With the development of industrial activities and the agricultural and mining industries, farmland soils are facing serious problems related to heavy metal contamination, especially cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) contamination. In this study, two industrial by-products, phosphogypsum (PG) and red mud (RM), were modified by lanthanum (La) impregnation to form a new composite (L-PR) to investigate the adsorption performance of Cd(II)/As(V) in both single and binary systems. The adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II)/As(V) on L-PR were analyzed using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS. The passivation effect of L-PR on the Cd-As composite contaminated soil was confirmed through a soil cultivation experiment. The adsorption experiments revealed that L-PR showed superior adsorption capabilities for Cd(II) and As(V) compared to PG and RM. Additionally, L-PR was found to be less affected by changes in pH. The kinetic studies indicated that Cd(II) and As(V) adsorption by L-PR followed the second-order kinetic model most accurately. Isothermal adsorption experiments revealed that the adsorption of Cd(II) by L-PR was more in accordance with the Freundlich model, while As(V) was more in accordance with the Langmuir model. The mechanisms of Cd(II) and As(V) adsorption on L-PR involved electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, complexation, and precipitation. The adsorption of Cd(II) is dominated by complexation and precipitation, and the adsorption of As(V) is dominated by ion exchange and complexation. Soil cultivation experiments showed that L-PR significantly reduced the available Cd and As concentrations in soil by 86.01% and 27.80%, respectively, and it could induce the transformation of non-stable Cd(II)/As(V) to the more stable residual. In summary, L-PR exhibits facile preparation, excellent adsorption performance, and is capable of simultaneously removing Cd(II) and As(V) from aqueous solutions while immobilizing these contaminants in soil. These remarkable attributes made it a highly promising alternative for the simultaneous treatment of various toxic metal contaminants.

Addressing the limitations of single-technology approaches to mitigate cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) co-contamination in rice, this study elucidates the synergistic mechanism between iron-based soil immobilization and foliar zinc (Zn) barrier control. A pot experiment with four treatments was conducted: CK (control), FBA (foliar Zn fertilizer), IBS (iron-based sulfur-rich material), and ISF (IBS combined with Zn). The ISF treatment showed particularly remarkable efficacy. Compared to the CK, it increased rice biomass by 49.6%, reduced Cd and Pb concentrations in grains by 53.8 and 54.2%, respectively (to 0.2 mg/kg), and enhanced Zn accumulation by 311.8%. This treatment raised soil pH by 1.4 units, decreased bioavailable Cd and Pb by 31.2 and 18.5%, and promoted the transfomation of Cd into the Fe-Mn oxide-bound fraction (FMO, + 389.1%) and the residual fraction (RES, + 5.3%), while simultaneously increasing the FMO-bound proportion of Pb by 29.6%. Furthermore, ISF significantly enhanced soil enzyme activities (e.g., urease), increased total microbial OTUs with 187 unique OTUs, enriched Nitrospirotaphyla , Desulfobacterota , and Geobacterales , strengthened nitrogen/sulfur/iron cycling functions, and improved microbial network robustness. This research provides a theoretical foundation for heavy metal mitigation and nutritional fortification in rice production systems.

Drinking water represents a major pathway for human exposure to heavy metals, which are associated with long-term and cumulative health risks. This study investigated eight heavy metals (Ba, V, Cr(VI), Mn, Mo, Ni, Cu, Fe) in three centralized drinking water sources in southwest Guizhou from January 2021 to December 2023. Overall, the measured heavy metal concentrations complied with relevant national standards; however, transient exceedances of the Class I surface water standard were observed for Cu and Cr(VI) in certain months, with the most pronounced deviations occurring in 2022. Significant temporal variations were observed for Mn, Ni, Cu, and Fe, likely influenced by anthropogenic activities such as sewage discharge and agriculture, while Cr(VI), Mo, Ba, and V showed notable spatial differences linked to the region’s geological features. Health risk assessments showed that the non-carcinogenic risks for both adults and children remained below the maximum acceptable level of 5.0 × 10−5 a−1, with Cu, Mo, Ba, and V contributing most to the risks. In contrast, the carcinogenic risk associated with Cr(VI) exceeded the ICRP-recommended benchmark of 1.0 × 10−6 a−1, with estimated risks for children approximately 1.6 times higher than those for adults. In 2022, the carcinogenic risk was highest across all sources. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) based forecasts suggest that Cr(VI)-related carcinogenic risk is likely to remain above acceptable levels in the near future, with an increasing trend projected for Mulanghe Reservoir, a declining trend for Xingxihu Reservoir, and relatively stable conditions for Weishanhu Reservoir. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions, particularly in controlling Cr(VI) concentrations and protecting vulnerable populations.
