This paper aims to review, systematically synthesize, and analyze fragmented information about the importance of coat color in local goats and its relationship with productivity and other important traits. Topics on current research on color expression are addressed, the relationship that has as a mechanism of environmental adaptation, its relationship with the production of meat, milk, and derivates, and the economic value of this characteristic. The use of this attribute as a tool to establish selection criteria in breeding programs based on results reported in the scientific literature is significant, particularly for low-income production systems, where the implementation of classic genetic improvement schemes is limited due to the lack of productive information, which is distinctive of extensive marginal or low scaled production systems around the world.
Objective: To carry out a reproductive characterization of the breeds of hair ewe in the tropical region of the Americas. Design/Methodology/Approach: A search of scientific information about the reproductive variables of breeds of hair ewe was carried out and the results were analyzed in the Web of Science, Redalyc, Dialnet, PubMed, SciELO, and Latindex databases. Results: We described and discussed the highly-variable onset of puberty in ewe lambs. Similar results were found in adult ewes regarding the duration and occurrence of the estrous, estrous cycle length, seasonal anestrous, ovulation rate, fertility, gestation, and prolificacy. Study Limitations/Implications: Information about the reproductive variables of breeds of hair ewe is poorly known or non-existent. Findings/Conclusions: The onset of puberty in 15-43 kg ewe lambs ranges from 175 to 335 d of age. The estrous cycle of hair ewe in Mexico lasts 17 d in autumn-winter and 21 d in spring-summer. In Brazil, this cycle lasts 17 d in spring-summer and 18 d in autumn-winter. In the United States of America and Venezuela, the estrous cycle length was similar in both periods of the year. The occurrence of the estrous reached 97.1 % in autumn-winter and 76.5 % in spring-summer. The duration of the estrous ranges from 16 to 52 hours. Seasonal anestrous occurs from May to July. The ovulation rate ranges from 1 to 3 oocytes. The percentage of fertility fluctuates between 80 and 100 % in temperate months and reaches 37 % in warm ones. Gestation lasts from 144 to 152 d. Prolificacy ranges from 1.0 to 2.2 offspring per ewe. The lambing interval ranges from 244 to 294 d.

The ultrasound allows to visualize the female reproductive tract and helps to understand some of the most relevant reproductive events such as follicular and corpus luteum development, ovulation, pregnancy diagnosis, uterine infections, embryo and fetal growth, among others. Nowadays, there is a massive amount of information regarding the physiology and ultrasonography of the reproductive events mentioned above. However, the overwhelming number of available papers review technical aspects of ultrasonography, physiology and reproductive management separately. Therefore, the objective of the present review is to merge a physiological description with reproductive management and technical aspects of original ultrasound pictures of the most relevant reproductive events in dairy cattle to promote ultrasound use during dairy cattle reproductive management by practitioners and researchers.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the interaction between feeding level (FL) and body condition score (BCS) on the reproductive parameters of Pelibuey hair sheep (Ovis aries). The experimental units (64 ewes) were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: low feeding level and low body condition score; high feeding level and low body condition score; low feeding level and high body condition score; and high feeding level and high body condition score. The effect of sheep body condition score was significant on the pregnancy and lambing rates. The effect of feeding level was significant on the ovulation, estrus returning, pregnancy, and prolificacy rates. The interaction effect between BCS and FL was significant on the ovulation, estrus returning, pregnancy, lambing, and prolificacy rates. The reproductive function is more sensitive to the better nutrition effects in sheep with a low body condition score.
