Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between compulsive use of social media and orthorexia, with a focus on the mediating role of eating attitudes. Patients and Methods: The study involved 255 participants between the ages of 18– 65 who did not have any psychiatric disorders or developmental disabilities. The participants completed a Sociodemographic Information Form, Orthorexia Nervosa Inventory, Social Media Addiction Scale, and Eating Attitudes Test. Results: The results showed a positive correlation between orthorexia and all other scales and sub-scales. Multiple regression analyses revealed that eating attitudes were a significant predictor of all sub-dimensions of orthorexia. Additionally, the sub-dimension of Conflict on the Social Media Addiction Scale was found to predict the Impairments sub-dimension of orthorexia. Further analysis using the PROCESS macro showed that compulsive use of social media not only directly predicted orthorexia, but also indirectly through eating attitudes. Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of addressing both compulsive use of social media and eating attitudes when working with individuals who exhibit orthorexic symptoms in clinical settings.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between orthorexia nervosa and social media addiction, eating attitudes and body perception in the general population.Method: In this cross-sectional study, 345 individuals without mental illness according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5) participated. Data were collected using sociodemographic data form, orthorexia nervosa inventory (ONE), social media addiction scale (SMBI), eating attitude test (EAT), and body perception scale (BPS). Results: Of the 345 participants, 163 (47.2%) were female and 182 (52.8%) were male. The orthorectic symptoms of individuals who followed healthy eating programs on social media were higher than those who did not. In correlation analyses, ONE was positively correlated with SMBI and EAT and negatively correlated with BPS. When orthorectic symptoms were analyzed according to dependency level, orthorectic symptoms of moderately dependent and highly dependent individuals were higher than those of low dependent individuals, and orthorectic symptoms of low dependent individuals were higher than those of non-addicted individuals. In multiple linear regression analyses, the conflict subscale of the SMBI and the EAT scores predicted the ONE total scores and these variables explained 26.6% of the variance. Conclusion: Orthorectic symptoms were positively associated with social media addiction, impaired eating attitudes and low body perception. The available data suggest that social media can affect mental health. Social media literacy should be encouraged and awareness of orthorexia nervosa should be increased.

The similarities between the clinical symptoms and temperament characteristics of individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the surgical personality are noteworthy and the ADHD research in surgeons has remained neglected. In this study, the aim was to investigate the frequency of adult ADHD in Turkish surgical trainees and its effects on their medical branch selection. The 114 participants in the study were evaluated using a Sociodemographic Data Form, which included factors affecting the choice of surgical branches, and the Adult ADD/ADHD DSM IV-Based Diagnostic Screening and Rating Scale. 32.5% of the participants were female, 66.7% were male. The mean age of the participants was 28.21 ± 2.43. Adult ADHD symptoms were found in 31.6% of the surgeons, of which n = 13(36.1%) were the inattentive subtype, n = 14(38.9%) were the hyperactivity subtype and n = 9(25.0%) were the combined subtype. While a statistically significant difference was found between departments in terms of inattention subtypes (p = 0.003), no statistically significant difference was found in terms of hyperactivity subtype (p > 0.005). This study highlights that ADHD is common among surgical trainees and its assessment may be significant. It was hypothesized that surgical trainees with ADHD may have chosen the field of surgery as a way of coping with the disorder. It was thought that the demanding nature of surgical work may provide a favourable environment for those with ADHD, allowing them to channel their innate characteristics into a focused and goal-directed pursuit. Clinical trial number: not applicable.

Rationale: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare, life-threatening complication of neuroleptic (antipsychotic) medications. Paliperidone is an atypical antipsychotic used in the treatment of schizophrenia. While current evidence suggests that atypical oral antipsychotics have a lower incidence of NMS compared to typical oral antipsychotics, there is limited information available on the incidence and management of NMS associated with long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics. More case studies are needed to fully understand the true incidence of NMS associated with LAI atypical antipsychotics. This report aims to present our experience with a patient with schizophrenia who developed NMS as a result of taking LAI paliperidone, an atypical antipsychotic. Patient concerns: A 63-year-old male diagnosed with schizophrenia was brought to the emergency room with complaints of high fever, muscle contraction, tremors, urinary and fecal incontinence, and a change of consciousness, which started 2 days after the first LAI paliperidone injection. During the psychiatric examination, the patient exhibited tremors, a high fever of 39.5°C, and muscle rigidity. He was confused and had impaired orientation. The patient’s creatine kinase, white blood cell count, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase levels were measured at 1895 U/L, 13750/mm3, 55 IU/L, and 45 IU/L, respectively. The electrocardiogram showed sinus tachycardia. Diagnoses: The patient’s psychiatric examination, vital signs, and laboratory results were consistent with NMS. Interventions: The patient received treatment with bromocriptine and amisulpride for 13 days. Outcomes: With this treatment, the patient’s delirium improved and the patient became stable. The levels of creatine kinase, white blood cell count, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase decreased to normal values. The patient was discharged from the hospital after 14 days of treatment. Lessons: Although NMS is not very common in patients using antipsychotics, it is important because it is an emergency condition that can result in death if not treated appropriately. Clinicians should consider NMS in patients taking atypical antipsychotics such as paliperidone.

Purpose: The earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, caused significant losses in Turkey. While a large number of people are exposed to trauma, only a few develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It has been suggested that peritraumatic dissociation and dysfunctional beliefs also play a role in the emergence and maintenance of PTSD, and resilience is one of the most important protective factors for PTSD. This study is to test the moderated mediating role of resilience on beliefs about losing control (BALC) and its associations with peritraumatic dissociation and PTSD in earthquake survivors. Participants and Methods: A total of 112 individuals living in the tent city of Hatay and Kahramanmaraş Provinces, which experienced earthquakes in 2023 in Turkey, were included in the study. Participants completed Sociodemographic Information Form, PTSD Symptom Scale-Self-Report, Brief Resilience Scale, Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire, and Beliefs about Losing Control Inventory. Results: Peritraumatic dissociation positively correlated with BALC (β = 0.487, p < 0.001). BALC acts as a mediator and positively predicts post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) (β = 0.321, p < 0.001). The interaction between BALC and resilience also had a significant effect on PTSS (β = 0.032, p < 0.05). The relationship between BALC and PTSS was significant at high and medium resilience levels (p< 0.05) but not at low resilience. Conclusion: Peritraumatic dissociation predicts PTSS both directly and through BALC, and higher levels of resilience are more likely than lower levels of resilience to attenuate the effects of BALC on PTSS in earthquake survivors.

Objective: It was aimed to evaluate the phobia levels of COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) in medical staff working in the pandemic service and intensive care service and to examine its relationship with psychosocial impact levels. Material and Method: The study included 100 people working in the pandemic service and intensive care units in the first year of the pandemic. Sociodemographic Data Form, COVID-19 Pandemic Psychosocial Impact Scale (CPPIS) and COVID-19 Phobia Scale (CPS) were administered to all participants. Results: The mean age of the participants was 32.5±7.4 years and 74% of them were women. Of them 29% were doctors, 52% were nurses, 19% were allied health personnel and 66% worked in the service, 29% in the intensive care unit and 5% in both. There were very strong correlations between the CPS and the CPPIS total score, the death anxiety and anxious thoughts subscale scores. A strong positive correlation was found between the CPS and CPPIS subscales scores including close relationships, functionality and somatic symptoms. A significant positive correlation was found between CPS and CPPIS scores and the duration of working in the pandemic service and intensive care unit. Conclusion: It was thought that as choranophobia increased in medical staffs working in the pandemic service, their psychosocial effects also increased. It has been thought that reducing the working time in the service and/or intensive care unit during the pandemic, performing short-term rotations, may reduce the level of psychosocial impact and even be protective in terms of mental health of medical staff.
