Developing small‐scale soft continuum robots with large‐angle steering capacity and high‐precision manipulation offers broad opportunities in various biomedical settings. However, existing continuum robots reach the bottleneck in actuation on account of the contradiction among small size, compliance actuation, large tender range, high precision, and small dynamic error. Herein, a 3D‐printed millimeter‐scale soft continuum robot with an ultrathin hollow skeleton wall (300 μm) and a large inner‐to‐outer ratio (0.8) is reported. After coating a thin ferromagnetic elastomer layer (≈100–150 μm), the proposed soft continuum robot equipped with hybrid actuation (tendon‐ and magnetic‐driven mode) achieves large‐angle (up to 100°) steering and high‐precision (low to 2 μm for static positioning) micromanipulation simultaneously. Specifically, the robot implements an ultralow dynamic tracking error of ≈10 μm, which is ≈30‐fold improved than the state of art. Combined with a microneedle/knife or nasopharyngeal swab, the robot reveals the potential for versatile biomedical applications, such as drug injection on the target tissue, diseased tissue ablation, and COVID‐19 nasopharyngeal sampling. The proposed millimeter‐scale soft continuum robot presents remarkable advances in large‐range and high‐precise actuation, which provides a new method for miniature continuum robot design and finds broad applications in biomedical engineering.
Bionic robot inspired by creatures in nature attracts attention from researchers due to its effective locomotion mode and high environment adaptability. Despite the recent achievements in bionic research and robotics, the bionic robots are almost simple morphology imitation. While the imitation of functional texture and microstructures are also important, which always makes a significant difference to the performance of robot. In this work, we proposed a starfish inspired milli soft robot with excellent locomotive performance and great environmental adaptability. Different from the simple imitation of locomotion mode in the previous literature, we introduce the micro tube feet structures of starfish into the robot design. The magnetization measurement and friction test result indicate that the microstructures of tube feet can strengthen the driving performance of robot, reduce the motion resistance from ground, and enhance the obstacle-climbing ability. Benefit from the radial symmetry shape of the starfish, the milli soft robot can achieve omnidirectional movement under the actuation of magnetic field. Moreover, the large deflection modeling of the variable cross section antenna is built by analyzing the infinitesimal element, and two motion states of milli soft robot are compared. The successful locomotion demonstrations, including moving with “S” trajectory, adapting to wet surface and gravel surface, overcoming obstacles, indicate the potential application of the starfish inspired milli soft robot in harsh environment.
Modular robot that can reconfigure architectures and functions has advantages in unpredicted environment and task. However, the construction of modular robot at small-scale remains a challenge since the lack of reliable docking and detaching strategies. Here we report the concept of milli-scale cellular robot (mCEBOT) achieved by the heterogeneous assembly of two types of units (short and long units). Under the magnetic field, the proposed mCEBOT units can not only selectively assemble (e.g., end-by-end and side-by-side) into diverse morphologies corresponding to the unstructured environments, but also configure multi-modes motion behaviors (e.g., slipping, rolling, walking and climbing) based on the on-site task requirements. We demonstrate its adaptive mobility from narrow space to high barrier to wetting surface, and its potential applications in hanging target taking and environment exploration. The concept of mCEBOT offers new opportunities for robot design, and will broaden the field of modular robot in both miniaturization and functionalization.

The functionalization of microrobots is essential for realizing their biomedical application in targeted cargo delivery, but the multifunctional integration of microrobots and controllable cargo delivery remains an enormous challenge at present. This work reports a kind of multi-functionalized micro-helical robot with superior loading capabilities for the controlled release of encapsulants. The magnetic microrobot, with a multilayer capsule helical structure, was developed via multifunctional strategies, including microfluidic synthesis, polyelectrolyte complexation, and surface coating with magnetic nanoparticles. The microrobot is constructed of a helical structure from a calcium alginate microfiber via a co-axial capillary microfluidic system. Then, it is coated with a polyelectrolyte complexation membrane and decorated with magnetic nanoparticles. After multi-step layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly with functionalized units, the structure is converted to a helical capsule possessing a soft and biocompatible polysaccharide alginate/chitosan/alginate shell with Fe3O4 nanoparticles decorated on the surface. The functionalized microrobot not only enables wireless steering with rotational locomotion under the control of a six degrees of freedoms (6-DOFs) electromagnetic system at different frequencies, but it also possesses stimuli-responsive abilities owing to the semi-permeable membrane, which can trigger the controllable release of encapsulants in response to ions in the environment. This work provides an efficient strategy for the superior multi-functionalization of microrobots to achieve enhanced locomotion and encapsulation performance for the loading, transport, and targeted delivery of cargo.
