With the ever-increasing demand in urban mobility and modern logistics sector, the vehicle population has been steadily growing over the past several decades. One natural consequence of the vehicle population growth is the increase in traffic congestion. Almost all (metropolitan) cities including the major ones, like Los Angeles, Beijing, New York, are suffering from heavy traffic congestion. Statistics show that, in 2015, 43 cities in China are suffering a prolonged travel time of more than 1.5 h every day during rush hours. In the meanwhile, traffic accidents are plaguing the economic development as well.

Deploying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for traffic monitoring has been a hotspot given their flexibility and broader view. However, a UAV is usually constrained by battery capacity due to limited payload. On the other hand, the development of wireless charging technology has allowed UAVs to replenish energy from charging stations. In this paper, we study a UAV routing problem in the presence of multiple charging stations (URPMCS) with the objective of minimizing the total distance traveled by the UAV during traffic monitoring. We present a deep reinforcement learning based method, where a multi-head heterogeneous attention mechanism is designed to facilitate learning a policy that automatically and sequentially constructs the route, while taking the energy consumption into account. In our method, two types of attentions are leveraged to learn the relations between monitoring targets and charging station nodes, adopting an encoder-decoder-like policy network. Moreover, we also employ a curriculum learning strategy to enhance generalization to different numbers of charging stations. Computational results show that our method outperforms conventional algorithms with higher solution quality (except for exact methods such as Gurobi) and shorter runtime in general, and also exhibits strong generalized performance on problem instances with different distributions and sizes.

This paper investigates the real time LiDAR odometry and mapping (LOAM) problem in unstructured environments. We propose E-LOAM (LOAM with Expanded Local Structural Information), a paradigm which expands the pre-extracted geometric information with local point cloud information around the geometric feature points. State-of-the-art approaches usually extract pointed geometric features as the only correspondence primitives for point cloud scan-to-scan and scan-to-map registration. We argue that, in unstructured environments, sometimes, the extracted geometric features are too sparse for adequate point cloud registration. Therefore, E-LOAM expands the ‘pointed’ geometric correspondence primitives with the point clouds around them, i.e., the local point clouds in the voxel around the feature point. The local point clouds, approximated by a multivariate normal distribution, offer additional local structural information, on top of the pointed geometric information. Additionally, to enrich the sparse geometric features, we make use of the intensity information of point clouds, and extract the places with high intensity variations as additional feature points. Experimental results with KITTI dataset show the efficacy of E-LOAM, when compared with state of the arts. We further implement E-LOAM on a real robot platform, and evaluate E-LOAM with in-field tests.

Reducing traffic delay is of crucial importance for the development of sustainable transportation systems, which is a challenging task in the studies of stochastic shortest path (SSP) problem. Existing methods based on the probability tail model to solve the SSP problem, seek for the path that minimizes the probability of delay occurrence, which is equal to maximizing the probability of reaching the destination before a deadline (i.e., arriving on time). However, they suffer from low accuracy or high computational cost. Therefore, we design a novel and practical Q-learning approach where the converged Q-values have the practical meaning as the actual probabilities of arriving on time so as to improve the accuracy of finding the real optimal path. By further adopting dynamic neural networks to learn the value function, our approach can scale well to large road networks with arbitrary deadlines. Moreover, our approach is flexible to implement in a time dependent manner, which further improves the performance of returned path. Experimental results on some road networks with real mobility data, such as Beijing, Munich and Singapore, demonstrate the significant advantages of the proposed approach over other methods.

Purpose. Powered lower-limb exoskeleton has gained considerable interests, since it can help patients with spinal cord injury(SCI) to stand and walk again. Providing walking assistance with SCI patients, most exoskeletons are designed to follow predefined gait trajectories, which makes the patient walk unnaturally and feels uncomfortable. Furthermore, exoskeletons with predefined gait trajectories cannot always maintain balance walking especially when encountering disturbances. Design/Methodology/Approach. This paper proposed a novel gait planning approach, which aims to provide reliable and balance gait during walking assistance. In this approach, we model the exoskeleton and patient together as a linear inverted pendulum (LIP) and obtain the patients intention through orbital energy diagram. To achieve dynamic gait planning of exoskeleton, the dynamic movement primitive (DMP) is utilized to model the gait trajectory. Meanwhile, the parameters of DMP are updated dynamically during one step, which aims to improve the ability of counteracting external disturbance. Findings. The proposed approach is validated in a human-exoskeleton simulation platform, and the experimental results show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed approach. Originality/Value. We decomposed the issue of obtain dynamic balance gait into three parts: (1) based on the sensory information of exoskeleton, the intention estimator is designed to estimate the intention of taking a step; (2) at the beginning of each step, the discrete gait planner utilized the obtained gait parameters such as step length S and step duration T and generate the trajectory of swing foot based on S,T; (3) during walking process, continuous gait regulator is utilized to adjust the gait generated by discrete gait planner to counteract disturbance.

Arriving on time and total travel time are two important properties for vehicle routing. Existing route guidance approaches always consider them independently, because they may conflict with each other. In this article, we develop a semi-decentralized multiagent-based vehicle routing approach where vehicle agents follow the local route guidance by infrastructure agents at each intersection, and infrastructure agents perform the route guidance by solving a route assignment problem. It integrates the two properties by expressing them as two objective terms of the route assignment problem. Regarding arriving on time, it is formulated based on the probability tail model, which aims to maximize the probability of reaching destination before deadline. Regarding total travel time, it is formulated as a weighted quadratic term, which aims to minimize the expected travel time from the current location to the destination based on the potential route assignment. The weight for total travel time is designed to be comparatively large if the deadline is loose. Additionally, we improve the proposed approach in two aspects, including travel time prediction and computational efficiency. Experimental results on real road networks justify its ability to increase the average probability of arriving on time, reduce total travel time, and enhance the overall routing performance.
