In modern electronic warfare, cognitive radar with knowledge-aided waveforms would show significant flexibility in anti-interference. In this paper, a novel method, named particle swarm-assisted projection optimization (PSAP), is introduced to design phase-coded waveforms with multi-level low range sidelobes, which mainly considers the stability for randomized initialization under the unimodular constraint. Firstly, the mathematical problem corresponding to avoid the range sidelobe masking from multiple non-cooperative targets or interference is formulated by giving different threat levels. Then, based on the alternating direction decomposition idea, the original problem is divided into triple-variable ones where these non-linear approximations can be solved via alternating projections along with FFT. Furthermore, the PSAP method with swarm intelligence, learning factor, and particle-assisted projection could ensure the optimization convergence in a parallel way, which could relax the non-convex constraint and enhance the global exploiting performance. Finally, simulations for several typical scenarios and numerical results are all provided to assess the waveforms generated by PSAP and other prevalent ones.

In recent years, non-contact human–computer interactions have aroused much attention. In this paper, we mainly propose a dual view observation system based on the frontal and side millimeter-wave radars (MWR) to collect echo data of the Air writing digits “0~9”, simultaneously. Additionally, we also propose a novel distance approximation method to make the trajectory reconstruction more efficient. To exploit these characteristics of spatial-temporal adjacency in handwriting digits, we propose a novel clustering algorithm, named the constrained density-based spatial clustering of application with noise (CDBSCAN), to remove background noise or clutter. Moreover, we also design a robust gesture segmentation method by using twice-difference and high–low thresholds. In our trials and comparisons, based on the trajectories formulated by echo data series of time–distance and time–velocity of dual views, we present a lightweight-based convolution neural network (CNN) to realize these digits recognition. Experiment results show that our system has a relatively high recognition accuracy, which would provide a feasible application for future human–computer interaction scenarios.

Cognitive radar could adapt the spectrum of waveforms in response to information regarding the changing environment, so as to avoid narrowband interference or electronic jamming. Besides stopband constraints, low range sidelobes and unimodular property are also desired. In this paper, we propose a Spectral Approximation Relaxed Alternating Projection (SARAP) method, to synthesize unimodular waveform with low range sidelobes and spectral power suppressed. This novel method, based on phase retrieval and relaxed alternating projection, could convert the correlation optimization into the spectrum approximation via the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Moreover, by virtue of the relaxation factor and accelerated factor, SARAP can exploit local area and more likely converge to the global solution. Numerical trials have demonstrated that SARAP could achieve excellent performance and computational efficiency which will facilitate the real-time design.

Recently, the problem of target detection in noisy environments for the Dual-Functional Radar Communication (DFRC) integration system has been a hot topic. In this paper, to suppress the noise and further enhance the target detection performance, a novel manifold Riemannian Improved Armijo Search Conjugate Gradient algorithm (RIASCG) framework has been proposed which jointly optimizes the integrated transmitting waveform and receiving filter. Therein, the reference waveform is first designed to achieve excellent pattern matching of radar beamforming. Furthermore, to ensure the quality of system information transmission, the energy of multi-user interference (MUI) of communication signals is incorporated as the constraint. Additionally, the typical similarity constraint is introduced to ensure the transmitting waveform with a good ambiguity function. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the designed waveform not only enhances the system’s target detection performance in noisy environments but also achieves a relatively good multi-user communication ability when compared with other prevalent waveforms.

Modern cognitive radars, armed with knowledge-aided waveforms, exhibit considerable effectiveness in detecting low-speed, small Radar Cross-Section (RCS) targets, while demonstrating resilience in electronic countermeasure scenarios. In this paper, we introduce a novel technique named p a rticle fi lte r based r ecurrent w a veform optimiza tion (ALTERATION) to design unimodular waveforms with tailored range-Doppler profiles and Low Probability of Intercept (LPI), thereby enhancing radar performance in complex environments. ALTERATION leverages the power of Particle Filters (PFs) in conjunction with iterative optimization methods. Our approach begins with Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) waveforms regularized by chaotic-phase terms serving as the initial particles. During each PF iteration, these particles are evolved via an alternating optimization method dovetailed with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) operations. A specially proposed perturbation scheme corresponding to the deployed optimization method is then applied to weigh particles according to their auto-correlation levels, facilitating resampling to produce the new particle set for the next PF iteration. Moreover, ALTERATION is designed to readily integrate low-resolution phase quantization, thereby further mitigating hardware costs while maintaining near-optimal waveforms. Numerical comparisons illustrate that our ALTERATION approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art alternatives, indicating its potential for application in cognitive radar systems.
