An accurate noise power spectral density (PSD) tracker is an indispensable component of a single-channel speech enhancement system. Bayesian-motivated minimum mean-square error (MMSE) noise PSD estimators have been the most prominent in recent time. However, they lack the ability to track highly non-stationary noise sources due to current methods of a priori signal-to-noise (SNR) estimation. This is caused by the underlying assumption that the noise signal changes at a slower rate than the speech signal. As a result, MMSE noise PSD trackers exhibit a large tracking delay and produce noise PSD estimates that require bias compensation. Motivated by this, we propose an MMSE noise PSD tracker that employs a deep residual network (ResNet) a priori SNR estimator. The proposed noise PSD tracker, called DeepMMSE makes no assumptions about the characteristics of the noise or the speech, exhibits no tracking delay, and produces an accurate estimate that requires no bias correction. Our extensive experimental investigation shows that the proposed DeepMMSE method outperforms state-of-the-art noise PSD trackers and demonstrates the ability to track abrupt changes in the noise level. Furthermore, when employed in a speech enhancement framework, the proposed DeepMMSE method is able to outperform state-of-the-art noise PSD trackers, as well as multiple deep learning approaches to speech enhancement.

It is well known that there may be significant individual differences in physiological signal patterns for emotional responses. Emotion recognition based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is still a challenging task in the context of developing an individual-independent recognition method. In our paper, from the perspective of spatial topology and temporal information of brain emotional patterns in an EEG, we exploit complex networks to characterize EEG signals to effectively extract EEG information for emotion recognition. First, we exploit visibility graphs to construct complex networks from EEG signals. Then, two kinds of network entropy measures (nodal degree entropy and clustering coefficient entropy) are calculated. By applying the AUC method, the effective features are input into the SVM classifier to perform emotion recognition across subjects. The experiment results showed that, for the EEG signals of 62 channels, the features of 18 channels selected by AUC were significant (p < 0.005). For the classification of positive and negative emotions, the average recognition rate was 87.26%; for the classification of positive, negative, and neutral emotions, the average recognition rate was 68.44%. Our method improves mean accuracy by an average of 2.28% compared with other existing methods. Our results fully demonstrate that a more accurate recognition of emotional EEG signals can be achieved relative to the available relevant studies, indicating that our method can provide more generalizability in practical use.

Histopathological image analysis is an examination of tissue under a light microscope for cancerous disease diagnosis. Computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) systems work well by diagnosing cancer from histopathology images. However, stain variability in histopathology images is inevitable due to the use of different staining processes, operator ability, and scanner specifications. These stain variations present in histopathology images affect the accuracy of the CAD systems. Various stain normalization techniques have been developed to cope with inter-variability issues, allowing standardizing the appearance of images. However, in stain normalization, these methods rely on the single reference image rather than incorporate color distributions of the entire dataset. In this paper, we design a novel machine learning-based model that takes advantage of whole dataset distributions as well as color statistics of a single target image instead of relying only on a single target image. The proposed deep model, called stain acclimation generative adversarial network (SA-GAN), consists of one generator and two discriminators. The generator maps the input images from the source domain to the target domain. Among discriminators, the first discriminator forces the generated images to maintain the color patterns as of target domain. While second discriminator forces the generated images to preserve the structure contents as of source domain. The proposed model is trained using a color attribute metric, extracted from a selected template image. Therefore, the designed model not only learns dataset-specific staining properties but also image-specific textural contents. Evaluated results on four different histopathology datasets show the efficacy of SA-GAN to acclimate stain contents and enhance the quality of normalization by obtaining the highest values of performance metrics. Additionally, the proposed method is also evaluated for multiclass cancer type classification task, showing a 6.9% improvement in accuracy on ICIAR 2018 hidden test data.

Emotions are a concrete manifestation of human communication, and the research on emotion recognition has gradually increased. Recently, researchers have attached great importance to multi-modal emotion recognition, and in the field of speech, video, text and physiological signal emotion recognition, a lot of research work has been carried out. Multimodal emotion recognition complements each other by fusing information between different modalities, thereby improving the final recognition rate. This paper preprocesses the three modes of speech, video and text of the IEMOCAP dataset, uses deep learning neural networks to extract emotional features, and performs information fusion at the feature layer. There are five types of emotions: angry, excited, sad, neutral and happy. From the results, the accuracy of the three-mode emotion recognition model of the training set is 0.9541, and that of the verification set is 0.68383. Compared to speech emotion recognition improved by 0.11751.
