The aim of this study was to compare the concentration of phenolic compounds, glucosinolates, proteins, sugars and vitamin C between kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. acephala gongylodes), Savoy cabbage (B. oleracea sabauda), Brussels sprouts (B. oleracea gemmifera), cauliflower (B. oleracea botrytis), radish (Raphanus sativus) and garden cress (Lepidium sativum) microgreens for their antioxidant and hypoglycemic potential. In addition, we applied an in vitro-simulated system of human digestion in order to track the bioaccessibility of the selected phenolic representatives, and the stability of the microgreens’ antioxidant and hypoglycemic potential in terms of α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition after each digestion phase. Using spectrophotometric and RP-HPLC methods with statistical analyses, we found that garden cress had the lowest soluble sugar content, while Savoy cabbage and Brussels sprouts had the highest glucosinolate levels (76.21 ± 4.17 mg SinE/g dm and 77.73 ± 3.33 mg SinE/g dm, respectively). Brussels sprouts were the most effective at inhibiting protein glycation (37.98 ± 2.30% inhibition). A very high positive correlation (r = 0.830) between antiglycation potential and conjugated sinapic acid was recorded. For the first time, the antidiabetic potential of microgreens after in vitro digestion was studied. Kohlrabi microgreens best inhibited α-amylase in both initial and intestinal digestion (60.51 ± 3.65% inhibition and 62.96 ± 3.39% inhibition, respectively), and also showed the strongest inhibition of α-glucosidase post-digestion (19.22 ± 0.08% inhibition). Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and radish had less stable α-glucosidase than α-amylase inhibitors during digestion. Kohlrabi, Savoy cabbage, and garden cress retained inhibition of both enzymes after digestion. Kohlrabi antioxidant capacity remained unchanged after digestion. The greatest variability was seen in the original samples, while the intestinal phase resulted in the most convergence, indicating that digestion reduced differences between the samples. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of various microgreens as sources of bioactive compounds with antidiabetic and antiglycation properties. Notably, kohlrabi microgreens demonstrated significant enzyme inhibition after digestion, suggesting their promise in managing carbohydrate metabolism and supporting metabolic health.

Croatian pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) populations represent southern range peripheral populations, often viewed as sources of valuable diversity and drought-resistant ecotypes. At the same time, they endure stronger selection pressures as a result of climate change. The leaves of 20 individuals per population (17) were sampled in a field trial and analyzed using 10 nuclear and 9 chloroplast SSRs to determine the level of intrapopulation genetic variability and genetic differentiation. Analysis with nSSRs revealed deviation from HWE in seven populations. AMOVA showed a high intra-population diversity (98.53%) and a small but statistically significant inter-population differentiation. Isolation by distance explained 19.6% of differentiation. Average FST between populations was low (0.013) compared with usual values for peripheral populations. Populations were rich in cpSSR haplotypes, confirming the hotspot of diversity caused by the encounter of recolonization routes. Unbiased haplotype diversity (HE) from 9 chloroplast SSRs and 325 individuals was (HE = 0.440). Sixty-six different haplotypes were grouped in three maternal lineages by both a median-joining network and a neighbor-joining algorithm. AMOVA for cpSSRs showed statistically significant diversity among populations (70.23%), suggesting genetic differentiation, but also a probable anthropogenic effect. AMOVA of nSSRs within and between lineages showed that original recolonization patterns of nuclear diversity were subsequently erased by gene flow.

Levamisole (2, 3, 5, 6-tetrahydro-6-phenylimidazole 2,1-b thiazole) is a well-known nonspecific stimulator of host defence mechanisms. In previous investigations, we have found that levamisole acts on cell-mediated immunity in challenge-induced porcine postweaning colibacillosis (PWC). We assume that levamisole could also act synergistically on humoural immune response when applied as an adjuvant with vaccine candidate strains for oral immunization of weaned pigs against PWC. The influence of levamisole in combination with experimental F4ac+ nonenterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (non-ETEC) vacinal strain on proliferation of IgA+ cells was examined in 4-week-old weaned pigs experimentally infected with ETEC. We have performed identification and morphometric quantification of the plasma cell phenotype within jejunal/ileal mucosa. Plasma cells were identified by immunohistochemistry with monoclonal anti-IgA antibodies and quantifying by use of digital image analysis. Quantification of IgA+ cells from levamisole-primed vaccinated and challenge-infected weaned pigs showed significantly increased number (P < 0.05 for both jejunum and ileum) compared with those observed in unprimed vaccinated/challenge-infected controls. It is suggested from these results that levamisole may contribute in initiation of local humoural immune response to enteric pathogens, such as enterotoxigenic E. coli.

Since its introduction into Europe in the first half of the 20th century, Cryphonectria parasitica has been gradually spreading across the natural range of the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.), infecting the trees and causing lethal bark cankers. Serendipitously, a hyperparasitic Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1), which attenuates C. parasitica virulence in combination with more tolerant European chestnut species, was able to ward off the worst effect of the disease. In North America, unfortunately, the native Castanea dentata is now functionally extinct since it occurs only as root sprouts in eastern deciduous forests where it was once dominant. In our work, we investigated changes in C. parasitica populations over time and the regional variability in chestnut populations’ tolerance toward the blight disease. While vegetative compatibility (vc) type diversity and prevalence of hypovirulence remained similar as in previous studies, in the Buje population, unlike in previous studies, we were unable to find any hypovirulent fungal strains. The most common vegetative compatibility types (vc types) were EU-1, EU-2 and EU-12. However, several rare EU-types were found, including one previously unreported: EU-46. By inoculating several C. parasitica strains on tree stems from several chestnut populations, we observed that the induced lesion size was affected by the type of inoculum (CHV1-free or CHV1-infected), genotype-related individual chestnut stem and chestnut stem population of origin-related variability. The largest lesions were induced by CHV1-free fungal isolate DOB-G: 20.13 cm2 (95% C.I. 18.10–22.15) and the smallest by CHV1-infected L14/EP713: 2.49 cm2 (95% C.I. 1.59–3.39). Surprisingly, the size of the lesions induced by other CHV1-infected strains fell somewhere in between these extremes. The size of induced lesions was dependent on the population of origin as well and ranged from 11.60 cm2 (95% C.I. 9.87–13.33) for stems from the Moslavačka gora population to 17.75 cm2 (95% C.I. 15.63–19.87) for stems from Ozalj.

Forests in Croatia are characterized by higher levels of biodiversity in species composition. Three significant events occurred in Croatian forests over the past ten years, all of which have a common denominator—sanitary felling. The challenge in the sustainable development of forests started with the ice storm of 2014 that amounted to damage and raised costs in forest stands to EUR 231,180,921. The second challenge was in 2017 when the bark beetle outbreak occurred in the Gorski Kotar region. In December 2017, a windstorm in the same area caused damage to approximately 500,000 m3 of wood stock. The third climate extreme was in the summer of 2023 when three storms with strong winds and heavy rain damaged even-aged forests of common beech and pedunculated oak. The damage was substantial: 3,954,181 m3 of timber was mostly broken and destroyed across 21,888.61 ha of area, and the most damage was in the pedunculate oak forests of Slavonia, i.e., Quercus robur subsp. Slavonica, at 1,939,175 m3. For the main meteorological stations in lowland Croatia, data on precipitation amounts (mm) and wind speeds (m/s) were collected for the period 1981–2023, and the results of our analysis for the last decade are presented. Meteorological drought was analyzed using the rain anomaly index RAI. Data regarding open space fires in the Mediterranean karst area of Croatia were collected from the Croatian Firefighting Association, and the calculation of the burned area index (BAI) was determined. Throughout the entire area of Gorski Kotar County, a sample of permanent plots was set and used to assess the extent of forest damage from the ice storm in 2014 and for the establishment of permanent monitoring of the recovery of trees and forests damaged by the ice storm. The monitoring of bark beetles in the Gorski Kotar region started in 1995 and is still in progress. The aftermath of bark beetle outbreaks in two uneven-aged silver fir stands was studied after a bark beetle outbreak and a sanitary felling of 4655.34 m3. In the area of lowland Croatia, a statistically significant and positive correlation was found between sanitary fellings, maximum wind speeds, and rain anomaly indices in even-aged forests. In conclusion, sustainable development will be at risk due to difficult recovery, rising costs, and overall climate change in the years to come.

Planning in forestry should be based on accurate and reliable data. UAVs equipped with RGB cameras can enable fast and relatively cheap surveys, but their accuracy depends on many factors. Therefore, it is necessary to determine when UAVs can be used and when this type of survey gives data that does not reflect the true ground situation. This research analyzed the usability of a UAV, equipped with a RGB camera, for recording normal cross-sections and side ditch depths of the forest road in a lowland forest. The research was conducted in two time periods: during winter and spring, i.e., outside and during the vegetation season. DTMs of the area researched were created based on aerial photographs taken with the UAV, Z values of terrain points were read, and the depths of side ditches were calculated based on read Z values. The water depth in the side ditches and the vegetation height on the entire road body width were recorded to determine the influence of these two variables on the UAV survey error. Terrain points were recorded with the total station, which was the reference measurement method. An analysis of the obtained (read) DTM Z values revealed RMSE values of 10.09 cm for winter (outside vegetation) and 36.41 cm for spring (vegetation) UAV survey. The side ditch, calculated based on the DTM of the winter and spring periods of UAV recording, were statistically significantly different from the side ditch depths measured using the total station. Correcting the obtained data with water depth and vegetation height lowered the differences in Z values, as well as the ditch depths visible from RMSEZ (7.70 cm) for the winter UAV survey, with no statistically significant difference in side ditch depths. In the case of the correction of spring recording data, RMSEZ was smaller (23.41 cm) than before correction (36.41 cm), and the depth of the side ditches was still statistically significantly different. The authors conclude that water and ground vegetation can significantly affect UAV survey accuracy. In the winter period, side ditch depth measurement is possible in areas where water is not present. If water is present, manual measurement of water height and correction of obtained UAV data can improve data accuracy. On the other hand, spring or vegetation period UAV surveys are highly affected by ground vegetation height and the authors do not recommend surveys in that period.
