The recent advancements in computer vision have opened new horizons for deploying biometric recognition algorithms in mobile and handheld devices. Similarly, iris recognition is now much needed in unconstraint scenarios with accuracy. These environments make the acquired iris image exhibit occlusion, low resolution, blur, unusual glint, ghost effect, and off-angles. The prevailing segmentation algorithms cannot cope with these constraints. In addition, owing to the unavailability of near-infrared (NIR) light, iris recognition in visible light environment makes the iris segmentation challenging with the noise of visible light. Deep learning with convolutional neural networks (CNN) has brought a considerable breakthrough in various applications. To address the iris segmentation issues in challenging situations by visible light and near-infrared light camera sensors, this paper proposes a densely connected fully convolutional network (IrisDenseNet), which can determine the true iris boundary even with inferior-quality images by using better information gradient flow between the dense blocks. In the experiments conducted, five datasets of visible light and NIR environments were used. For visible light environment, noisy iris challenge evaluation part-II (NICE-II selected from UBIRIS.v2 database) and mobile iris challenge evaluation (MICHE-I) datasets were used. For NIR environment, the institute of automation, Chinese academy of sciences (CASIA) v4.0 interval, CASIA v4.0 distance, and IIT Delhi v1.0 iris datasets were used. Experimental results showed the optimal segmentation of the proposed IrisDenseNet and its excellent performance over existing algorithms for all five datasets.

Existing iris recognition systems are heavily dependent on specific conditions, such as the distance of image acquisition and the stop-and-stare environment, which require significant user cooperation. In environments where user cooperation is not guaranteed, prevailing segmentation schemes of the iris region are confronted with many problems, such as heavy occlusion of eyelashes, invalid off-axis rotations, motion blurs, and non-regular reflections in the eye area. In addition, iris recognition based on visible light environment has been investigated to avoid the use of additional near-infrared (NIR) light camera and NIR illuminator, which increased the difficulty of segmenting the iris region accurately owing to the environmental noise of visible light. To address these issues; this study proposes a two-stage iris segmentation scheme based on convolutional neural network (CNN); which is capable of accurate iris segmentation in severely noisy environments of iris recognition by visible light camera sensor. In the experiment; the noisy iris challenge evaluation part-II (NICE-II) training database (selected from the UBIRIS.v2 database) and mobile iris challenge evaluation (MICHE) dataset were used. Experimental results showed that our method outperformed the existing segmentation methods.

Recent developments in intelligence surveillance camera systems have enabled more research on the detection, tracking, and recognition of humans. Such systems typically use visible light cameras and images, in which shadows make it difficult to detect and recognize the exact human area. Near-infrared (NIR) light cameras and thermal cameras are used to mitigate this problem. However, such instruments require a separate NIR illuminator, or are prohibitively expensive. Existing research on shadow detection in images captured by visible light cameras have utilized object and shadow color features for detection. Unfortunately, various environmental factors such as illumination change and brightness of background cause detection to be a difficult task. To overcome this problem, we propose a convolutional neural network-based shadow detection method. Experimental results with a database built from various outdoor surveillance camera environments, and from the context-aware vision using image-based active recognition (CAVIAR) open database, show that our method outperforms previous works.

Existing studies have shown that effective extraction of multi-scale information is a crucial factor directly related to the increase in performance of semantic segmentation. Accordingly, various methods for extracting multi-scale information have been developed. However, these methods face problems in that they require additional calculations and vast computing resources. To address these problems, this study proposes a grouped dilated convolution module that combines existing grouped convolutions and atrous spatial pyramid pooling techniques. The proposed method can learn multi-scale features more simply and effectively than existing methods. Because each convolution group has different dilations in the proposed model, they have receptive fields of different sizes and can learn features corresponding to these receptive fields. As a result, multi-scale context can be easily extracted. Moreover, optimal hyper-parameters are obtained from an in-depth analysis, and excellent segmentation performance is derived. To evaluate the proposed method, open databases of the Cambridge Driving Labeled Video Database (CamVid) and the Stanford Background Dataset (SBD) are utilized. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method shows a mean intersection over union of 73.15% based on the CamVid dataset and 72.81% based on the SBD, thereby exhibiting excellent performance compared to other state-of-the-art methods.

Semantic segmentation performs pixel-level classification of multiple classes in the input image. Previous studies on semantic segmentation have used various methods such as multi-scale image, encoder-decoder, attention, spatial pyramid pooling, conditional random field, and generative models. However, the contexts of various sizes and types in diverse environments make their performance limited in robustly detecting and classifying objects. To address this problem, we propose an enhanced semantic segmentation network (ESSN) robust to various objects, contexts, and environments. The ESSN can extract multi-scale information well by concatenating the residual feature maps with various receptive fields extracted from sequential convolution blocks, and it can improve the performance of semantic segmentation without additional modules such as loss or attention during the training process. We performed the experiments with two open databases, the Stanford background dataset (SBD) and Cambridge-driving labeled video database (CamVid). Experimental results demonstrated the pixel acc. of 92.74%, class acc. of 79.66%, and mIoU of 71.67% with CamVid, and pixel acc. of 87.46%, class acc. of 81.51%, and mIoU of 71.56% with SBD, which are higher than those of the existing state-of-the-art methods. In addition, the average processing time were 31.12 ms and 92.46 ms on the desktop computer and Jetson TX2 embedded system, respectively, which confirmed that ESSN is applicable to both the desktop computer and Jetson TX2 embedded system which is widely used in autonomous vehicles.
