Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system offers a promising way for high data rate communication over bandwidth-limited underwater acoustic channels. However, MIMO communication not only suffers from intersymbol interference, but also introduces the additional co-channel interference, which brings challenge for underwater acoustic MIMO channel estimation and for channel equalization. In this article, we propose novel interference cancellation (IC) methods for handling this co-channel interference problem in the design of both channel estimation and channel equalization. Our method for channel estimation utilizes the spatial joint sparsity and the temporal joint sparsity in the multipath structure to estimate sparse channels with common delays under distributed compressed sensing framework. In this way, we enhance channel estimates with common delays, thus, suppress co-channel interference. Meanwhile, to address the case of multipath arrivals with different delays, which are estimated as noise under simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (SOMP) algorithm, we introduce forward-reverse strategy to SOMP algorithm, which is referred to as the FRSOMP algorithm. Our proposed FRSOMP algorithm performs the SOMP algorithm to achieve the initial channel estimates, performs the forward-add process, which attempts to add promising candidates into support sets, and performs the reverse-fetch process to check if the candidates in the support set are retained or removed. The purpose of channel estimation is to directly calculate the filter coefficients for channel-estimation-based decision feedback equalization (CE-DFE). In this article, we also propose a novel CE-DFE receiver with IC component. We design IC filters based on the traditional CE-DFE, and we derive the coefficients of the feedforward filters, feedback filters, and IC filters based on the channel estimate metric obtained by the FRSOMP algorithm, so the co-channel interference will be suppressed both in channel estimation and channel equalization. We demonstrate the performance of our approach by numerical simulation, lake experiment, and sea experiment. Results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, which show that the proposed methods obtain higher output signal-to-noise ratio, lower bit error rate, and more separated constellations compared with the traditional compressed sensing channel estimation method and the traditional CE-DFE method.

While it has been recognized that the multipath structure of the underwater acoustic (UWA) channel offers the potential for compressed sensing (CS) sparsity exploitation, the rapidly time varying arrivals induced by highly dynamic surfaces unfortunately pose significant difficulties to channel estimation. From the viewpoint of underwater acoustic propagation, with the exception of the highly time varying arrivals caused by dynamic surface, generally there exist relatively stationary or slowly changing arrivals caused by direct path or bottom reflection, which imply the adoption of a discriminate estimation method to handle sparse components with different time variation scale. By modeling the time varying UWA channels as a sparse set consisting of constant and time-varying supports, in this paper, estimation of time varying UWA channel is transformed into a problem of dynamic compressed sensing sparse recovery. The combination of a Kalman filter and compressed sensing is adopted to pursue the solution of it. Numerical simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm. In the form of a channel-estimation-based decision-feedback equalizer, the experimental results with the field data obtained in a shallow water acoustic communication experiment indicate that the proposed dynamic compressed sensing algorithm outperforms classic algorithms as well as CS algorithms.

A high frequency acoustic experiment was conducted in the northern portion of the Gulf of Mexico in August 2016 to examine the operating range, data rates, and performance of acoustic communication systems at the carrier frequency of 85 kHz. The received signal-to-noise ratios, channel coherence, and impulse responses were reported between two 85 kHz transducers and a five-element hydrophone array over multiple ranges up to 1500 m. Channel estimation based decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) were applied to process the communication measurements. A data rate of 27.2 kb/s was achieved for four tested ranges with a uniform set of receiver parameters.

While underwater acoustic (UWA) communication offers a practical way to establish a wireless link with underwater vehicles, designing a UWA communication system onboard a small autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) still poses significant challenges. As the adoption of the low-complexity, robust noncoherent communication technology is limited by low bandwidth efficiency and a low data rate, coherent UWA communication requires Doppler mitigation and channel equalization measures to achieve a relatively high data rate in a moving state. Due to the strict constraints of a small-scale AUV in terms of resources and energy consumption, it is not appropriate to use high-complexity Doppler/multipath compensation technology from the prospect of system implementation. In this paper, an efficient and low-complexity UWA differential binary phase-shift keying (DBPSK) system onboard a small AUV is proposed by simplifying the Doppler and multipath compensation. Specifically, for Doppler, the delay of the adjacent DBPSK symbols is calculated according to the Doppler estimate to facilitate delay-tuning Doppler correction. For multipath, low-complexity LMS channel equalization is incorporated with error correction coding to enable multipath mitigation. With a simple structure and low computational complexity, the proposed scheme facilitates the practical hardware implementation and system integration in the small AUV platform. The numerical simulations are conducted to assess the validity of the proposed scheme under different channel conditions and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is further verified by two UWA communication field tests, which are performed at a practical shallow water sea and lake, respectively.

Distributed compressed sensing techniques are applied to enhance sparse channel estimation performance in underwater acoustic multiband systems. The core idea is to use receptions from multiple sub-bands to enhance the detection of channel tap positions. A known variant of the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm based on the distributed compressed sensing principle is simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (SOMP). However, the impulse responses across multiple sub-bands may have different arrival structures, although they often show a certain level of similarity. To address such differences at the sub-bands, a multiple selection strategy is applied to select multiple candidates at individual sub-bands at each iteration. This is different from the conventional OMP and SOMP algorithms that select only one candidate at each iteration. When the multiple selection strategy is combined with the SOMP algorithm, the proposed algorithm is referred to as JB-MSSOMP algorithm. To take advantage of channel coherence between adjacent data blocks from different sub-bands, the multiple selection strategy is further used over time. This leads to JBT-MSSOMP algorithm. Computer simulations show improved channel estimation performance of the proposed JB-MSSOMP and JBT-MSSOMP algorithms over the OMP or SOMP algorithms. Communication data from a recent acoustic experiment demonstrates improved receiver performance with the proposed channel estimators.
