For further resource utilization of solid waste steel slag and the reduction in biodiesel production costs, this study used steel slag as a carrier to synthesize a CaO-CeO2/slag solid base catalyst for the effective transesterification of palm oil into fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). The synthesis involved a two-step impregnation of steel slag with nitrate of calcium and cerium and thermal activation at 800 °C for 180 min. Then, the catalysts’ textural, chemical, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption properties were characterized. The catalytic activity depended highly on the ratio of Ca-Ce to steel slag mass; the CaO-CeO2/slag-0.8 catalyst showed outstanding performance. Characterization showed that the surface area and total basicity of the Ca-Ce/slag-0.8 catalyst were 3.66 m2/g and 1.289 mmol/g, respectively. The reactivity results showed that FAMEs obtained using 7 wt.% catalyst, 9:1 of methanol-to-palm-oil molar ratio, 180 min reaction duration, and 70 °C reaction temperature was optimum (i.e., 95.3% yield). In addition, the CaO-CeO2/slag-0.8 catalyst could be reused for at least three cycles, retaining 91.2% of FAMEs yield after n-hexane washing. Hence, the catalyst exhibits an excellent potential for cost-effective and environmentally friendly biodiesel production.

Activated carbon (AC) materials, renowned for their high specific surface area, excellent conductivity, and customizable functional groups, are widely employed as catalyst carriers. However, enhancing the activity of Ru-based catalysts supported on AC (Ru/AC) for ammonia decomposition remains a challenge. In this study, commercial AC was utilized as a substrate, with glucose and urea employed as modifiers. Specifically, the surface of the AC was modified via a hydrothermal pyrolysis method, resulting in the successful post-treatment in situ co-doping of nitrogen (AC-GN). Experimental results revealed that Ru/AC-GN exhibited a hydrogen production rate 46% higher than that of Ru/AC at 475 °C, indicating improved activity and stability. The characterization of AC-GN demonstrated that nitrogen doping primarily occurred on the external surface and macropores of the AC, increasing the nitrogen content in the carrier, particularly pyrrolic nitrogen content, while preserving the original structural and morphological integrity of the AC. The enhanced dispersion of Ru, combined with the improved electronic transmission capabilities and strengthened interactions between the metal and the modified carrier, were identified as pivotal factors contributing to the enhanced low-temperature efficacy of Ru/AC-GN. This paper presents a novel direction for the large-scale preparation of efficient catalysts for ammonia decomposition.

Improving the efficiency of coal-fired boiler is beneficial for greenhouse gas control, mainly for carbon dioxide (CO2). The low-temperature corrosion covering heating surfaces is a frequent threat for coal-fired thermal equipment. The corrosion is induced by a fouling layer, where the ash deposition and condensed acid in coal-fired flue gas react mutually. The corrosion experiments were designed to investigate the reactions of representative acid solution between basic oxides, non-basic oxides, and fly ash particles covering metal surfaces. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze the reaction particles and metal samples collected from experiments. The corrosion rates of 316L steel, 20# steel, Corten steel and ND (09CrCuSb) steel by the sulfuric solution of different concentrations with and without particles were obtained. The results showed that corrosion rate could be reduced by reacted particles, followed as: basic oxides particles > fly ash particles > non-basic oxides particles. Meanwhile, the deposited ash particles with smaller sizes contribute to a deeper acid–ash reactions due to more alkaline oxides accumulated. Thus, the metal surfaces will be covered by denser attachments, playing a function of corrosion resistance. The effect of fouling layer on low-temperature corrosion was obtained, guiding a safe and efficient operation of heat equipment in coal-fired flue gas.

The medium metamorphic degree of bituminous coal with high oxygen content and low ash content is selected as the carbon carrier to prepare an efficient carbon-based solid acid catalyst through partial carbonization and sulfonation approach, and then is employed to catalyze transesterification of palm oil with methanol for biodiesel production. The strength of catalyst is characterized by Hammett inductor method. The reaction parameters are optimized by single factor method. Results demonstrate that the prepared catalyst possesses the Hammett acid strength range of 0.8<H0<3.3. The maximum biodiesel yield of 97.8% is obtained at catalyst dosage of 6 wt.%, transesterification temperature of 160 °C, molar ratio of methanol to palm oil of 18 and stirring rate of 1000 rpm for 8 h. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits satisfactory activity in catalyzing simultaneous esterification and transesterification when 20 wt.% oleic acid is added to palm oil.
