Vascular interventional surgery (VIS) robots are capable of performing various operations such as drug delivery, coil filling, balloon stent expansion, percutaneous catheter ablation, thrombectomy, and more. Some reviews of VIS robots have focused on slave robots and master controllers. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no review paper on the comprehensive description of all technologies of the VIS robots. Therefore, this paper comprehensively analyzes the key technologies of VIS robot. First, according to the type of VIS, the progress of the VIS robots and some typical applications are summarized. Second, the research status and existing problems of four key technologies related to the VIS robots are discussed: surgical instrument delivery system, force perception and haptic feedback technology, surgical navigation with multimodal image fusion and virtual surgical systems. Finally, we analyze the obstacles to VIS robot development and outline the future directions of active research areas.

Soft wearable devices for hand rehabilitation can assist activities of daily living. While existing soft robotic gloves can help with finger flexion, they are less suitable for patients who cannot extend their fingers due to poststroke increased muscular tension. In this letter, we proposed a variable stiffness pneumatic actuator that effectively increases the elasticity of the actuator to facilitate finger extension. The actuator consists of a fiber-reinforced actuator and a multi-stage articulated elastomer. It bends and extends by pneumatic actuation, with multi-stage articulated elastomer providing stiffness adjustment to accommodate varying joint resistance. The variable stiffness mechanism was achieved by the multi layered discrete metal plates which can gracefully fit the unique structure of human fingers. Analysis models were established to quantify the actuator's air pressure, vacuum pressure, and bending angle, also to predict the actuator's stiffness under different vacuum pressures. Experiments and finite element simulation were carried out to evaluate the bending performance of the actuator. Meanwhile, the output force and variable stiffness characteristic of the actuator were tested. The results show that the actuator can achieve 1.54 N fingertip output force and 2.4 times stiffness change, which satisfy the requirement of stroke patient. In addition, a clenched artificial hand with similar damper forces to human hand was applied to further verify the extending effect of the variable stiffness actuator. Finally, a rehabilitation glove integrated with multiple actuators was tested to assess typical rehabilitation gestures and the ability to grasp daily objects.

Hitherto, automated grasping with robotic grippers requires adjusting the posture and force of the fingers based on the size, geometry, stiffness, and pose of the objects. To provide a simpler but efficient grasping methodology, a soft enveloping gripper is presented and investigated how its morphological adaptability improves the grasping ability by comparing its performance with fingered grippers. Results show that this enveloping gripper can omnidirectionally envelop objects via active–passive interaction, which allows the gripper to 100% grasp the object located at different positions within range and keep their orientations. However, the grasping success rate and orientation error of the fingered grippers highly depend on the relative position and angle of the objects to the grippers, as well as the number of fingers. The dynamic vibration and decay time of the enveloping gripper when grasping a 500 g weight are, both, approximately one‐sixth of those of the two‐fingered gripper when grasping a 12.37 g cube. This enveloping gripper can automatically grasp objects (including deformable ones) lying in different poses without posture estimation and force control with a simple vision‐based automatic grasping method. The enveloping grasping method may open an avenue for simple, low cost yet powerful automatic grasping applications.

The wearable exoskeleton system is a typical strongly coupled human–robotic system. Human–robotic is the environment for each other. The two support each other and compete with each other. Achieving high human–robotic compatibility is the most critical technology for wearable systems. Full structural compatibility can improve the intrinsic safety of the exoskeleton, and precise intention understanding and motion control can improve the comfort of the exoskeleton. This paper first designs a physiologically functional bionic lower limb exoskeleton based on the study of bone and joint functional anatomy and analyzes the drive mapping model of the dual closed-loop four-link knee joint. Secondly, an exoskeleton dual closed-loop controller composed of a position inner loop and a force outer loop is designed. The inner loop of the controller adopts the PID control algorithm, and the outer loop adopts the adaptive admittance control algorithm based on human–robot interaction force (HRI). The controller can adaptively adjust the admittance parameters according to the HRI to respond to dynamic changes in the mechanical and physical parameters of the human–robot system, thereby improving control compliance and the wearing comfort of the exoskeleton system. Finally, we built a joint simulation experiment platform based on SolidWorks/Simulink to conduct virtual prototype simulation experiments and recruited volunteers to wear rehabilitation exoskeletons to conduct related control experiments. Experimental results show that the designed physiologically functional bionic exoskeleton and adaptive admittance controller can significantly improve the accuracy of human–robotic joint motion tracking, effectively reducing human–machine interaction forces and improving the comfort and safety of the wearer. This paper proposes a dual-closed loop four-link knee joint exoskeleton and a variable admittance control method based on HRI, which provides a new method for the design and control of exoskeletons with high compatibility.
