With the rapid advancement of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has gained widespread applications across various fields, including civil engineering. This paper provides a comprehensive review of AI’s significant roles in design optimization, construction management, structural health monitoring (SHM), and smart city management. AI enhances the scientific and creative dimensions of civil engineering by optimizing design schemes, generating innovative solutions, and improving efficiency. In construction management, AI streamlines processes by enabling better schedule control, cost and quality management, and safety monitoring. In SHM, AI facilitates more accurate fault detection, health assessment, and lifespan prediction, improving the safety, durability, and resilience of infrastructure. AI’s role in smart cities and infrastructure management further supports the efficient governance of urban planning, traffic control, and maintenance operations. However, challenges remain, including integrating AI with legacy infrastructure, ensuring data privacy and security, and overcoming scalability issues in real-world applications. The combination of AI with blockchain technology addresses transparency and security concerns, as demonstrated by emerging pilot projects. Additionally, integrating deep learning with big data will further enhance decision-making capabilities. As interdisciplinary research deepens and intelligent construction technologies become more prevalent, AI-powered civil engineering will advance toward more sustainable, efficient, and innovative practices, ultimately reshaping the field and meeting the demands of future urban development.

Friction pendulum bearings (FPBs) have emerged as critical structural isolation devices in the field of earthquake engineering. Extensive research and development efforts have led to the exploration and refinement of these bearings, resulting in the creation of various models with unique structural configurations and superior mechanical properties. This paper offers an in-depth review of the friction materials employed in FPBs, alongside an analysis of the mechanical performance and advancements in research regarding single-pendulum, double-pendulum, multiple-pendulum, and other types of friction bearings. Characterized by their low sensitivity and high stability, these bearings are adept at resisting seismic forces, thus providing dependable isolation protection for structures. This review also includes a succinct examination of the seismic performance and engineering applications of these isolation structures. With robust self-centering capabilities, excellent isolation, and energy dissipation mechanisms, FPBs are capable of quickly resuming normal operations post-seismic events. This reduces structural damage and maintenance expenses, significantly improving the seismic resilience of structures. Moreover, the paper outlines the current challenges in the research and development of FPBs and suggests future research directions, including optimizing friction materials, enhancing the design and performance of isolation structures, and improving the seismic performance and engineering application efficiency of FPBs. By identifying underexplored areas and synthesizing findings differently, this review provides a comprehensive and novel perspective that advances the field of earthquake engineering.

The seismic performance and damage pattern of the split-foundation frame buildings in across-slope direction are studied. In view of the characteristics of split-foundation structure, the parameter analyses of split-foundation structure with different spans and floors of lower and upper parts are studied, and the main factors affecting the torsional effect of split-foundation structure are also studied theoretically. Finally, the improvements and design procedure of split-foundation structure are put forward to reduce the difference in ductility demands between the upper ground columns and the lower part. Results show that the torsional effect of split-foundation structure is very significant because of the rigidity eccentric. The upper ground columns are the weakest parts of split-foundation structure which are destroyed first under the earthquake action; then, the lower floors are destroyed in succession. Lower ductility demands of the upper ground columns and better seismic performance of the split-foundation structure can be achieved by the designed improvements.
