From 1975, he was clinical researcher at the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Pisa, then an Aggregate Professor. From 1980, in the Internal Medicine Unit, he took care of oncological patients, mostly breast and colorectal cancer patients; these patients underwent intensive follow-up programs focused on the use of tumor markers for the early diagnosis of recurrences. For many years, he also had the responsibility of adjuvant and salvage treatments of oncological patients. In2014, he retired from the academy; however, he continues to take care of patients in an outpatient setting.
Research interests include malignant solid tumors, in particular, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and their metastases, tumor markers, and post-operative follow-up; physiopathology, and immunology and immunotherapy of cancer; thyroid tumors.
