Presents a recurrent neural network for solving the Sylvester equation with time-varying coefficient matrices. The recurrent neural network with implicit dynamics is deliberately developed in the way that its trajectory is guaranteed to converge exponentially to the time-varying solution of a given Sylvester equation. Theoretical results of convergence and sensitivity analysis are presented to show the desirable properties of the recurrent neural network. Simulation results of time-varying matrix inversion and online nonlinear output regulation via pole assignment for the ball and beam system and the inverted pendulum on a cart system are also included to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed neural network.

A recurrent neural network, called the Lagrangian network, is presented for the kinematic control of redundant robot manipulators. The optimal redundancy resolution is determined by the Lagrangian network through real-time solution to the inverse kinematics problem formulated as a quadratic optimization problem. While the signal for a desired velocity of the end-effector is fed into the inputs of the Lagrangian network, it generates the joint velocity vector of the manipulator in its outputs along with the associated Lagrange multipliers. The proposed Lagrangian network is shown to be capable of asymptotic tracking for the motion control of kinematically redundant manipulators.

A novel transmission scheme called zero‐pseudorandom noise training sequence orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ZPN‐OFDM) is proposed, where the frame structure of dual‐pseudorandom noise (PN) padding time domain synchronous OFDM is modified by replacing the first PN sequence by a zero sequence. The new ZPN‐OFDM system offers better energy efficiency than previous OFDM systems. The ZPN‐OFDM system is tested for significant tap delay multipath channels. Simulation results show that ZPN‐OFDM can provide significant bit error rate improvement as well as energy efficiency improvement.

This paper considers the feasibility of using augmented reality (AR) as a tool for enhancing visualization in maritime operations to avoid collision in different environmental conditions. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO 2010), 90% of maritime accidents due to collisions at sea are caused in part by human error. This study investigates the new technology (AR) used to superimpose holographic images onto the real world; now reaching a state of readiness for commercial application. This paper demonstrates the competence of AR technology to serve as a maritime navigational aid. The research explores the viability of improving navigational safety in low visibility by projecting holograms of real-world objects in the same geo-location as the real object to make them “visible”. The paper presents the logical deconstruction of the technical problems and identified solutions, together with results of experiments used to validate the concept and technology readiness for real word maritime application. The paper presents a verified demonstrator; a proposed holographic bridge interface with an innovative way of presenting information using AR technology. Furthermore, it identifies that new technologies offer the opportunity for enhanced operator performances, with the expectation being that this should lead to reduce risk to persons, property, and the environment.

Acoustic emission (AE) and vibration signal are significant criteria of damage identification in structural health monitoring (SHM) engineering. Multi-disciplinary knowledge and synergistic parameter effects are technical challenges for damage assessment modelling. This study proposes a structural damage cause-and-effect analysis method based on parameter information entropy. Monitoring data is used to form a time-domain feature wave (TFW). The structural strength degradation factor (DF) would be used to define structural damage information entropy (SDIE) vector. The structural damage cause and effect model is developed in a probability sense. A fatigue index is adopted for damage assessment, and a causal strength index is proposed to locate the most likely damage cause. A sandstone-truss structure experiment was conducted to show that the proposed method is effective for damage evaluation and the experimental results provide strong support. This is a statistical damage identification method based on causal logic uncertainty, meaning a complicated mechanics calculation can be avoided.
