To evaluate the antibacterial properties of Allium sativum (garlic) cloves and Zingiber officinale (ginger) rhizomes against multi-drug resistant clinical pathogens causing nosocomial infection. The cloves of garlic and rhizomes of ginger were extracted with 95% (v/v) ethanol. The ethanolic extracts were subjected to antibacterial sensitivity test against clinical pathogens. Anti-bacterial potentials of the extracts of two crude garlic cloves and ginger rhizomes were tested against five gram negative and two gram positive multi-drug resistant bacteria isolates. All the bacterial isolates were susceptible to crude extracts of both plants extracts. Except Enterobacter sp. and Klebsiella sp., all other isolates were susceptible when subjected to ethanolic extracts of garlic and ginger. The highest inhibition zone was observed with garlic (19.45 mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). The minimal inhibitory concentration was as low as 67.00 µg/mL against P. aeruginosa. Natural spices of garlic and ginger possess effective anti-bacterial activity against multi-drug clinical pathogens and can be used for prevention of drug resistant microbial diseases and further evaluation is necessary.

Exopolysaccharides (EPS) are exogenous microbial metabolites generated predominantly during the development of bacteria. They have several biological potentials, including antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer actions. Polysaccharide-coated nanoparticles have high biological activity and are used in treatments and diagnostics. In this research, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are synthesized and conjugated with bacterial (Bacillus sp. MKUST-01) exopolysaccharide (EPS). Initially, the creation of SeNPs conjugates was verified through UV–Vis spectral examination, which exhibited a prominent peak at 264 nm. Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis further substantiated the existence of crystalline Se, as evidenced by a robust reflection at 29.78°. Another reflection observed at 23.76° indicated the presence of carbon originating from the EPS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis of the EPS capped with SeNPs displayed characteristic peaks at 3425 cm−1, 2926 cm−1, 1639 cm−1, and 1411 cm−1, corresponding to the presence of O-H, C-H, C=O, and COO–groups. The SeNPs themselves were found to possess elongated rod-shaped structures with lengths ranging from 250 to 550 nm and a diameter of less than 70 nm, as confirmed using scanning electron microscopy and particle size analysis. In contrast to the SeNPs, the SeNPs–EPS conjugates showed no hemolytic activity. The overall antioxidant activity of SeNPs–EPS conjugates outperformed 20% higher than SeNPs and EPS. Additionally, experimental observations involving gnotobiotic Artemia nauplii experiments were also recorded, such as the supplementation of EPS and SeNPs–EPS conjugates corresponding to enhanced growth and increased survival rates compared to Artemia nauplii fed with SeNPs and a microalgal diet.

This study emphasis the production of yellow pigment from endolichenic Bacillus sp. isolated from the lichen Dirinaria aegialita (Afzel. ex Ach.) B.J. Moore. Yellow pigment-producing twenty different strains were investigated. The hyperactive pigment-producing bacterial strain was identified as Bacillus gibsonii based on 99 % sequence similarity. Maximum bacterial pigment production appeared in Luria Bertani medium. Methanol extraction of the pigment and its partial purification using TLC was carried out. Furthermore, isolated pigments were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and GC-MS results related to the possibility of the carotenoid occurrence. The pigment also exhibited efficient antifungal activity against selected fungal pathogens of economic importance. Likewise, the pigment extract evaluated for the total antioxidant potential using Phosphomolybdenum and Ferric reducing antioxidant power assay and the results represented in Ascorbic Acid Equivalent (AAE)- 21.45 ± 1.212 mg/mL. The SC50 of the pigment extract found to be 75.125 ± 0.18 µg/ml determined by the ABTS assay.

The chemical microstructural, physical, and thermal properties of the Morus alba L. stem fibers (MAFs) are described for the first time in this work. By analyzing the results of chemical composition, it was observed that the cellulose content of the stem of MAFs is an acceptable value when compared with other fibers and showed better results. Due to their lightweight (1316 kg/m3) and the presence of high cellulose content (58.65%) with very little amount of wax (0.56%), they provide good bonding properties. In addition, analyzing the results of X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we observe a degree of crystallinity of 62.06%, which is closely associated with the presence of crystalline cellulose, while the other components are amorphous. The diameter of the extracted cellulosic fibers was in the range 6–20 µm. Moreover, it was possible to identify the degradation step of each primary component of lignocellulosic fiber and to observe that it is thermally stable up to 216°C. The characterization results show that the MAF is a better replacement material for synthetic fibers because of its significant physical, chemical, and thermal properties.

Musa paradisiaca L. blossom petal (MPBP) fibers are extracted from banana plant agro-based domestic waste. The properties of MPBP fibers were reported for the first time in this communication. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the crystallinity index and size of 56.71% and 16.38 nm, respectively. The thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the MPBP fibers are thermally stable up to 220°C. Differential Scanning Calorimetry analysis gives two thermal degradation temperatures of 368.1 and 476.8°C with kinetic activation energy of 62.43 kJ. Tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and strain at failure were determined from the single fiber tensile test as 108 MPa, 1.05 GPa, and 11.15%, respectively.
