Mobile Edge Computing(MEC) is a new computing approach in which computation tasks carried by Mobile Devices (MD) can be offloaded to MEC servers or computed locally. Since the mobile devices are always battery limited and computation tasks have strict deadlines, how to schedule the execution of each task energy effectively is important. Comparing with existing works, we consider a much more complexed scenario, in which multiple moving mobile devices sharing multiple heterogeneous MEC servers, and a problem named as Minimum Energy Consumption problem in Deadline-aware MEC system is formulated. Such problem is proved to be NP-Hard, and two approximation algorithms are proposed focusing on single and multiple MD scenarios, respectively. The performances of these algorithms are varied by theoretical analysis and simulations.

The massive amount of data generated by the Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices places enormous pressure on sensory data query processing. Due to the limitations of computation and data transmission capabilities in traditional wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the current query processing methods are no longer effective. Furthermore, processing vast amount of sensory data also overloads the cloud. To address these problems, we investigate query processing in an edge-assisted IoT data monitoring system (EDMS). Multiaccess edge computing (MEC) is an emerging topic in IoTs. Unlike WSNs, the edge servers in an EDMS can deploy the computation and storage resources to nearby IoT devices and offer data processing services. Therefore, queries toward massive sensory data can be processed in an EDMS in a distributed manner and the edge servers can handle the sensory data in a distributed manner, reducing the workload of the cloud. In this article, we define a query processing problem in an EDMS, which aims to derive a distributed query plan with the minimum query response latency. We prove that this problem is NP-Hard and propose a corresponding approximation algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm is bounded. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm through extensive simulations.

Battery-free wireless sensor network (including energy harvesting network and energy rechargeable network) is a new network architecture that has been proposed in recent years to solve the lifetime limitation problem of conventional wireless sensor networks. Battery-free sensor nodes can harvest energy from environmental energy resources or from artificial power stations. Thus, the lifetime of a battery-free wireless sensor network is unlimited in terms of energy. The specific properties of battery-free wireless sensor networks have brought new challenges in fundamental issues, such as energy management, networking and data acquisition, which means the existing algorithms in wireless sensor networks cannot be adopted directly. The battery-free wireless sensor network can be regarded as a totally new topic in IoT and has attracted much attention from researchers. Many algorithms have been proposed to solve the fundamental problems in battery-free wireless sensor networks. The objective of this survey is to comprehensively summarize and analyze the existing works. In this survey, we first introduce the existing algorithms from three fundamental aspects including energy management, networking and data acquisition. Then we present some specific applications of battery-free wireless sensor networks.

Sleep posture recognition is practically important in various scenarios such as sleep healthcare, bedridden patient care, and chronic disease diagnosis. With concerns of user privacy preserving, we prefer the wireless sensing methods to computer vision methods when dealing with sleep posture recognition. However, the existing wireless sensing methods suffer from at least one of the following major limitations: (i) difficult to deploy in practice; (ii) few posture categories; (iii) insufficient accuracy; (iv) poor generalization ability. In this paper, we use commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) mmWave radar to implement a sleep posture recognition system called PosMonitor. When designing the PosMonitor system, we need to address the following challenging issues. First, we propose an angle purification method based on multi-frame joint analysis to alleviate the sparsity and instability of the point cloud. Then, we endow the point cloud with respiratory features to enhance its representation of the sleep posture. Further, to make the system applicable to different users, we extract relative respiratory features by normalization to overcome individual differences. Extensive experimental results show that our PosMonitor system can achieve 98% accuracy on average in recognizing 6 typical sleep postures and has good reliability across different conditions.

As one of the most popular consumer electronics, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has the potential to assist User Equipment (UE) in the Internet of Everything. Mobile edge computing (MEC) is also an emerging technique that can provide sufficient computing resources to IoE users. In this paper, we focused on the UAV-assisted MEC problem with mobile UEs, where the UAV serves as an MEC server to assist UEs in computing and acts as a relay to deliver tasks to a ground access point (AP). The objective is to minimize the average time for completing all tasks in the network while jointly optimizing resource allocation such as communication bandwidth, CPU frequency, task division ratio, and UAV’s three-dimensional location deployment. First, we proposed an online MEC network adjustment scheme. Then, we decomposed the formulated non-convex problem into three low-complexity subproblems. Last, we proposed a successive convex approximation-based joint optimization algorithm to solve them. In addition, we presented heuristic conclusions in task allocation rules, UAV flight trajectory prediction, and UAV hovering altitude selection, which can further reduce task completion time and deepen the understanding of the working mode of mobile edge servers. Simulation results show that the algorithm can significantly reduce the completion time.

Due to the large volume of IoT data, conventional sensor network based and the cloud base IoT systems cannot handle latency-sensitive and resource-consuming IoT applications. Sensor networks do not have enough computation resources and also suffer from a limited network lifetime. On the other hand, the cloud based IoT system is far away from the users and the physical world, and cannot satisfy the real-time requirement of IoT applications. We adopt the IoT edge network to address these challenges and process IoT applications in modern IoT systems. The IoT edge network is an emerging computing architecture in the IoT. Compared to the sensor nodes in conventional sensor networks, the edge servers have more computation resources. Compared to the remote cloud, the edge servers are closer to the users and the physical world. However, processing IoT applications in the edge network still remains challenging. First, how to process concurrent IoT applications has not been fully investigated. Second, the inner relationship between the network resource and the application latency has not been deeply analyzed. Third, the function conflict problem in edge servers has not been taken seriously. To solve the above challenges, we propose the Energy and Latency Efficient Processing Plan for Concurrent IoT Applications Problem which aims to construct an application processing plan by jointly considering the concurrency, the energy-latency relationship, and the function conflict problems. We prove that such a problem is NP-Hard, and algorithms are proposed accordingly. Furthermore, we also estimate the performance of the proposed algorithms by numerical results.
