β-glucosidase is a kind of enzyme that can hydrolyze β-glucosidase bonds, and it plays a key role in many fields, such as lignocellulose degradation and wine brewing. The global β-glucosidase market is currently estimated to be USD 40 billion, and more is expected in the future. This trend is mainly due to the demand for enzymes in biofuel processing. At present, β-glucosidase is mainly derived from microorganisms, animals, plants and so on. It has received great attention due to its ease of production, catalytic efficiency and versatility, which have promoted its biotechnology potential in different industries. With the increasing demand for β-glucosidases, various cost-effective methods are being explored to discover, redesign and enhance their production and functional properties. Therefore, this paper reviews the latest progress in the application of β-glucosidase in industry. In this regard, the focus is on the use of recombinant technology, protein engineering and immobilization technology to improve the industrial applicability of the enzyme. In addition, the application status of β-glucosidase in production and life was analyzed.

Protease secretion is crucial for degrading nematode cuticles using nematophagous fungus Purpureocillium lilacinum, but the secretion pattern of protease remains poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the degradation mechanism of proteases by investigating the characteristics of protease secretion under various carbon and nitrogen sources, and different carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratios in P. lilacinum. The results showed that corn flour as a carbon source and yeast extract as a nitrogen source specifically induced protease secretion in P. lilacinum. P. lilacinum produced significant amounts of gelatinase and casein enzyme at C:N ratios of 10:1, 20:1, and 40:1, indicating that higher C:N ratios were more beneficial for secreting extracellular proteases. Proteomic analysis revealed 14 proteases, including 4 S8 serine endopeptidases and one M28 aminopeptidase. Among four S8 serine peptidases, Alp1 exhibited a high secretion level at C:N ratio less than 5:1, whereas PR1C, PR1D, and P32 displayed higher secretion levels at higher C:N ratios. In addition, the transcription levels of GATA transcription factors were investigated, revealing that Asd-4, A0A179G170, and A0A179HGL4 were more prevalent at a C:N ratio of 40:1. In contrast, the transcription levels of SREP, AreA, and NsdD were higher at lower C:N ratios. The putative regulatory profile of extracellular protease production in P. lilacinum, induced by different C:N ratios, was analyzed. The findings offered insights into the complexity of protease production and aided in the hydrolytic degradation of nematode cuticles.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the degradation mechanism of Bifidobacterium on breast milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and its application in infant nutrition. The composition and characteristics of HMOs were introduced, and the degradation mechanism of HMOs by Bifidobacterium was described, including intracellular and extracellular digestion and species-specific differences. The interaction between Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides in the process of degrading HMOs and its effect on intestinal microecology were analyzed. The effects of HMO formula milk powder on the intestinal microbiota of infants were discussed, including simulating breast milk composition, regulating intestinal flora and immune function, infection prevention, and brain development. Finally, the research results are summarized, and future research directions are proposed to provide directions for research in the field of infant nutrition.

The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively review the research progress of nattokinase in lowering blood lipid, including its source, structure and physicochemical properties, mechanisms of functions, clinical research status, and safety considerations, so as to provide reference for further research on the application of nattokinase in the treatment of dyslipidemia. Natto is a traditional Japanese fermented food, which is made from soybeans fermented by Bacillus natto. During the fermentation process, natto will produce a variety of biologically active substances, including nattokinase. Nattokinase (NK) is a serine protease with stable enzyme activity and good freeze–thaw tolerance, which exerts lipid-lowering and anti-atherosclerotic effects by activating hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), inhibiting hydroxymethylglutaryl monoacyl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), and enhancing lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity. Large-scale clinical trials have confirmed that nattokinase significantly improves the lipid profile and reduces the atherosclerotic plaque area and intima-media thickness with a favorable safety profile. Compared with traditional lipid-lowering drugs (e.g., statins and fibrates), nattokinase has a multifaceted lipid-lowering mechanism and lower risk of side effects, which makes it suitable for patients intolerant of traditional drugs; when combined with natural products such as statins, fibrates, red yeast, and lifestyle interventions, it can play a synergistic role and further reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. There are various types of nattokinase preparations on the market, and consumers should choose regular products with high activity and purity, and pay attention to their safety and applicable population.

Biochar, a carbon-rich product of biomass pyrolysis, is undergoing a paradigm shift from a conventional soil amendment to a precision regulation tool within smart agricultural systems. This review examines the evolving applications of biochar, integrating nanotechnology, sensor systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate precision management of carbon, water, and nutrient cycles. We investigate how the combination of biochar and intelligent technologies fosters closed-loop systems that enhance resource efficiency, mitigate climate change, and promote environmental sustainability. Key topics include the functional enhancement of biochar via nanosensor integration and its role in climate-smart agriculture. By synthesizing scientific evidence and case studies, we highlight biochar’s potential to tackle global agricultural challenges while underscoring the necessity for collaborative governance and technological innovation.
