Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are usually found in food-producing animals worldwide. Ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic, can lead to antibiotic residues in food products, posing health risks to consumers and contributing to the development of antimicrobial resistance. Foodborne illnesses occur when adequate attention is not paid to food hygiene and safety, raising the potential for resistant bacteria to spread to humans through the food chain. This study aims to determine the presence of antibiotic-resistant organism contamination and ciprofloxacin residue in raw pork and chicken. Forty-three pork and 33 chicken meat samples were collected from fresh markets in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Antibiotic-resistant organisms were detected by microbial culture and identified by MALDITOF-MS. The antimicrobial sensitivity tests were used to confirm antibiotic resistance. The ciprofloxacin was detected by using an immunochromatographic-based test kit for screening. The results found Extended Spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae were detected at 46.51% and 9.30% in pork and 69.70% and 6.06% in chicken meat samples, respectively. Moreover, ciprofloxacin residues were detected in nine samples (11.84%). Based on this study’s findings, the people who are involved in the food chain must be concerned about food safety and food hygiene.

Ciprofloxacin is metabolized from enrofloxacin for use in poultry to manage respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, raising concerns due to its widespread tissue distribution and prolonged systemic persistence. This lateral flow immunoassay was designed to detect ciprofloxacin using an alternative IgY antibody binded with gold nanoparticles to detect ciprofloxacin residue in raw pork meat samples. The developed strip test achieved adequate sensitivity and specificity under the optimized conditions for pH, which is 7.8, and 20% of MeOH in 0.01 M phosphate buffer containing 1% Tween-20 was used for the buffer composition. An antibody concentration of 1.25 µg/mL was used to bind with gold nanoparticles as a probe for detection. The concentration of the test line (coating antigen) and control line (anti-IgY secondary antibody) was 0.5 mg/mL and 0.2 mg/mL, respectively. The efficiency of the developed strip test showed sensitivity with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ciprofloxacin at 7.36 µg/mL, and the limit of detection was 0.2 µg/mL. The proposed strategy exhibited potential for monitoring ciprofloxacin in raw pork samples.

This study aims to determine the prevalence of microorganisms and antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in beehives located on different plantations in Thailand. Seventeen swabs immersed in transport media were utilized for samples from different zones within beehives. Traditional microbial culture-based methods, biochemical tests, MALDI-TOF MS (VITEK® MS, bioMerieux, Marcy-l’Étoile, France), and antibiotic drug susceptibility (disk-diffusion) tests were used to detect microorganism and antimicrobial resistance bacteria. The results from 16 beehive swabs found Gram-positive bacteria at 59.5%, Gram-negative bacteria at 35.1%, and fungi (yeast) at 5.4%. These organisms are classified as 11, 11, and 2 types of Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi (yeast), respectively. Furthermore, no organism showed resistance to vancomycin or cefoxitin for antibiotic drug susceptibility testing. In contrast, all Acinetobacter spp. were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, imipenem, and meropenem, except for Acinetobacter schindleri, which was resistant to ceftazidime and cefotaxime. For other organisms, due to the limitations of tests to identify some environmental microbial species, the antimicrobial susceptibility test results cannot be interpreted as resistant or susceptible to the drug for these organisms. The study’s findings will support prevention, healthcare services, and public health systems.
