In this paper, we discuss the evolution of the optical beam in nonlocal cubic nonlinear media, modeled by the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NNLSE). A different approximate model to the NNLSE is presented for the strongly nonlocal media with arbitrary response functions. An exact analytical solution of the model is obtained, and a spatial soliton is found to exist. A different phenomenon is revealed that the phase shift of such a nonlocal optical spatial soliton can be very large comparable to its local counterpart. The stability of the solution is rigorously proved. The comparisons of our analytical solution with the numerical simulation of the NNLSE, as well as with Snyder-Mitchell (linear) model [A. W. Snyder and D. J. Mitchell, Science 276, 1538 (1997)] are given.

We experimentally demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system based on a single commercially available RGB-type LED. High spectrally efficient carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) are adopted in the intensity-modulation and direct-detection VLC system of limited bandwidth. In order to achieve higher capacity of the uneven-frequency-response LED-based VLC system, OFDM signals are combined with the bit- and power-loading techniques, and CAP signals of various modulation are pre-emphasized to modulate one of the RGB chips. To reach the BER of less than 10-3, CAP and OFDM signals demonstrate the maximum data rates of 1.32 and 1.08 Gb/s, respectively, employing the blue chip. In addition to spectrally efficient formats, the wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) scheme is applied to further increase the capacity. After individually optimizing RGB chips, the maximum aggregate data rates of CAP and OFDM are 3.22 and 2.93 Gb/s, respectively, in our RGB-LED-based WDM VLC system. Hence, compared with OFDM, the CAP scheme shows competitive performance and provides an alternative spectrally efficient modulation for next generation optical wireless networks.

In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a radio frequency (RF)-tone-assisted optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. By inserting an RF tone at the edge of the signal band and biasing the Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) at the null point, the proposed system has a better sensitivity and chromatic dispersion (CD) tolerance compared to the previous intensity-modulated single-sideband OFDM (SSB-OFDM). We show analytically that the majority of the linear channel impairments, such as the transmitter, CD, optical filtering, and receiver, can be compensated for by a simple zero-forcing equalizer. Besides, the optimum value of the important parameter, carrier-to-signal-power ratio (CSPR), is analytically obtained and supported via the experimental results. We also observe that the relatively worse sensitivity of the previous SSB-OFDM can be attributed to the limited CSPR. We experimentally demonstrate a 10-Gb/s, 8 quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) RF-tone-assisted OFDM transmission, and show that our system has a ~ 5-dB better sensitivity compared to the previous intensity-modulated SSB-OFDM and exhibits a negligible transmission penalty after 260-km uncompensated standard single-mode fiber (SSMF).

Hybrid optical access networks, integrating fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems that share a single distributed infrastructure, are promising for future multiservice access networks. The primary concern is to enable RoF and FTTH systems to transmit both radio-frequency (RF) and baseband (BB) signals on a single wavelength over a single fiber. This study experimentally demonstrates simultaneous generation and transmission of a wired-line BB signal and a wireless RF signal on a single wavelength, using one external modulator. The hybrid signals transmitted over standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) do not suffer from periodic performance fading due to fiber dispersion. Following transmission over 50-km SSMF, the power penalties of both RF and BB signals are less than 0.2 dB

This letter demonstrates a novel method to generate high-purity optical millimeter-wave signals with carrier suppression by using a frequency quadrupling technique. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that a frequency quadrupling system requires only a single integrated Mach-Zehnder modulator without a narrowband optical filter to remove undesired optical sidebands. Since no optical filter is needed, fast frequency tuning is straightforward and this approach will be particularly attractive for optical up-conversion in wavelength-division-multiplexing radio-over-fiber systems. This letter provides both theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration. The generated optical millimeter-wave signals have very high quality with an optical carrier and harmonic distortion suppression ratio of more than 38 and 36 dB at 40 and 72 GHz, respectively.

We analytically and experimentally demonstrate a linearly field-modulated, direct-detected virtual single-sideband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (VSSB-OFDM) system that employs a tunable frequency gap and an iterative detection technique. The VSSB-OFDM that uses no frequency gap, which is referred to as the gapless VSSB-OFDM, is proposed as a spectrally efficient format. Compared with the intensity-modulated SSB-OFDM, the gapless VSSB-OFDM saves half the electrical bandwidth (BW), and exhibits better receiving sensitivity and more robust tolerance against fiber chromatic dispersion (CD). Furthermore, by incorporating a tunable frequency gap between the optical carrier and the OFDM data sideband, the calculating burden of the iterative detection is greatly alleviated and the system performance can be flexibly improved within moderate iterations. The width of the optimum frequency gap is found to be ${\sim} {\hbox {0.35}}$ sideband BW, which is reached by trading the levels of signal–signal beat interference and the residual image beat interference. Such a gapped VSSB-OFDM system requires fewer iterations to extract the desired data from the interfered signal and exhibits greater robustness against the carrier-to-signal-power ratio (CSPR) variation, compared with the gapless VSSB-OFDM. In this paper, the analytical model of the proposed gapped VSSB-OFDM system will be addressed. In addition, we also successfully conduct a gapped VSSB-OFDM signal transmission over 1600 km of uncompensated standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with only ${\sim} {\hbox {3}}$ dB optical SNR (OSNR) penalty, and obtain a significant OSNR sensitivity improvement of ${\sim} {\hbox {8}}$ dB, compared with the gapless VSSB-OFDM, after such a 1600-km fiber link.
