Unprecedented floods in 2014 caused huge consequences on Serbian lignite opencast mines, such as halt of coal production and damages of the mining equipment. Three equipment revitalization options were urgently assessed to continue with coal production on opencast mine Tamnava-West Field. This paper compares the economic risks of the three investment options for lignite mine Tamnava-West Field mining equipment revitalization, based on this experience and probable risk of a repeated event. The results of the detailed quantitative risk analysis should verify the urgent decision and ranked with a multiple-criteria decision analysis.
The technical and technological characteristics of the Stanari Power Plant block were designed based on the results of the analysis of coal samples from the Raskovac opencast mine. There have not been any notable variations in the coal quality during the Stanari thermal power plant?s present operating term from the project?s stated values. For the expected lifetime of mine, i.e., the thermal power plant operation until 2050, it is necessary to unearth the total remaining available coal reserves from the Stanari basin. The thermal power plant?s operation may be significantly impacted by variations in coal quality at the Ostruznja opencast mine. The use of coal with quality parameters lower than designed can cause problems in the operation of the boiler, stoppages in operation, and an increased volume of maintenance and overhaul of the boiler. Coal quality control in the process of sampling, mining, transportation, and depositing of coal must be at a level that enables smooth operation of the thermal power plant. This paper presents test results during the operation of the thermal power plant burning coal of different quality, (lower calorific value in range from 9100 kJ/kg to ? 7500 kJ/kg), a risk assessment of long-term planning, and the effectiveness and economy of the thermal power plant operation. The potential economic effects and reliability of the operation of thermal power plants due to the increased consumption of coal, limestone and self-consumption in operating modes with significantly lower coal quality than designed were analyzed in particular.
The tradition of successful mining is long, while the mineral and raw material potential of the Republic of Serbia is very significant because, on its territory, in addition to the critical ones, there are also a large number of other deposits and occurrences of metallic, non-metallic, and energy mineral raw materials, as well as significant reserves of underground water and geothermal energy. Despite the enormous global importance of mining development, and due to growing environmental problems, today in the Republic of Serbia and around the world, the success and efficiency of the implementation of strategic mining projects are increasingly threatened, bearing in mind the different and often opposing views of interested parties. With the consistent implementation of new strategic decisions and legal regulations, which are in accordance with globally accepted standards of sustainable mining and good practice, it is possible to fulfill all prerequisites for the rehabilitation and modernization of existing ones and the realization of more new sustainable mining projects in the Republic of Serbia.

The Drmno opencast mine, located near the Danube and Mlava rivers, relies on the selection of an appropriate dewatering method. The stability of the final slopes of the mine is influenced by this choice. In this paper, the final slope stability of the Drmno opencast mine is analyzed using two characteristic profiles and three types of dewatering.
Slope failure risks and corresponding probabilities and consequences are related to a large number of causes, thus, their quantification is a complex process. The semi-qualitative method FMEA was modified into a quantitative value method V-FMEA for specific mining requirements, which enabled the risk assessment to perform a constant check of acceptable probabilities of the overall slope failure and the implementation of detection and preventive activities as functions of the present value of consequence costs. The large open-pit mine Field E slope failure served as a good example of the proposed new risk evaluation methodology.
