The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is a significant concern in today’s rapidly urbanising cities, with exacerbating heatwaves’ impact, urban livelihood, and environmental well-being. This study aims to assess the cooling effect of blue-green spaces in Bhubaneswar, India, and explore their implications for mitigating UHI effects. Satellite images were processed with Google Earth Engine (GEE) to produce information on the blue-green spaces’ land surface temperatures (LST). The Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Modified Normalised Difference Water Index (MNDWI) were employed to quantify the presence and characteristics of these blue-green spaces. The findings revealed significant spatial variations in the LST, with higher temperatures observed in bare land and built-up areas and lower temperatures in proximity to the blue-green spaces. In addition, a correlation analysis indicated the strong influence of the built-up index (NDBI) on the LST, emphasising the impact of urbanisation on local climate dynamics. The analysis demonstrated the potential of blue-green spaces in reducing surface temperatures and mitigating UHI effects. Based on these results, strategic interventions were proposed, such as increasing the coverage of green spaces, optimising access to water bodies, and integrating water-sensitive design principles into urban planning to enhance the cooling effects and foster a more sustainable and resilient urban environment. This study highlighted the importance of leveraging remote sensing and GEE for urban UHI analyses. It provides valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners to prioritise nature-based solutions for heat mitigation in Bhubaneswar and other similar cities. Future research could delve deeper into a quantitative assessment of the cooling benefits of specific blue-green infrastructure interventions and explore their socio-economic impacts on urban communities.

The transportation sector faces severe consequences due to the incrementing population influx yielding congestions, fatalities and haphazard traffic scenarios. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) assists highly in such scenarios by eradicating probable accidents and ensures traffic safety. This paper presents intelligent transportation systems (ITS) approach through the connected vehicle technology infrastructure. YOLO v4 (You Only Look Once) inspired real-time computer vision capable of detecting vehicles, pedestrians and animals at high efficiency (0.9777 mean average precision) is deployed on the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) which offered higher frame rate of detection (74.26 fps). The locations of animals and potholes were mapped through consistent survey and mobile app which relayed the detected locations to the cloud server forming a geospatial database. Clustered locations from the geospatial database on dense transportation network were utilized for constructing animal and pothole hotspot zones. A basic level of display warning was triggered when the vehicle approached animal and pothole areas. Furthermore, advanced alert comprising of display and sound alert was trigger when the vehicle approached hotspot zones. This was implemented using real-time Internet of things (IoT) and cloud infrastructure applications for continuous vehicle’s location monitoring and triggering as per the hotspot geo-locations. The proposed system ensured traffic safety and assisted in avoiding probable crashes and accidents that generally led to congestions and fatalities.

Land Use Land Cover (LULC) classification is pivotal to sustainable environment and natural resource management. It is critical in planning, monitoring, and management programs at various local and national levels. Monitoring changes in LULC patterns over time is crucial for understanding evolving landscapes. Traditionally, LULC classification has been achieved through satellite data by remote sensing, geographic information system (GIS) techniques, machine learning classifiers, and deep learning models. Semantic segmentation, a technique for assigning land cover classes to individual pixels in an image, is commonly employed for LULC mapping. In recent years, the deep learning revolution, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), has reshaped the field of computer vision and LULC classification. Deep architectures have consistently outperformed traditional methods, offering greater accuracy and efficiency. However, the availability of high-quality datasets has been a limiting factor. Bridging the gap between modern computer vision and remote sensing data analysis can revolutionize our understanding of the environment and drive breakthroughs in urban planning and ecosystem change research. The "Sen-2 LULC Dataset" has been created to facilitate this convergence. This dataset comprises of 213,761 pre-processed 10 m resolution images representing seven LULC classes. These classes encompass water bodies, dense forests, sparse forests, barren land, built-up areas, agricultural land, and fallow land. Importantly, each image may contain multiple coexisting land use and land cover classes, mirroring the real-world complexity of landscapes. The dataset is derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery sourced from the Copernicus Open Access Hub (https://scihub.copernicus.eu/) platform. It includes spectral bands B4, B3, and B2, corresponding to red, green, and blue (RGB) channels, and offers a spectral resolution of 10 m. The dataset also provides an equal number of mask images. Structured into six folders, the dataset offers training, testing, and validation sets for images and masks. Researchers across various domains can leverage this resource to advance LULC classification in the context of the Indian region. Additionally, it catalyzes fostering collaboration between remote sensing and computer vision communities, enabling novel insights into environmental dynamics and urban planning challenges.
