated sidelobe level (ISL) under the constraint of waveform constant modular and filter energy. To control the loss-in-processing gain (LPG), an additional function is introduced to constrain the peak level based on penalty function method. The joint design algorithm is then derived based on the alternating minimization and majorization minimization (MM) schemes. The computation complexity is analyzed and the convergence analysis verifies that the algorithm can converge to a critical point. Specifically, the proposed method is extended to the waveform and filter design for suppressing the peak sidelobe level (PSL). Numerical simulations are carried out to analyze the key parameters, which demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. Simulation results show that the ISL and PSL can be significantly reduced with small LPG. Moreover, the proposed method exhibits faster running speed than the existing one and it thus can be applied to longer sequence designs.
