Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have become an attractive way to produce green energy via their integration into buildings as photovoltaic windows. Recently, carbon quantum dots (C-QDs) have become the most studied luminescent material for the manufacture of luminescent solar concentrators due to their advantages, such as low toxicity, sustainability, and low cost. Despite the advantages of carbon quantum dots, they remain a low-efficiency material, and it is difficult to fabricate LSCs with a good performance. To address this problem, some of the research has used SiO2 nanoparticles (Nps) to produce a light-scattering effect that helps to improve the system performance. However, these studies are limited and have not been discussed in detail. In this regard, this research work was designed to evaluate the contribution of the scattering effect in different systems of carbon quantum dots used in a possible luminescent solar concentrator. To carry out this study, C-QDs and SiO2 Nps were synthesized by hydrothermal methods and the Stober method, respectively. We used different concentrations of both materials to fabricate film LSCs (10 × 10 cm2). The results show that the light scattered by the SiO2 Nps has a double contribution, in terms of light redirected towards the edges of the window and as a secondary source of excitation for the C-QDs; thus, an improvement in the performance of the LSC is achieved. The best improvement in photoluminescence is achieved when the films are composed of 20% wt carbon quantum dots and 10% wt SiO2 Nps, reaching a gain of 16% of the intensity of the light incident on the edges of the window with respect to the LSCs where only C-QDs were used.

In this study, a novel chitosan–resole–pectin aerogel (CS–R–P) was created from a sol–gel reaction with a solution of Cs and P with resole by a freeze-drying technique, and this adsorbent was proposed for the removal of methylene blue (MB). In addition, with the use of an artificial intelligence technique known as an artificial neural network (ANN), this material was modeled and optimized. Its physical morphology and chemical composition were also characterized with FTIR and XPS, and its adsorption properties were analyzed. For modeling the adsorption process, three main parameters were used: the chitosan–resole–pectin concentration (45–75%), thermal treatment (6–36 h), and known concentrations of methylene blue (25–50 and 100 mg/L), established on the Box–Behnken design. The ANN was coupled with the improved gray wolf optimization (IWGO) metaheuristic algorithm, achieving a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.99. The characterization indicates that the surface of the aerogels was micro- and mesoporous, the resole gave physical stability, and the polysaccharide base delivered the functional groups necessary for dye adsorption; the aerogels were successful dye adsorbents with a qe of 12.44 mg/g. Finally, the physical and chemical sorption was ascertainable with an adsorption that followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The MB adsorption was clearly occurring though cation exchange and hydrogen binding as observed in the chemical composition. The ANN with the gray wolf optimizer was used for the prediction of the best operating parameters for MB removal, applying the following conditions—the CS–R–P aerogel concentration (52/30/18), the thermal treatment (9.12 h), and the initial concentration of methylene blue (37 mg/L)—achieving a 94.6% removal. These conclusions suggest that using artificial intelligence such as an ANN can provide an efficient and practical model for maximizing the removal action of new aerogels based on chitosan.

This study investigates how physical and mechanical properties affect the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Polyurethane (PU) was prepared using two methods: (i) one-step PU (non-chain extended polyurethane) and (ii) two-step PU (chain extended polyurethane) via the prepolymer method; both types were filled with different concentrations of nanocrystalline cellulose. Mechanical properties significantly influence the deformation at the material interface that occurs during contact or friction. Key surface characteristics, including surface energy, geometry, and physicochemical properties, affect the effective contact area and potential distribution. One-step PU with 0.1 % CNC demonstrates a maximum capacitance of 29.20 pF, a voltage of 2.04 V, an electric current of 0.43 µA and power of 0.89 µW, representing a 74.5 % increase in power compared to the neat one-step PU, exhibits significant potential for TENG applications. Performance improvements are associated with lower concentrations of cellulose nanocrystals, enhanced hydrogen bonding, and beneficial surface energy. The observed enhancements in output are attributed to improved internal polarization from well-dispersed crystalline nanocellulose, increased crystallinity of the soft segment, and reduced charge transfer mechanisms due to amino groups in the chain extender. However, the impact of the molecular structure and conformation of polyurethanes on triboelectrification remains unclear, highlighting the need for theoretical models and experimental data. This research provides a practical approach for developing stretchable triboelectric materials with enhanced mechanical properties, emphasizing the importance of considering factors such as mechanical parameters, nanofiller content, and surface physicochemical properties to optimize TENG design.

In this study, electrically conductive cornstarch-based films are developed by incorporating carbonized polymer dots (CPDs), and their charge-transfer capability is evaluated through their electrical characterization and their validation as electrodes in a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). The incorporation of controlled amounts of CPDs promoted the formation of conductive pathways within the cornstarch matrix, improved charge transport, and reduced electrical resistance, with a maximum conductivity of 196.602 µΩ−1 cm−1 obtained for the optimized composition. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that this behavior arises from interfacial interactions between the hydroxyl-rich cornstarch chains and functionalized nitrogen-containing CPDs, which facilitate charge transfer within the polymer matrix. An optimal CPD quantity provides a balance between conductive carbon domains and polar surface functionalities, maximizing charge mobility without inducing aggregation. The improved electrical response of the optimized composite film was further validated by implementing it as an electrode in a triboelectric nanogenerator, which exhibited a current of 2.087 µA, corresponding to an approximately 334-fold enhancement compared to a reference device based on pristine cornstarch. These results firstly demonstrate that CPDs provide an effective route for modulating electrical charge transfer in cornstarch-based films and secondly highlight the potential of sustainable polymer composites as low-cost conductive materials for flexible electronics, biodegradable electrodes, and energy-related applications.
