Brazilian forest producers have developed integrated management programs to increase the effectiveness of the control of leaf-cutting ants of the genera Atta and Acromyrmex. These measures reduced the costs and quantity of insecticides used in the plantations. Such integrated management programs are based on monitoring the ant nests, as well as the need and timing of the control methods. Chemical control employing baits is the most commonly used method, however, biological, mechanical and cultural control methods, besides plant resistance, can reduce the quantity of chemicals applied in the plantations.

OCCURRENCE OF Mononychellus sp. AND Oligonychus sp. MITES IN AFRICAN MAHOGANY (Khaya ivorensis) IN BRAZIL ABSTRACT The African mahogany is native from Africa and was introduced in Brazil in the 1970s as a replacement for the Brazilian mahogany. We have observed that plants aged two years showed signs of attacks in the leaves in a planting located in Rio Manso, which is a city of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We found two species of mites, Mononychellus sp. and Oligonychus sp., both of the Tetranychidae family. The observed injuries were: wavy leaves, tanning, decreased leaf area and darkening of leaves. This work is the first registration of Mononychellus sp. and Oligonychus sp. mites in K. ivorensis plantations in Brazil. Keywords: first report, fitosanitary, forest protection, injury.
