In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, accurate direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is important for the base station (BS) to perform effective downlink beamforming. So far, there have been few reports on DOA estimation considering gain-phase perturbations in massive MIMO systems. However, gain-phase perturbations indeed exist in practical applications and cannot be ignored. In this paper, an efficient method for two-dimensional (2-D) DOA estimation of incoherently distributed (ID) sources considering array gain-phase perturbations is proposed for massive MIMO systems. Firstly, a shift invariance structure is established in the subspace framework, and a constrained optimization problem is formulated to estimate the nominal azimuth and elevation DOAs as well as gain-phase perturbations with closed-form expressions, under the assumption that some of the BS antennas are well calibrated; secondly, the corresponding angular spreads are obtained with the aid of the estimated gain-phase perturbations. Theoretical analysis and an approximate Cramér-Rao bound are also provided. An improved estimation performance is achieved by the proposed method as demonstrated by numerical simulations.

In this article, a novel vehicle positioning system architecture based on direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of incoherently distributed (ID) sources is proposed employing massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) arrays. Such an architecture with the associated signal model is more consistent with the actual array application and multipath transmission scenarios. First, an end-to-end two-dimensional (2-D) DOA estimation of ID sources utilizing a dual one-dimensional (1-D) convolutional neural network (D1D-CNN) under the deep learning (DL) framework is performed, where the normalized covariance matrix data is used for both offline training and online estimation. Then, the received SNR information is exploited to select a set of DOA estimates provided by multiple collaborative BSs for positioning. Moreover, transfer learning and an attention mechanism are employed to promote its generalization ability and achieve robustness against array perturbations. Simulation results are provided to show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of computational complexity, positioning accuracy, and robustness against array perturbations.

A three-dimensional (3-D) near-field (NF) source localization method is introduced for a bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar system equipped with arbitrary electromagnetic vector sensors (EMVSs) at both the transmitter and receiver. Firstly, to obtain estimates of the steering matrices of the transmitting array and the receiving array, tensor decomposition is performed on the covariance matrix of the outputs. Then, multiple parameters of targets, including two-dimensional direction-of-departure (2D-DOD), range from transmitter to target (RFTT), along with two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (2D-DOA), range from target to receiver (RFTR), and two-dimensional receive polarization angle (2D-RPA) with respect to receiver can be obtained by exploiting the property of rotation invariance. Subsequently, a linear equation can be constructed to determine all location parameters of NF targets. The proposed method can provide automatically paired multi-parameters without peak search and has low computational complexity. Moreover, the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) is derived as a performance benchmark for the model under consideration, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by a series of numerical simulations.

Most existing near-field (NF) source localization algorithms are developed based on the Fresnel approximation model, and assume that the spatial amplitudes of the target at the sensors are equal. Unlike these algorithms, an NF source parameter estimation algorithm is proposed, based on the exact spatial propagation geometry model, for bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar deployed with a linear concentered orthogonal loop and dipole (COLD) array at both the transmitter and receiver. The proposed method first compresses the output signal of the matched filter at the receiver into a third-order parallel factor (PARAFAC) data model, on which a trilinear decomposition is performed, and subsequently three factor matrices can be obtained. Then, multiple parameters of interest, including direction-of-departure (DOD), direction-of-arrival (DOA), range from transmitter to target (RFTT), range from target to receiver (RFTR), two-dimensional (2-D) transmit polarization angle (TPA) and 2-D receive polarization angle (RPA), are estimated from the spatial amplitude ratio exploiting the rotation invariant property and the Khatri-Rao product. Finally, the phase uncertainties of transmit and receive arrays can be extracted from additional phase items. The proposed algorithm avoids spectrum peak search, and the estimated parameters in closed forms can be automatically matched unambiguously. In addition, it is suitable for non-uniform linear arrays (NLA) with arbitrary array element spacing and phase uncertainty. Advantages of the proposed method are demonstrated by simulation results.

Most existing antenna array-based source localization methods rely on fixed-position arrays (FPAs) and strict assumptions about source field conditions (near-field or far-field), which limits their effectiveness in complex, dynamic real-world scenarios where high-precision localization is required. In contrast, this paper introduces a novel scalable fluid antenna system (SFAS) that can dynamically adjust its aperture configuration to optimize performance for different localization tasks. Within this framework, we develop a two-stage source localization strategy based on the exact spatial geometry (ESG) model: the first stage uses a compact aperture configuration for initial direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, while the second stage employs an expanded aperture for enhanced DOA and range estimation. The proposed approach eliminates the traditional need for signal separation or isolation to classify source types and enables a single SFAS array to achieve high localization accuracy without field-specific assumptions, model simplifications, or approximations, representing a new paradigm in array-based source localization. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in terms of localization accuracy, computational efficiency, and robustness to different source types.

A near-field source localization method is proposed for 2-D direction-of-arrival (DOA) and range estimation based on a symmetrical cross array. It first employs the conjugate symmetry property of signal autocorrelation for different time delays to construct a conjugate augmented spatial–temporal cross-correlation matrix, then the extended steering vector is decoupled to avoid the usual multidimensional search based on the properties of the Khatri–Rao product, and finally three 1-D MUSIC-type searches are employed to obtain the results. The proposed method can realize automatic pairing of multiple parameters associated with each source and it also works in the underdetermined case. Furthermore, the stochastic Cramer–Rao lower bound with different time delays is derived. Compared with two existing methods, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method provides satisfactory estimation performance for both the DOA and range parameters at low signal-to-noise ratio and with a small number of snapshots.
