The ripeness phases of jujube fruits are one factor mitigating against fruit detection, in addition to uneven environmental conditions such as illumination variation, leaf occlusion, overlapping fruits, colors or brightness, similar plant appearance to the background, and so on. Therefore, a method called YOLO-Jujube was proposed to solve these problems. With the incorporation of the networks of Stem, RCC, Maxpool, CBS, SPPF, C3, PANet, and CIoU loss, YOLO-Jujube was able to detect jujube fruit automatically for ripeness inspection. Having recorded params of 5.2 m, GFLOPs of 11.7, AP of 88.8%, and a speed of 245 fps for detection performance, including the sorting and counting process combined, YOLO-Jujube outperformed the network of YOLOv3-tiny, YOLOv4-tiny, YOLOv5s, and YOLOv7-tiny. YOLO-Jujube is robust and applicable to meet the goal of a computer vision-based understanding of images and videos.

Accurate detection of muskmelon fruit ripeness is crucial to ensure fruit quality, optimize picking time, and enhance economic benefits. This study proposes an improved lightweight YOLO-RFEW model based on YOLOv8n, aiming to address the challenges of low efficiency in muskmelon fruit ripeness detection and the complexity of deploying a target detection model to a muskmelon picking robot. Firstly, the RFAConv replaces the Conv in the backbone part of YOLOv8n, allowing the network to focus more on regions with significant contributions in feature extraction. Secondly, the feature extraction and fusion capability are enhanced by improving the C2f module into a C2f-FE module based on FasterNet and an Efficient Multi-Scale attention (EMA) mechanism within the lightweight model. Finally, Weighted Intersection over Union (WIoU) is optimized as the loss function to improve target frame prediction capability and enhance target detection accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate that the YOLO-RFEW model achieves high accuracy, with precision, recall, F1 score, and mean Average Precision (mAP) values of 93.16%, 83.22%, 87.91%, and 90.82%, respectively. Moreover, it maintains a lightweight design and high efficiency with a model size of 4.75 MB and an inference time of 1.5 ms. Additionally, in the two types of maturity tests (M-u and M-r), APs of 87.70% and 93.94% are obtained, respectively, by the YOLO-RFEW model. Compared to YOLOv8n, significant improvements in detection accuracy have been achieved while reducing both model size and computational complexity using the proposed approach for muskmelon picking robots’ real-time detection requirements. Furthermore, when compared to lightweight models such as YOLOv3-Tiny, YOLOv4-Tiny, YOLOv5s, YOLOv7-Tiny, YOLOv8s, and YOLOv8n, the YOLO-RFEW model demonstrates superior performance with only 28.55%, 22.42%, 24.50%, 40.56%, 22.12%, and 79.83% of their respective model sizes, respectively, while achieving the highest F1 score and mAP values among these seven models. The feasibility and effectiveness of our improved scheme are verified through comparisons between thermograms generated by YOLOv8n and YOLO-RFEW as well as detection images. In summary, the YOLO-RFEW model not only improves the accuracy rate of muskmelon ripeness detection but also successfully realizes the lightweight and efficient performance, which has important theoretical support and application value in the field of muskmelon picking robot development.

In the foxtail millet field, due to the dense distribution of the foxtail millet ears, morphological differences among foxtail millet ears, severe shading of stems and leaves, and complex background, it is difficult to identify the foxtail millet ears. To solve these practical problems, this study proposes a lightweight foxtail millet ear detection method based on improved YOLOv5. The improved model proposes to use the GhostNet module to optimize the model structure of the original YOLOv5, which can reduce the model parameters and the amount of calculation. This study adopts an approach that incorporates the Coordinate Attention (CA) mechanism into the model structure and adjusts the loss function to the Efficient Intersection over Union (EIOU) loss function. Experimental results show that these methods can effectively improve the detection effect of occlusion and small-sized foxtail millet ears. The recall, precision, F1 score, and mean Average Precision (mAP) of the improved model were 97.70%, 93.80%, 95.81%, and 96.60%, respectively, the average detection time per image was 0.0181 s, and the model size was 8.12 MB. Comparing the improved model in this study with three lightweight object detection algorithms: YOLOv3_tiny, YOLOv5-Mobilenetv3small, and YOLOv5-Shufflenetv2, the improved model in this study shows better detection performance. It provides technical support to achieve rapid and accurate identification of multiple foxtail millet ear targets in complex environments in the field, which is important for improving foxtail millet ear yield and thus achieving intelligent detection of foxtail millet.

With the expansion of muskmelon cultivation, manual pollination is increasingly inadequate for sustaining industry development. Therefore, the development of automatic pollination robots holds significant importance in improving pollination efficiency and reducing labor dependency. Accurate flower detection and localization is a key technology for enabling automated pollination robots. In this study, the YOLO-MDL model was developed as an enhancement of YOLOv7 to achieve real-time detection and localization of muskmelon flowers. This approach adds a Coordinate Attention (CA) module to focus on relevant channel information and a Contextual Transformer (CoT) module to leverage contextual relationships among input tokens, enhancing the model’s visual representation. The pollination robot converts the 2D coordinates into 3D coordinates using a depth camera and conducts experiments on real-time detection and localization of muskmelon flowers in a greenhouse. The YOLO-MDL model was deployed in ROS to control a robotic arm for automatic pollination, verifying the accuracy of flower detection and measurement localization errors. The results indicate that the YOLO-MDL model enhances AP and F1 scores by 3.3% and 1.8%, respectively, compared to the original model. It achieves AP and F1 scores of 91.2% and 85.1%, demonstrating a clear advantage in accuracy over other models. In the localization experiments, smaller errors were revealed in all three directions. The RMSE values were 0.36 mm for the X-axis, 1.26 mm for the Y-axis, and 3.87 mm for the Z-axis. The YOLO-MDL model proposed in this study demonstrates strong performance in detecting and localizing muskmelon flowers. Based on this model, the robot can execute more precise automatic pollination and provide technical support for the future deployment of automatic pollination robots in muskmelon cultivation.

To solve the failure problem of the visible/near infrared (VIS/NIR) spectroscopy model, soluble solids content (SSC) detection for fresh jujubes cultivated in different modes was carried out based on the method of variable optimization and model update. Iteratively retained informative variables (IRIV) and successive projections algorithm (SPA) algorithms were used to extract characteristic wavelengths, and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) was used to establish detection models. Compared with IRIV, IRIV-SPA achieved better performance. Combined with the offset properties of the wavelength, repeated wavelengths were removed, and wavelength recombination was carried out to create a new combination of variables. Using these fused wavelengths, the model was recalibrated based on the Euclidean distance between samples. The LS-SVM detection model of SSC was established using the update method of wavelength fusion-Euclidean distance. Good prediction results were achieved using the proposed model. The determination coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and residual predictive deviation (RPD) of the test set on SSC of fresh jujubes cultivated in the open field were 0.82, 1.49%, and 2.18, respectively. The R2, RMSE, and RPD of the test set on SSC of fresh jujubes cultivated in the rain shelter were 0.81, 1.44%, and 2.17, respectively. This study realized the SSC detection of fresh jujubes with different cultivation and provided a method for the establishment of a robust VIS/NIR detection model for fruit quality, effectively addressing the industry need for identifying jujubes grown in the open field.

How to quickly and accurately judge the maturity of muskmelon is very important to consumers and muskmelon sorting staff. This paper presents a novel approach to solve the difficulty of muskmelon maturity stage classification in greenhouse and other complex environments. The color characteristics of muskmelon were used as the main feature of maturity discrimination. A modified 29-layer ResNet was applied with the proposed two-way data augmentation methods for the maturity stages of muskmelon classification using indoor and outdoor datasets to create a robust classification model that can generalize better. The results showed that code data augmentation which is the first way caused more performance degradation than input image augmentationthe second way. This established the effectiveness of the code data augmentation compared to image augmentation. Nevertheless, the two-way data augmentations including the combination of outdoor and indoor datasets to create a classification model revealed an excellent performance of F1 score 99, and hence the model is applicable to computer-based platform for quick muskmelon stages of maturity classification.
