In this paper, an enhanced deep reinforcement learning approach is presented for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating in dynamic and potentially hazardous environments. Initially, the capability to discern obstacles from visual data is achieved through the application of the Yolov8-StrongSort technique. Concurrently, a novel data storage system for deep Q-networks (DQN), named dynamic data memory (DDM), is introduced to hasten the learning process and convergence for UAVs. Furthermore, addressing the issue of UAVs’ paths veering too close to obstacles, a novel strategy employing an artificial potential field to adjust the reward function is introduced, which effectively guides the UAVs away from proximate obstacles. Rigorous simulation tests in an AirSim-based environment confirm the effectiveness of these methods. Compared to DQN, dueling DQN, M-DQN, improved Q-learning, DDM-DQN, EPF (enhanced potential field), APF-DQN, and L1-MBRL, our algorithm achieves the highest success rate of 77.67%, while also having the lowest average number of moving steps. Additionally, we conducted obstacle avoidance experiments with UAVs with different densities of obstacles. These tests highlight fast learning convergence and real-time obstacle detection and avoidance, ensuring successful achievement of the target.

Insulators are essential for maintaining electrical isolation in transmission lines, with the timely and accurate identification of their defects via Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being crucial for ensuring operational stability and safety in high-voltage transmission lines. Due to complex environmental conditions, varying viewing angles, and unstable lighting conditions, existing insulator defect detection algorithms still face challenges, including missed detection, false detection, and inadequate adaptability for detecting small-sized defects in UAV captured images. This study proposes a lightweight insulator defect detection method (LDDFSF-YOLO11) that focuses on small-sized features to efficiently detect and identify insulator defects. In the LDDFSF-YOLO11 model, a focused feature extraction module (MFFEConv) is proposed to enhance the feature extraction capability of the backbone network. In addition, a collaborative attention mechanism and a multi-scale feature fusion module (MDMF) are proposed to enhance the model’s ability to detect small-sized defects in remote and complex backgrounds, effectively solving the problems of missed detections, false detections, and poor adaptability to complex backgrounds. In addition, we propose an RWLoss loss function to improve the accuracy of bounding box matching in the model. And optimize the network structure through channel pruning technology to improve model lightweighting. Finally, experimental validation was conducted using a self built insulator dataset and the China Power Line Insulator Dataset (CPLID). The experimental results showed that compared with the baseline model YOLO11, the LDDFSF-YOLO11 model improved AP50 by 9.8%, 8.2%, and 5.4%, mAP by 7.1%, and reduced model size by 56.1%, accounting for only 4.2MB, in three types of small-sized defects: fractional insulator, drop insulator, and flash insulator, respectively. The LDDFSF-YOLO11 model can quickly and accurately identify small-scale defects in insulators in complex backgrounds, making important contributions to the safe and stable operation of high-voltage transmission lines.

Enhanced animal welfare has emerged as a pivotal element in contemporary precision animal husbandry, with bovine monitoring constituting a significant facet of precision agriculture. The evolution of intelligent agriculture in recent years has significantly facilitated the integration of drone flight monitoring tools and innovative systems, leveraging deep learning to interpret bovine behavior. Smart drones, outfitted with monitoring systems, have evolved into viable solutions for wildlife protection and monitoring as well as animal husbandry. Nevertheless, challenges arise under actual and multifaceted ranch conditions, where scale alterations, unpredictable movements, and occlusions invariably influence the accurate tracking of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To address these challenges, this manuscript proposes a tracking algorithm based on deep learning, adhering to the Joint Detection Tracking (JDT) paradigm established by the CenterTrack algorithm. This algorithm is designed to satisfy the requirements of multi-objective tracking in intricate practical scenarios. In comparison with several preeminent tracking algorithms, the proposed Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) algorithm demonstrates superior performance in Multiple Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA), Multiple Object Tracking Precision (MOTP), and IDF1. Additionally, it exhibits enhanced efficiency in managing Identity Switches (ID), False Positives (FP), and False Negatives (FN). This algorithm proficiently mitigates the inherent challenges of MOT in complex, livestock-dense scenarios.

This paper presents an autonomous unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) tracking system based on an improved long and short-term memory (LSTM) Kalman filter (KF) model. The system can estimate the three-dimensional (3D) attitude and precisely track the target object without manual intervention. Specifically, the YOLOX algorithm is employed to track and recognize the target object, which is then combined with the improved KF model for precise tracking and recognition. In the LSTM-KF model, three different LSTM networks (f, Q, and R) are adopted to model a nonlinear transfer function to enable the model to learn rich and dynamic Kalman components from the data. The experimental results disclose that the improved LSTM-KF model exhibits higher recognition accuracy than the standard LSTM and the independent KF model. It verifies the robustness, effectiveness, and reliability of the autonomous UAV tracking system based on the improved LSTM-KF model in object recognition and tracking and 3D attitude estimation.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have made significant advances in autonomous sensing, particularly in the field of precision agriculture. Effective path planning is critical for autonomous navigation in large orchards to ensure that UAVs are able to recognize the optimal route between the start and end points. When UAVs perform tasks such as crop protection, monitoring, and data collection in orchard environments, they must be able to adapt to dynamic conditions. To address these challenges, this study proposes an enhanced Q-learning algorithm designed to optimize UAV path planning by combining static and dynamic obstacle avoidance features. A shortest distance priority (SDP) strategy is integrated into the learning process to minimize the distance the UAV must travel to reach the target. In addition, the root mean square propagation (RMSP) method is used to dynamically adjust the learning rate according to gradient changes, which accelerates the learning process and improves path planning efficiency. In this study, firstly, the proposed method was compared with state-of-the-art path planning techniques (including A-star, Dijkstra, and traditional Q-learning) in terms of learning time and path length through a grid-based 2D simulation environment. The results showed that the proposed method significantly improved performance compared to existing methods. In addition, 3D simulation experiments were conducted in the AirSim virtual environment. Due to the complexity of the 3D state, a deep neural network was used to calculate the Q-value based on the proposed algorithm. The results indicate that the proposed method can achieve the shortest path planning and obstacle avoidance operations in an orchard 3D simulation environment. Therefore, drones equipped with this algorithm are expected to make outstanding contributions to the development of precision agriculture through intelligent navigation and obstacle avoidance.
