Double Fano resonant characteristics are investigated in planar plasmonic structure by embedding a metallic nanorod in symmetric U-shaped split ring resonators, which are caused by a strong interplay between a broad bright mode and narrow dark modes. The bright mode is resulted from the nanorod electric dipole resonance while the dark modes originate from the magnetic dipole induced by LC resonances. The overlapped dual Fano resonances can be decomposed to two separate ones by adjusting the coupling length between the nanorod and U-shaped split ring resonators. Fano resonances in the designed structure exhibit high refractive-index sensing sensitivity and figure of merit, which have potential applications in single or double-wavelength sensing in the near-infrared region.

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) of materials is an intriguing phenomenon challenging the concept of traditional lattice dynamics and of importance for a variety of applications. Progresses in this field develop markedly and update continuously our knowledge on the NTE behavior of materials. In this article, we review the most recent understandings on the underlying mechanisms (anharmonic phonon vibration, magnetovolume effect, ferroelectrorestriction and charge transfer) of thermal shrinkage and the development of NTE materials under each mechanism from both the theoretical and experimental aspects. Besides the low frequency optical phonons which are usually accepted as the origins of NTE in framework structures, NTE driven by acoustic phonons and the interplay between anisotropic elasticity and phonons are stressed. Based on the data documented, some problems affecting applications of NTE materials are discussed and strategies for discovering and design novel framework structured NET materials are also presented.

Unlike the Rydberg blockade regime, the Rydberg antiblockade regime (RABR) allows more than one Rydberg atom to be excited, which can bring other interesting phenomena and applications. We propose an alternative scheme to quickly achieve the RABR. The proposed RABR can be implemented by adjusting the detuning of the classical driving field, which is, in turn, based on the former numbers of the excited Rydberg atoms. In contrast to the former schemes, the current one enables more than two atoms to be excited to Rydberg states in a short period of time and thus is useful for large-scale quantum information processing. The proposed RABR can be used to construct two- and multiqubit quantum logic gates. In addition, a Rydberg excitation superatom, which can decrease the blockade error and enlarge the blockade radius for Rydberg blockade-based schemes, is constructed based on the suggested RABR and used to realize a more robust quantum logic gate. The mechanical effect and the ionization are discussed, and the performance is investigated using the master-equation method. Finally, other possible applications of the present RABR are also given.

Wearable electronics guide the next generation of traditional personal electronics. However, their conventional batteries are required to be frequently charged or replaced, greatly limiting the development of wearable electronics. Thus, a wearable power source that can in situ harvest biomechanical energy to continuously power wearable electronics is extremely desirable. In this work, we report for the first time a washable textile-structured single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (TS-TENG) based on a nanofibrous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer with high hydrophobicity. A stained TS-TENG can be easily and quickly cleaned by washing in water. The TS-TENG can be sewed on clothes, and then it can effectively convert mechanical energy to electricity by the friction with the material of clothes. When operated by swinging arms while people are walking or running, the output voltage and current of the TS-TENG obtained were 1050 V and 22 μA, respectively. This generated electric energy could directly power a night running light and a digital watch without any energy storage process. The development of this TS-TENG could provide great opportunities for developing self-powered wearable electronics due to its flexibility, breathability, washability, and capability to harvest biomechanical energy from human motions.

A broad-band perfect absorber composing a two-dimensional periodic metal-dielectric-metal sandwiches array on dielectric/metal substrate is designed and numerically investigated. It is shown that the nearly-perfect absorption with a bandwidth of about 50 nm in visible region can be achieved by overlapping of two plasmon resonances: one originating from the coupling of electric dipoles between adjacent unit cells and another arising from magnetic dipole plasmon resonances. A capacitor-inductor circuit description is introduced to explain the dependence of resonance frequencies and band-width on geometrical parameters.

A novel planar plasmonic metamaterial for electromagnetically induced transparency and slow light characteristic is presented in this paper, which consists of nanoring and nanorod compound structures. Two bright modes in the metamaterial are induced by the electric dipole resonance inside nanoring and nanorod, respectively. The coupling between two bright modes introduces transparency window and large group index. By adjusting the geometric parameters of metamaterial structure, the transmittance of EIT window at 385 THz is about 60%, and the corresponding group index and Q factor can reach up to 1.2 × 103 and 97, respectively, which has an important application in slow-light device, active plasmonic switch, SERS and optical sensing.
