Many practical issues arise when dealing with solid waste management, and there are also environmental effects to be considered. Selecting landfill sites requires extra care with respect to many factors such as the environment, health hazards for people, and the cost of transportation. Furthermore, cities have their own rules, methods, and practices for managing and selecting the best locations for collecting solid waste. In this research, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) was presented and used to evaluate the appropriateness of and suggest the best locations for landfill sites in Najran, KSA. Some remote sensing data and the ArcGIS software were used to prepare nine thematic layers, including drainage density, groundwater depth, land use, soil type, road network, surface elevation, surface slope, distance from residential areas, and distance from protected areas. To evaluate the layer weightings, a questionnaire with pairwise comparisons was distributed among experts and analyzed using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy set technique. The one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) sensitivity test was conducted to test the sensitivity of the evaluated weightings. A landfill suitability index (LSI) map was created using raster calculator tools and divided into five classes: limited suitability (LSI value 1.39–2.49), least suitable (2.50–3.03), relatively suitable (3.04–3.48), suitable (3.49–3.91), and most suitable (3.92–4.66). According to the statistical analysis, 18.0% and 18.2% of the total area were within the most suitable and suitable landfill regions, while 21.2%, 14.9%, and 9.5% accounted for relatively suitable, least suitable, and limited suitability areas, respectively. The employed technique and its findings can provide an appropriate guideline to assist the municipality of Najran city, regional planners, and decision-makers in selecting an optimal landfill site in the future. This study also presented some recommendations to enhance the suitability map of landfill sites in Najran city.

The increasing complexity of urban building energy systems necessitates advanced prediction methods for efficient energy management. Urban buildings account for approximately 40% of global energy consumption, making accurate prediction crucial for sustainability goals. This research develops a novel transformer-based deep learning framework for multi-building energy consumption forecasting. Despite recent advances in energy prediction techniques, existing models struggle with multi-building scenarios due to limited ability to capture cross-building correlations, inadequate integration of diverse data streams, and poor scalability when deployed at urban scale—gaps this research specifically addresses. The study implemented a modified transformer architecture with hierarchical attention mechanisms, processing data from 100 commercial buildings across three climate zones over three years (2020–2023). The framework incorporated weather parameters, occupancy patterns, and historical energy consumption data through multi-head attention layers, employing a 4000-step warm-up period and adaptive regularization techniques. The evaluation included a comparison with the baseline models (ARIMA, LSTM, GRU) and robustness testing. The framework achieved a 23.7% improvement in prediction accuracy compared to traditional methods, with a mean absolute percentage error of 3.2%. Performance remained stable across building types, with office complexes showing the highest accuracy (MAPE = 2.8%) and healthcare facilities showing acceptable variance (MAPE = 3.5%). The model-maintained prediction stability under severe data perturbations while demonstrating near-linear computational scaling. The transformer-based approach significantly enhances building energy prediction capabilities, enabling more effective demand-side management strategies, though future research should address long-term adaptability.

In arid regions like Saudi Arabia, accurate precipitation data are crucial for water resource management and climate studies. However, satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) can contain uncertainties, impacting their reliability. This study evaluated the accuracy of five high-resolution SPPs [IMERG-V06 variants, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)-3B42V7, and Soil Moisture to Rain (SM2RAIN)-Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT)] over Saudi Arabia. We compared daily, monthly, and yearly precipitation estimates from SPPs with in situ rain gauge data (2010–2022) using both continuous and categorical metrics. The evaluation encompassed point-to-pixel comparisons, regional analysis, and national assessments. All SPPs effectively captured the spatiotemporal patterns of precipitation across the country. Notably, monthly estimates showed stronger agreement with rain gauge data than daily estimates, as indicated by higher correlation coefficients. IMERG products generally outperformed SM2RAIN-ASCAT and TRMM, with IMERG-LR exhibiting superior performance in estimating monthly precipitation. However, underestimation of light precipitation events (<2 mm/day) was observed across all SPPs. In addition, their ability to detect moderate and heavy precipitation events remained uncertain, requiring further investigation. While IMERG-FR showed reduced bias and root mean square error compared to IMERG-ER and IMERG-LR, its capability for precipitation event detection did not exhibit significant improvement. This study highlights the need for bias correction of IMERG-LR and IMERG-FR monthly estimates for improved application in hydrometeorological studies in Saudi Arabia. Our findings contribute valuable insights for both data users and SPP algorithm developers, aiming to enhance the accuracy and reliability of satellite-derived precipitation data in arid environments.

Accurate and reliable wave forecasting is crucial for optimizing the performance of various marine operations, such as offshore energy production, shipping, and fishing. Meanwhile, predicting wave height and wave energy is crucial for achieving sustainability as a renewable energy source, as it enables the harnessing of the power of wave energy efficiently based on the water-energy nexus. Advanced wave forecasting models, such as machine learning models and the semi-analytical approach, have been developed to provide more accurate predictions of ocean waves. In this study, the Sverdrup Munk Bretschneider (SMB) semi-analytical approach, Emotional Artificial Neural Network (EANN) approach, and Wavelet Artificial Neural Network (WANN) approach will be used to estimate ocean wave parameters in the Gulf of Mexico and Aleutian Basin. The accuracy and reliability of these approaches will be evaluated, and the spatial and temporal variability of the wave field will be investigated. The available wave characteristics are used to generate hourly, 12-hourly, and daily datasets. The WANN and SMB model shows good performance in the daily prediction of the significant wave height in both case studies. In the SMB model, specifically on a daily time scale, the Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) and the peak deviation coefficient (DCpeak) were determined to be 0.62 and 0.54 for the Aleutian buoy and 0.64 and 0.55 for the Gulf of Mexico buoy, respectively, for significant wave height. In the context of the WANN model and in the testing phase at the daily time scale, the NSE and DCpeak indices exhibit values of 0.85 and 0.61 for the Aleutian buoy and 0.72 and 0.61 for the Gulf of Mexico buoy, respectively, while the EANN model is a strong tool in hourly wave height prediction (Aleutian buoy (NSEEANN = 0.60 and DCpeakEANN = 0.88), Gulf of Mexico buoy (NSEEANN = 0.80 and DCpeakEANN = 0.82)). In addition, the findings pertaining to the energy spectrum density demonstrate that the EANN model exhibits superior performance in comparison to the WANN and SMB models, particularly with regard to accurately estimating the peak of the spectrum (Aleutian buoy (DCpeakEANN= 0.41), Gulf of Mexico buoy (DCpeakEANN = 0.59)).

This study introduces a comprehensive framework combining building information modeling (BIM), project management body of knowledge (PMBOK), and machine learning (ML) to optimize energy efficiency and reduce environmental impacts in Riyadh’s construction sector. The suggested methodology utilizes BIM for dynamic energy simulations and design visualization, PMBOK for integrating sustainability into project-management processes, and ML for predictive modeling and real-time energy optimization. Implementing an integrated model that incorporates building-management strategies and machine learning for both commercial and residential structures can offer stakeholders a thorough solution for forecasting energy performance and environmental impact. This is particularly essential in arid climates owing to specific conditions and environmental limitations. Using a simulation-based methodology, the framework was evaluated based on two representative case studies: (i) a commercial complex and (ii) a residential building. The neural network (NN), reinforcement learning (RL), and decision tree (DT) were implemented to assess performance in energy prediction and optimization. Results demonstrated notable seasonal energy savings, particularly in spring (15% reduction for commercial buildings) and fall (13% reduction for residential buildings), driven by optimized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, insulation strategies, and window configurations. ML models successfully predicted energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enabling targeted mitigation strategies. GHG emissions were reduced by up to 25% in commercial and 20% in residential settings. Among the models, NN achieved the highest predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.95), while RL proved effective in adaptive operational control. This study highlights the synergistic potential of BIM, PMBOK, and ML in advancing green project management and sustainable construction.

Large-scale infrastructure projects often use reactive approaches to manage construction risks. This can result in expensive delays and increased budgets. This study creates and tests a risk prediction framework that uses machine learning, specifically Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (GBDT), to help identify and address risks early in urban infrastructure construction. Data from 220 infrastructure projects, spanning from 2015 to 2024 and located in North America, Europe, and Asia, were analyzed. These projects had values between $50 million and $2 billion USD. The approach combined Principal Component Analysis and GBDT, handling 47 variables related to risk across six different risk areas. To test the model, 5-fold cross-validation was used, along with temporal validation, which involved setting aside the most recent 20% of projects. The GBDT model reached an overall prediction accuracy of 87.3%. It outperformed traditional methods by 23%. The ability to detect risks early on improved significantly, from 45% to 78%, and this led to an average cost reduction of 12.4%. Technical risks had the highest prediction accuracy, at 89.4%, while resource optimization saw a 25.7% improvement in equipment use. This machine learning-based framework is considered to significantly improve construction risk management. It offers better accuracy, earlier risk detection, and cost savings, suggesting it could be widely used in urban infrastructure construction.
