Muhammad Umar focuses on research related to advanced treatment technologies for the treatment of drinking water and wastewater reuse. He is interested in novel technologies, such as ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs), for the degradation/removal of organics and emerging contaminants such as antimicrobial resistance genes. He has strong experience in the reuse/safe discharge of complex wastewater matrices (e.g., reverse osmosis brine, landfill leachate) using different physico-chemical and biological treatment processes for enhanced performance and energy efficiency. He is also interested in developing robust treatment solutions for small-scale communities, road run-off/tunnel washwater treatment, and swimming pool water treatment.
