The present study aimed to characterize the chemical composition of pyroligneous acid (PA) obtained from slow pyrolysis of the clone GG100 of Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis. The efficiency of extraction of organic compounds by using different solvents—dichloromethane (DCM), diethyl ether (DE) and ethyl acetate (EA)—was evaluated. Wood discs were collected and carbonized at a heating rate of 1.25 °C/min until 450 °C. Pyrolysis gases were trapped and condensed, yielding a crude liquid product (CLP), which was refined to obtain pure PA. Then liquid–liquid extraction was carried out. Each extracted fraction was analyzed by GC-MS and the chemical compounds were identified. Experimental results showed that a larger number of chemical compounds could be extracted by using DCM and EA in comparison to diethyl ether DE. A total number of 93 compounds were identified, with phenolic compounds being the major group, followed by aldehydes and ketones, furans, pyrans and esters. Higher contents of guaiacol, phenol, cresols and furfural seem to explain the antibacterial and antifungal activity shown by PA, as reported previously in the literature. Experimental data indicated that the organic phase extracted from GG100 PA consists of a mixture of compounds similar to liquid smokes regularly used in the food industry.

The global supply chain of wood products plays a key role in sustainable development and climate resilience, but remains fragmented in the academic and technical literature. This systematic review aims to synthesize research published between 2000 and 2025 on wood products’ production, transformation, trade, governance, and sustainability. A comprehensive search was conducted in multiple databases and repositories, including Scopus, FAOSTAT, ScienceDirect, DOAJ, SciELO, CAPES, EMBRAPA, and AGNIC. A total of 784 records were identified and, after applying eligibility and deduplication criteria, 119 documents were included in the final synthesis. The results reveal key thematic trends, including the dynamics of international timber trade, certification and traceability systems, logistical challenges, digitalization, and integration of forest policies. Key gaps include limited inclusion of smallholders, low technology adoption in the Global South, and fragmented governance mechanisms. The results suggest that improving sustainability in global timber supply chains requires coordinated policy frameworks, technological investment, and inclusive market systems. This review contributes a consolidated overview and offers insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in the forestry sector.

Among the parameters used in the biomass carbonization process, the heating rate is one of the most important. The objective of the present work was to assess the influence of different heating rates on the chemical composition of wood vinegar (WV) from two wood species. Dried disks of Eucalyptus grandis and Mimosa tenuiflora wood were used as raw material. Carbonization runs were carried out in a laboratory muffle furnace at three heating rates (0.7, 1.0 and 1.4 °C/min), with 10 runs at each heating rate, reaching 450 °C. Yields of charcoal, pyrolysis liquids and gases were determined for all carbonization conditions. Crude pyrolysis liquid from each wood species and each heating rate was bi-distilled, yielding purified WV samples. These samples were extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic fraction was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to obtain qualitative and semi-quantitative data. Results showed that lower heating rates produce higher yields of charcoal, while higher heating rates lead to higher yields of pyrolysis liquids and gases. Totals of 57 and 42 chemical compounds were identified in the WV of Eucalyptus and Mimosa, respectively, divided into the following groups: alcohols, ketones, furans and pyrans, and phenolic compounds. In general, higher heating rates led to greater contents of furans and pyrans and lower concentrations of phenolic compounds.
