Nano zero-valent iron particles (nZVFe) are known as one of the most effective materials for the treatment of contaminated water. However, a strong tendency to agglomerate has been reported as one of their major drawbacks. The present study describes a green approach to synthesizing stabilized nZVFe, using biomass as a porous support material. Therefore, in the first step, biomass-derived activated carbon was prepared by thermochemical procedure from rice straw (RSAC), and then the RSAC-supported nZVFe composite (nZVFe–RSAC) was employed to extract Pb(II) from aqueous solution and was successfully synthesized by the sodium borohydride reduction method. It was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characteristics that the nZVFe particles are uniformly dispersed. Results of the batch experiments showed that 6 (g L−1) of this nanocomposite could effectively remove about 97% of Pb(II) ions at pH = 6 from aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacities of the RS, RSAC, and nZVFe–RSAC were 23.3, 67.8, and 140.8 (mg g−1), respectively. Based on the results of the adsorption isotherm studies, the adsorption of Pb(II) on nZVFe–RSAC is consistent with the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm model R2=0.996). The thermodynamic outcomes exhibited the endothermic, possible, and spontaneous nature of adsorption. Adsorption enthalpy and entropy values were determined as 32.2 kJ mol−1 and 216.9 J mol−1 K−1, respectively. Adsorption kinetics data showed that Pb(II) adsorption onto nZVFe–RSAC was fitted well according to a pseudo-second-order model. Most importantly, the investigation of the adsorption mechanism showed that nZVFe particles are involved in the removal of Pb(II) ions through two main processes, namely Pb adsorption on the surface of nZVFe particles and direct role in the redox reaction. Subsequently, all intermediates produced through the redox reaction between nZVFe and Pb(II) were adsorbed on the nZVFe–RSAC surface. According to the results of the NZVFe–RSAC recyclability experiments, even after five cycles of recovery, this nanocomposite can retain more than 60% of its initial removal efficiency. So, the nZVFe–RSAC nanocomposite could be a promising material for permeable reactive barriers given its potential for removing Pb(II) ions. Due to low-cost and wide availability of iron salts as well as rice biowaste, combined with the high adsorption capacity, make nZVFe–RSAC an appropriate choice for use in the field of Pb(II) removal from contaminated water.

A field study was conducted on sugar beet during a two-year period to investigate the effects and comparison of different irrigation methods and treatments on crop yield, irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), and pan coefficient determination in a semiarid region with limited water resources. The experiments were in complete randomized blocks design. Three replications were used with different levels of irrigation water amounts (25, 50, 75, and 100%), evapotranspiration (ET) of sugar beet seasonal water requirement with surface drip tape (SDT), and conventional furrow irrigation method (CFI), with and without soil and water monitoring, and comparison with CROPWAT modeling. The variety of sugar beet was Rasool. The highest and lowest average irrigation water use efficiencies on the basis of root yield with 16.16 and 9 kg/m3 , and sugar yield with 3.82 and 1.33 kg/m3 , for both experimental years was achieved under different irrigation treatments of T4 (25% ET) SDT and CFI, respectively. The results of ...

Water consumption management and the application of advanced techniques in the agricultural sector can significantly contribute to the efficient utilization of limited water resources. This can be achieved by improving soil texture, increasing water retention, reducing erosion, and enhancing seedling germination through the use of superabsorbent polymers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Aquasource superabsorbent (AS) on the morphological characteristics, phytochemical properties, antioxidant content, and water use efficiency of peppermint. It was conducted under different irrigation management and using different superabsorbent levels. Therefore, a 3 × 4 factorial design was used to determine the effects of irrigation intervals (2-, 4-, and 6-day) and different levels of AS amount (zero [control], 0.5, 1, and 2 wt%). The effects of these factors on various parameters (morphological characteristics, essential oil percentage, nutrient, protein, proline, carotenoid, antioxidant, and chlorophyll content, leaf area index, relative water content, and water use efficiency [WUE]) were evaluated. The results showed that morphological characteristics and essential oil percentage decreased significantly under drought stress (increasing the irrigation intervals). However, the addition of 0.5 (wt%) AS improved plant growth conditions. Increasing the amount of superabsorbent used to 1 and 2 (wt%) decreased the measured traits, which indicates the creation of unsuitable conditions for plant growth. AS application improved the growth of the root more than the leaf yield of peppermint. A 0.5 (wt%) addition of AS resulted in root length increases of 3, 13, and 15%, respectively, at irrigation intervals of 2, 4, and 6 days, respectively. Additionally, at 0.5 (wt%) AS, root weight increased by 8, 15, and 16% in 2-, 4-, and 6-day irrigation intervals, respectively. Also, the height of the plant increased by 3, 5, and 17% at 2-, 4-, and 6-day irrigation intervals when 0.5 (wt%) of AS was used compared to the control. As well, essential oil percentage increased by 2.14, 2.06, and 1.63% at 2-, 4-, and 6-day irrigation intervals. The nutrient and protein contents decreased as irrigation intervals and AS usage increased, indicating a similar trend. However, compared with the control, the addition of 0.5 (wt%) of AS resulted in some improvements in nutrients and protein. The highest WUE (3.075 kg m−3) was attained in the 4-day irrigation interval and 1 wt% AS addition. This was followed closely by the 2-day irrigation interval with 1 wt% AS addition at 3.025 kg m−3, and the 4-day irrigation interval with 0.5 wt% AS addition, which reached 2.941 kg m−3. Overall, the use of AS in appropriate amounts (0.5 wt%) can reduce water consumption and enhance essential oil yield and WUE in peppermint cultivation in water-scarce arid and semi-arid regions.

Lysimetric experiments were conducted to investigate groundwater contributions made by safflower crop (Carthamus tinctorius L.). The plants were grown in 24 columns, each with a diameter of 0.40 m and packed with silty clay soil. The factorial manner experiments were carried out with four replicates using randomized complete block design with different treatment combinations. Six treatments were applied in each experiment by maintaining groundwater salinity with electric conductivity (EC) of 10 dS/m and different water table levels of 0.60, 0.80, and 1.10 m, with and without irrigation strategies. The use of groundwater as a part of crop evapotranspiration was determined by taking daily measurements of the water levels in Mariotte tubes. Additional irrigation in the form of surface water was applied for each treatment with EC of 1 dS/m. The results of the experiments show that for different treatments, with and without irrigation and different water table levels of 0.60, 0.80, and 1.10 m, the average pe...
