Over decades, social robotics has evolved as a concept that presently covers different areas of application, and interacts with different domains in technology, education, medicine and others. Today, it is possible to envision social robots in tasks that were not expected years ago, and that is not only due to the evolution of social robots, but also to the evolution of the vision humans have for them. This survey addresses recent advances in social robotics from different perspectives. Different contexts and areas of application of social robots are addressed, as well as modalities of interaction with humans. Different robotic platforms used in social contexts are shown and discussed. Relationships of social robotics with advances in other technological areas are surveyed, and methods and metrics used for the human evaluation of the interaction with robots are presented. The future of social robotics is also envisioned based on surveyed works and from different points of view.

In recent years, Optical character recognition (OCR) has experienced a resurgence of interest especially for contemporary Arabic data. In fact, OCR development for printed and handwritten Arabic script is still a challenging task. These challenges are due to the specific characteristics of the Arabic script. In this work, we attempt to address these challenges by creating a deep learning OCR for Arabic document recognition called ADOCRNet. It is a novel deep learning framework whose architecture is built of layers of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) trained by the so-called Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) algorithm. In order to assess the performance of our OCR, the proposed system is performed on two printed text datasets which are P-KHATT (text line images) and APTI (word images). It’s also evaluated on a handwritten Arabic text dataset IFN/ENIT (word images). According to the practical tests, the conceived model achieves strength recognition rates on the three datasets. ADOCRNet reaches a Character Error Rate (CER) of 0.01% on the P-KHATT dataset, 0.03% on the APTI dataset and a Word Error Rate (WER) of 1.09% on the IFN/ENIT dataset, which considerably outperforms the outcomes of the current systems.

The traditional quark model 1,2 accounts for the existence of baryons, such as protons and neutrons, which consist of three quarks, as well as mesons, composed of a quark–antiquark pair. Only recently has substantial evidence started to accumulate for exotic states composed of four or five quarks and antiquarks 3 . The exact nature of their internal structure remains uncertain 4–29 . Here we report the first measurement of quantum numbers of the recently discovered family of three all-charm tetraquarks 30–32 , using data collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider from 2016 to 2018 (refs. 33,34 ). The angular analysis techniques developed for the discovery and characterization of the Higgs boson 35–37 have been applied to the new exotic states. Here we show that the quantum numbers for parity P and charge conjugation C symmetries are found to be +1. The spin J of these exotic states is determined to be consistent with 2 ħ , while 0 ħ and 1 ħ are excluded at 95% and 99% confidence levels, respectively. The J P C = 2 ++ assignment implies particular configurations of constituent spins and orbital angular momenta, which constrain the possible internal structure of these tetraquarks.

The increasing integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) into daily life has led to significant changes in our social interactions. The advent of innovative IoT solutions, combined with the enhanced capabilities and expanded reach of 5G wireless networks, is altering the way humans interact with machines. Notably, the advancement of edge computing, underpinned by 5G networks within IoT frameworks, has markedly extended human sensory perception and interaction. A key biometric within these IoT applications is electroencephalography (EEG), recognized for its sensitivity, cost-effectiveness, and distinctiveness. Traditionally linked to brain–computer interface (BCI) applications, EEG is now finding applications in a wider array of fields, from neuroscience research to the emerging area of neuromarketing. The primary aim of this article is to offer a comprehensive review of the current challenges and future directions in EEG data acquisition, processing, and classification, with a particular focus on the increasing reliance on data-driven methods in the realm of 5G wireless network-supported EEG-enabled IoT solutions. Additionally, the article presents a case study on EEG-based emotion recognition, exemplifying EEG’s role as a biometric tool in the IoT domain, propelled by 5G technology.

The increasing age of our society is connected to a rising number of people suffering from disorders. One such disorder is Parkinson’s disease (PD). Predictions indicate that the number of individuals affected by PD will more, than double in the future. Neurologists and data scientists consider handwriting as one of the motor symptoms of PD and recognize it as a valuable resource for detecting this disorder. Within this framework, we introduce an innovative system for Parkinson’s disease detection, which encompasses several key stages. The process commences with data augmentation and preprocessing, subsequently leading to the segmentation of online handwriting into Beta strokes. Following that, feature extraction is carried out utilizing the Beta-elliptical approach and the fuzzy perceptual detector. Finally, we employ bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) for the classification task. To assess the performance of our system, we created a new online Arabic handwriting dataset designed for detecting Parkinson’s disease. The results we obtained affirm the efficacy of our proposed system. Through comprehensive evaluations conducted on the PaHaW dataset, we achieved good accuracy, thereby highlighting that our system surpasses the performance of existing systems.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass and width via its decay to two Z bosons is presented. Proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, is used. The invariant mass distribution of four leptons in the on-shell Higgs boson decay is used to measure its mass and constrain its width. This yields the most precise single measurement of the Higgs boson mass to date, 125.04 ± 0.12 GeV , and an upper limit on the width Γ H < 330 MeV at 95% confidence level. A combination of the on- and off-shell Higgs boson production decaying to four leptons is used to determine the Higgs boson width, assuming that no new virtual particles affect the production, a premise that is tested by adding new heavy particles in the gluon fusion loop model. This result is combined with a previous CMS analysis of the off-shell Higgs boson production with decay to two leptons and two neutrinos, giving a measured Higgs boson width of 3.0 − 1.5 + 2.0 MeV , in agreement with the standard model prediction of 4.1 MeV. The strength of the off-shell Higgs boson production is also reported. The scenario of no off-shell Higgs boson production is excluded at a confidence level corresponding to 3.8 standard deviations. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2025 CERN
