Blockchain technology is emerging as a high-impact solution for the tourism industry, a topic chosen for its growing research relevance and potential to revolutionise the tourism sector in several areas. This study examines how the combination of Blockchain technology and P2P platforms advances sustainability and marketing in the tourism accommodation market. It attempts to fill a gap in the literature by focusing on its application in two areas, namely digital markets and technology, which are expanding. The originality of this research lies in its comprehensive review of blockchain applications in tourism from a practical point of view, which has been largely unexplored in the existing literature. Through a bibliometric review of forty-two papers, various Blockchain applications were identified, such as improving transparency, trust, and efficiency in hotel operations and eliminating intermediaries to reduce costs. The adoption of smart contracts and the use of cryptocurrencies have also emerged as key trends. These findings highlight the transformative potential of Blockchain technology to build trust between hosts and guests, streamline processes, and improve the customer experience. However, they emphasise the need for the careful planning and consideration of the challenges associated with implementing this technology. Future research should further explore the specific applications of Blockchain technology in tourism to optimise its impact on industry and ensure long-term sustainability.

This study examines the determinants of the financial performance of the Portuguese hotel industry. Despite the economic relevance of the hotel industry and financial performance as an indicator of business survival, academic research on the factors that influence it in the context of this industry, particularly in Portugal, is not extensive. This study encompassed a sample of 738 hotel companies from 2016 to 2021, using data from the Orbis database. This research was based on the assumption that a company’s size, liquidity, the tangibility of its assets, and debt level influence financial performance in the hotel industry, as well as the assumption that gross domestic product and consumer sentiment also affect the business success of hotel companies. By applying a panel data methodology, the findings indicate that all variables showed significant influence on financial performance, except liquidity. The analysis also reveals that smaller companies were more negatively affected by the demand decline induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. To improve the financial performance of the Portuguese hotel industry, the findings suggest that policymakers must work towards ensuring diversified sources of financing for the hotel business, such as investment subsidies, so that companies can minimize debt, especially during periods of slow economic growth. Additionally, companies must promote management strategies that enhance self-financing. Both measures could help companies increase their size, taking advantage of good business opportunities to explore economies of scale.

This chapter examines the effect of board gender diversity on corporate debt maturity It analyses a gender-based behavioral dimension for corporate debt maturity choice. The study finds that firms with a larger female representation on the board of directors and managers tend to have a larger proportion of short-maturity debt. The evidence also shows that when a woman holds the position of chair of the board and simultaneously is a shareholder, the chance for issuing a short-term debt is higher. These findings meet the argument that boards with female directors and leaders are more likely to issue short-term debt. This method of financing decision can be considered as a corporate governance device with potential impact on reducing managerial opportunism.

The tourism industry is increasingly compelled to align with sustainability objectives; however, many destinations fall into the trap of greenwashing, endorsing superficial environmental initiatives that lack substantive impact. This paper examines how implementing authentic circularity strategies can mitigate the reputational and environmental risks of greenwashing in the tourism sector. The study focuses on a case analysis of a holiday resort in the Costa del Sol, Spain, a region renowned for its mass tourism and emerging sustainability efforts. The primary objective is to determine how a resort can transition from a performative sustainability approach to an embedded circular model that delivers measurable value. Methodologically, the study employs a single-case study design, integrating qualitative interviews with resort managers. The results include evidence of enhanced resource efficiency, increased stakeholder trust, and market differentiation due to credible sustainability actions. This case contributes to the understanding of how genuine circularity, grounded in lifecycle thinking, closed-loop systems, and local partnerships, can serve as an antidote to greenwashing. The conclusion advocates integrating circular economy principles into tourism governance and proposes a framework for resorts seeking authentic sustainability transformation.
