Online platforms for matching supply and demand, as part of the sharing economy, are becoming increasingly important in practice and have seen a steep increase in academic interest. Especially in the taxi/travel industry, platforms such as Uber, Lyft, and Didi Chuxing have become major players. Some of these platforms, including Didi Chuxing, operate two matching systems: Inform, where multiple drivers receive ride details and the first to respond is selected; and Assign, where the platform assigns the driver nearest to the customer. The Inform system allows drivers to select their destinations, but the Assign system minimizes driver-customer distances. This research is the first to explore: (i) how a platform should allocate customer requests to the two systems and set the maximum matching radius (i.e., customer-driver distance), with the objective to minimize the overall average waiting times for customers; and (ii) how taxi drivers select a system, depending on their varying degrees of preference for certain destinations. Using approximate queuing analysis, we derive the optimal decisions for the platform and drivers. These are applied to real-world data from Didi Chuxing, revealing the following managerial insights. The optimal radius is 1-3 kilometers, and is lower during rush hour. For most considered settings, it is optimal to allocate relatively few rides to the Inform system. Most interestingly, if destination selection becomes more important to the average driver, then the platform should not always allocate more requests to the Inform system. Although this may seem counter-intuitive, allocating too many orders to that system would result in many drivers opting for it, leading to very high waiting times in the Assign system.

The current study constructed social network using player positions and passing process based on available literature. Multiple indicators were used to measure the importance of positions comprehensively. The results showed that in the football passing process, the attacking midfielder was the most important position, followed by the central defending midfielder. Based on two-sample difference tests, the results showed that the winning teams usually had better performance on positions of forward on left, central forward, defender on left and defender on right. To analyze the effects of playing positions on the whole network and test the sensitivity of passing networks, we deleted n (n = 1, 2, 3…, 10) positions of a team, and then tested the efficiency of the networks based on positions left.

Recent global environmental initiatives designed to achieve a more sustainable society include the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. While the shared economic model has long been linked to the creation of the sustainable use of resources, one problem encountered by the bike sharing is whether the current management model can maintain the focus on sustainability in China. Based on the amount of resources consumed during bike production, operation, and recycling, this paper aims to use life cycle carbon emission assessment to calculate an emission reduction threshold for bike-sharing industry. The research obtained energy consumption data from the OFO Curve bike, which is the most commonly used type of bike sharing in China. Calculating the average distance traveled and number of times each bike was used per day via the Baidu Map Application Program Interface, we found that the average number of times each bike was used per day was 4.552, and the average riding distance was 0.356 km. Additionally, the overall utilization of shared bikes averages about 50%. Further results show that the whole life cycle carbon footprint of one bike is 34.56 kg CO2. The power generation by incineration produces 1.9916 kg CO2 in less than a landfill. If a bike is deposited directly in a landfill, it will take 31 years to degrade. The final calculations show that based on the current number of bikes, each used at least 686 days to achieve a net positive reduction in emissions. This paper provides a basis for capacity management and operation management of shared bikes from the perspective of pro-environment and provides a new angle for the research on environmental impact of sharing economy.

In this study, several machine learning-based experimental methods are used to analyse firms’ research and development (R&D)-related activities and predict their technological innovation performance. Using unbalanced panel data from the CSMAR database for all listed firms in China from 2008 to 2018, we analyse the firms’ basic information, R&D investment, patent application and authorization activity, financial status, and human capital. We use a logistic regression model, decision tree model, three weak classifiers random forest model, XGBoost model, and two weak classifiers gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) model to integrate strong classifiers separately. A comparison of the results produced using the different models shows that the performance of the XGBoost model is better than that of the other models in terms of net profit, total sales revenue, and the number of invention patent applications as a proportion of the total number of patent applications. However, the performance of the GBDT model is significantly better than that of the other models in terms of the number of patent applications per 100,000 yuan of R&D expenditure. The results of this study can help scholars to accurately predict the innovation performance of firms and help business managers to make better decisions to improve the innovation performance of their firms in the current era of rapid technological change.

Measuring real-world fuel consumption of light duty vehicles can be challenging due to the limited collection of actual data. In this paper, we use big data retrieved from the record of real-world fuel consumptions of different brands of vehicles in different areas (n = 106,809 samples from 201 brands of vehicles and 34 cities) in China to build up a real-world fuel consumption rate (RFCR) model to estimate the fuel consumption given the driving conditions and figure out the main factors that affect actual fuel consumption in the real world. We find the average deviation of actual fuel consumptions and the fitting results of RFCR model is 4.22% , which does not significantly differ from zero, and the fuel consumptions calculated by RFCR model tend to be 1.40 L/100 km (about 25%) higher than the official reported data. Furthermore, we find that annual average temperature and altitude factors significantly influence the fuel consumption rate. The results indicate that there is a real world performance discrepancy between the theoretical fuel consumption released by authorities and that in the real world, and some green behaviors (choose light duty vehicles, reduce the use of air conditioning and change to manual transmission type) can reduce energy consumption of vehicles.

The development of the automobile maintenance industry less developed to satisfy the increasing demand for automobile maintenance service as the automobile manufacturing industry increased rapidly in China. This is not conducive to the sustainable development of the automobile industry. Besides the factors of market behavior that can affect the automobile industry structure, like an investment, operation structure or economic development stage, the structure is also influenced by government intervention. We investigated the unbalanced development of automobile structure from the perspective of government incentives, and provide a logical framework for analyzing the industrial policies on the automobile industry. We first established a two-sector theoretical model with government intervention, and we found that the governments’ GDP incentive induced the biased intervention policy. More preferential policies are given to enterprises of automobile manufacturing industries as they contribute more to intermediate goods and capital. The greater the government’s GDP incentive, the more biased the intervention will be. Then we test the differential impact of GDP incentive on tax avoidance of the two kinds of firms empirically. The empirical results show that GDP incentive of the government induced more preferential treatment to automobile manufacturing enterprises, and thus, increased their tax avoidance. This phenomenon is more significant in SOEs, larger firms and firms belong to local governments. Understanding the incentive and implementation of industrial policy can help us know the evolution of automobile industrial structure better, and then improve industrial policy better to promote the transformation and upgrading of automobile industrial structure.

The growth of vehicle ownership not only brings opportunity for the economy, but also brings environment and transport problems, which is not good for sustainable transportation. It is of great significance to build supporting infrastructure and other services based on accurate forecasts of vehicle ownership in various provinces because of the variance of economic development stages, the carrying capacity of resources, and different degrees of transport planning in each province. We used the Gompertz model in order to predict China’s provincial vehicle ownership from 2018 to 2050. Considering the impact of the population structure, we summed up the growth rate of GDP per labor, the growth rate of population and the growth rate of employment rate to get the growth rate of GDP and then the GDP per capita of each province. We found that the vehicle ownership in each province will grow rapidly in the next 30 years; however, the change in the ranking of vehicle ownership among provinces varies. The ranking of some provinces with high or middle ranking now will decline in the following years, especially Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Xinjiang. While the ranking of some provinces that locates in the middle and low ranking now will increase, such as Chongqing, Hubei, Anhui, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangxi. We also investigate the reasons that affect the trend in each province and we find that the suitable vehicle growth pattern of each province, the stage of economic development and government policy, which are related to the growth rate of GDP per labor, employment rate, and GDP per capita, can affect vehicle ownership in the future.

Public bikesharing is an environmentally friendly transportation mode that can remedy the urban “last mile” problem to some extents. Prior studies have investigated many predictors of the public bikesharing usage. For example, researchers find that gender, age, and physical conditions are significantly related to the public bikesharing usage. However, few studies have tested the characteristics of each ride and no integrative theoretical framework has been provided to explain these findings. In the current study, based on the conservation of resource theory, we suggest that the reason why these factors can predict public bikesharing usage is people’s inner needs of resource conservation. Based on this theoretical framework, we propose that: first, gender, age, and season will have direct impacts on public bikesharing usage (i.e., distance and user type); second, gender, age, and season will interactively predict public bikesharing usage as well. A relatively large sample with 1,383,773 rides in 2018 from New York City is used to test our hypotheses. The results indicate that old females indeed use public bicycle less intensively in the winter than young males do in other seasons and thus support the three-way interaction effect. Implications for the emerging public transport systems and limitations of this study are also discussed.

In order to eliminate the information asymmetry of supply and demand in transport service market, online car hailing platforms appear recent years. Almost all the transport service markets have the property of spatial differentiation, i.e, passengers' demand and vehicle supply are subject to different distributions in different regions at different time. Under the framework of two-sided market theory, this paper develops an intermediary pricing model for transport service market to evaluate the impact of spatial differentiation and network externality on online car hailing platform's pricing mechanism, based on the analysis of transport services' supply-demand matching. The analytic solution shows that the optimal price of the online car hailing platform is decided by the degree of heterogeneity in customer valuation on demand side and driver cost on supply side. Given optimal price on demand side, supply price in a region directly determines the supply of transport service in the same region, has cross effect on the supply in other region, and has indirect effect on demand price through the aggregate supply. Based on the trip record data of New York City, the simulation shows that online car hailing platform try to customize higher prices to attract more drivers and alleviate the passengers' demand pressure in morning rush hour. Furthermore, the simulation also shows that the disparity of the flow density in adjacent areas may affect the price adjustment mechanism of the online car hailing platform, and if the regional disparity further expands, the optimal choice of the platform is to increase the price of supply side, rather than the demand side.

The actual driving condition and fuel consumption rate gaps between lab and real-world are becoming larger. In this paper, we demonstrate an approach to determine the most important factors that may influence the prediction of real-world fuel consumption rate of light duty vehicles. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) method is developed for the prediction of fuel consumption since it provides accurate classification results despite the complicated properties of different types of inputs. The model considers the parameters of external environmental factors, the manipulation of vehicle companies and the drivers’ driving habits. Based on the BearOil database in China, 2,424,379 samples are used to optimize our model. We indicate that differences exist between real-world fuel consumption and standard fuel consumption under simulation conditions. This study enables the government and policy-makers to use big data and intelligent systems for energy policy assessment and better governance.

The rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) is conducive to clean transportation, which is an important aspect of sustainable infrastructure. However, the introduction of EVs is constrained by the lagging development of EV chargers. To optimally promote the development of charging stations, we analyzed the differences in the optimal quality and quantity of EV chargers between company-owned and franchised enterprises by constructing a theoretical model, and the changes in the quality and quantity of EV chargers in different market environments are discussed. We found that the total number of franchised charging stations was larger in general, but that the quality of the franchised charging stations was worse compared with the company-owned stations. The supervision cost, operation cost, and the investment return affect the quality and quantity of EV chargers. Although franchised structures are more conducive in the initial stage to increasing the number of charging stations to meet the needs of EVs, company-owned structures perform better and will be needed to improve the quality of the EV chargers as the market becomes more saturated, necessitating a higher quality of EV chargers.

This paper explores the determinants of the development of the new energy vehicles (NEVs) industry in China, which is important to the government in controlling the environmental pollution associated with the urbanization process. Urban governance policies have played an important role in promoting the sustainable development of cities. In this study, we investigate the dynamic effects of such policies and of financial support on the relationship between firm size and efficiency in the NEVs industry. These policies include subsidies from state and local governments during the production and promotion of NEVs. The sample includes an unbalanced panel data set of 148 firms closely related to the automobile industry in the Zhongguancun Science Park from 2005 to 2015. A data envelopment analysis model and a random effects model are used to test the hypotheses, and the results show that both government policies and financial support are beneficial in increasing the efficiency of large NEVs firms. However, small firms cannot benefit from these policies. To promote the technological progress of the NEVs industry, it is highly important to provide further government support for the small NEVs firms that play a leading role in the development of emerging technologies. Only in this way can the government create a healthy market environment for the future of NEVs industry, and reduce the pollution in urban areas.

In this study, an interpretable machine learning algorithm is proposed for the issues of intelligent decision through predicting the firms’ efficiency of innovation. Based on the unbalanced panel data collected in Zhongguancun Science Parks from year 2005 to 2015, the efficiency of over 10,000 firms have been analysed in this study, and the change and growth of these firms have been captured over time. The linear regression, decision tree, random forests, neural network and XGBoost models are applied to figure out the impact factors of innovation. After comparing the results of different models, it has been found that the accuracy of XGBoost for R&D efficiency labelled, commercial efficiency labelled and overall efficiency labelled classification problems are 73.65%, 70.02% and 70.09%, which outperform the other four models. Moreover, the interpretability of XGBoost is also better than other models. Thus, the XGBoost model makes it possible for managers to predict the firm's future innovation performance derived from their innovation strategies in the current stage. Furthermore, it helps firms to build an intelligent decision support system, which is of great importance for them to deal with complex decision environments, and to increase their efficiency of innovation in the long-term dynamic competition with other firms.

Air pollution is becoming a serious problem for China and it has attracted great attention in recent years. This paper examines the relationship between interprovincial trade patterns, economic development and impacts on air quality. Using detailed data from 2004 to 2016 on interprovincial railway freight in China, the inverted u-shaped environmental Kuznets curve and the pollution haven hypothesis are assessed. The impact of interprovincial trade on the emissions of sulfur dioxide are estimated on the basis of controlling the industrial structure, regional foreign direct investment and motor vehicles retained. Evidence of pollution transfers is found, and such effects appear to be stronger between adjacent regions rather than nonadjacent regions, regardless of the roles of other explanatory variables. Our conclusions and policy implications will assist government decision-making regarding resource reallocation and sustainable development of green cities.

This paper studies how vehicle market is segmented among consumers and what impacts subsidy policy may have on segmentation. With constant elasticity of substitution utility function and unit demand, we find positive market share for both high-end and low-end vehicles, but not necessary for middle-end vehicles. Market segmentation may have two regimes according to different levels of subsidy on electric vehicles (EVs), and only a sufficiently high subsidy allows for the existence of low type EV market share welcomed by median income consumers. An EV subsidy cut will definitely crowd out the market share of high type EV and expand that of internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV). And given in a regime where low type EVs survive, EV subsidy cut’s influence on low type EV market share is ambiguous, which depends on the relative consumer density around decision cutoff points.

The natural monopoly of China’s upstream industry and the vertical structure of industrial chain’s upstream and downstream competition is an important feature of China’s industrial economic structure, and the impact of the change of trade pattern on the energy industry, which located at the upstream of the China’s value chain, has become an important issue in the industrial economy. Since China has entered into the WTO in 2001, we use it for event analysis based on 1987-2007 China input-output data. The study calculates the upstreamness of production of the value chain in various industrial sectors of China’s energy industry every five years, and make correlation analysis of upstreamness of production and other economic indicators to check the characteristics of periodic inspection of China’s industrial structure with the development of industrial economy and the change of trade pattern.

Emerging online car hailing services have caused many unintended consequences in urban centers such as more congested traffic and increased vehicle travels. Those unintended consequences have significant impact on urban sustainability due to the increased fuel use and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. An evaluation model of online car hailing services was established to evaluate impact on energy use and CO2 in China. We found online car hailing services have taken over not only private vehicle travels but also travels fulfilled by other modes such as mass public transit, walking, and bicycling. Empirical case analysis combined with real data shows the operating mechanism, quantitative research method and different future scenario analysis results of the model we developed. Our findings suggest that policies should be developed to prevent online car hailing from attracting too many public transit riders and to improve the efficiency of private vehicle travels. As online car hailing is emerging in many cities around the world, lessons learned from China will be useful to inform the development of policies to avoid unintended consequences.

Given its serious impacts on the public’s health, air pollution in China is a matter of strong public concern, particularly in reference to malodorous waste gas. Petition letters related to atmospheric pollution accounted for about 40% of the total petition cases. However, scholarly views differ on whether the Chinese government responds to public opinion on the environment and seeks to improve its environmental governance behavior. For this study, data from national surveys on the public’s environmental satisfaction administered during the period 2011–2015 were analyzed to determine whether the public’s dissatisfaction with the state of the environment in a given year resulted in increased investments by provincial governments in pollution governance during the following year. The study’s findings revealed that governmental behavior in response to public opinion on the environment was selective within the field of environmental governance, with provincial governments being inclined to invest more in waste gas pollution control than in water pollution control. Furthermore, results from this study show that the Chinese government tends to put more efforts into the environmental field where it could more easily achieve short-term benefits.

Since the China State Grid opened the market for infrastructure construction of electric charging stations and allowed Tesla, Potevio, BAIC BJEV and other enterprises to provide their own charging stations and other infrastructure construction, the development of electric vehicles has been greatly affected. How to maintain a sustainable governance in the opened electric vehicle charging and upgraded facilities market is an important policy issues. This paper presents a monopolistic competition model for the differentiated products market and addresses several issues related to Cournot equilibrium to illustrate why the expected free market actually operates in a monopolistic competition market structure. The analytic solution of the model shows that whether the extent of firm entry is insufficient, excessive or optimum is determined by consumers’ time preference, level of production differentiation and features of cost structure, including fixed cost and marginal cost. The sensitivity analysis has been performed among the above factors and tracked some other factors which would determine the effect of the new policy issues. The main policy suggestion is that the government should optimize entry regulations and lay down the criterion of charging interface standards for charging stations to avoid the electric vehicle charging and upgraded facilities marketization process of a one-size-fits-all solution and form a monopolistic competition market.
