Background: Nowadays, Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most popular topics that can be integrated into healthcare activities. Currently, AI is used in specialized fields such as radiology, pathology, and ophthalmology. Despite the advantages of AI, the fear of human labor being replaced by this technology makes some students reluctant to choose specific fields. This meta-analysis aims to investigate the knowledge and attitude of medical, dental, and nursing students and experts in this field about AI and its application.Method: This study was designed based on PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were searched with relevant keywords. After study selection according to inclusion criteria, data of knowledge and attitude were extracted for meta-analysis.Result: Twenty-two studies included 8491 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled analysis revealed a proportion of 0.44 (95%CI = [0.34, 0.54],P < 0.01, I2 = 98.95%) for knowledge. Moreover, the proportion of attitude was 0.65 (95%CI = [0.55, 0.75],P < 0.01, I2 = 99.47%). The studies did not show any publication bias with a symmetrical funnel plot. Conclusion: Average levels of knowledge indicate the necessity of including relevant educational programs in the student’s academic curriculum. The positive attitude of students promises the acceptance of AI technology. However, dealing with ethics education in AI and the aspects of human-AI cooperation are discussed. Future longitudinal studies could follow students to provide more data to guide how AI can be incorporated into education.

Background and aim: Neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s) lead to neuronal loss; neurocognitive disorders (e.g., delirium, dementia) show cognitive decline. Early detection is crucial for effective management. Machine learning aids in more precise disease identification, potentially transforming healthcare. This comprehensive systematic review discusses how machine learning (ML), can enhance early detection of these disorders, surpassing traditional diagnostics’ constraints. Methods: In this review, databases were examined up to August 15th, 2023, for ML data on neurodegenerative and neurocognitive diseases using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Two investigators used the RAYYAN intelligence tool for systematic reviews to conduct the screening. Six blinded reviewers reviewed titles/abstracts. Cochrane risk of bias tool was used for quality assessment. Results: Our search found 7,069 research studies, of which 1,365 items were duplicates and thus removed. Four thousand three hundred and thirty four studies were screened, and 108 articles met the criteria for inclusion after preprocessing. Twelve ML algorithms were observed for dementia, showing promise in early detection. Eighteen ML algorithms were identified for Parkinson’s, each effective in detection and diagnosis. Studies emphasized that ML algorithms are necessary for Alzheimer’s to be successful. Fourteen ML algorithms were discovered for mild cognitive impairment, with LASSO logistic regression being the only one with unpromising results. Conclusion: This review emphasizes the pressing necessity of integrating verified digital health resources into conventional medical practice. This integration may signify a new era in the early detection of neurodegenerative and neurocognitive illnesses, potentially changing the course of these conditions for millions globally. This study showcases specific and statistically significant findings to illustrate the progress in the area and the prospective influence of these advancements on the global management of neurocognitive and neurodegenerative illnesses.

Background: Preclinical research has identified the mechanisms via which bacteria influence cancer treatment outcomes. Clinical studies have demonstrated the potential to modify the microbiome in cancer treatment. Herein, we systematically analyze how gut microorganisms interact with chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors, specifically focusing on how gut bacteria affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of cancer treatment.Method: This study searched Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed until August 2023. Studies were screened by their title and abstract using the Rayyan intelligent tool for systematic reviews. Quality assessment of studies was done using the JBI critical appraisal tool.Result: Alterations in the gut microbiome are associated with gastric cancer and precancerous lesions. These alterations include reduced microbial alpha diversity, increased bacterial overgrowth, and decreased richness and evenness of gastric bacteria. Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with reduced richness and evenness of gastric bacteria, while eradication only partially restores microbial diversity. The gut microbiome also affects the response to cancer treatments, with higher abundances of Lactobacillus associated with better response to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy and more prolonged progression-free survival. Antibiotic-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis can reduce the anti-tumor efficacy of 5-Fluorouracil treatment, while probiotics did not significantly enhance it. A probiotic combination containing Bifidobacterium infantis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus cereus can reduce inflammation, enhance immunity, and restore a healthier gut microbial balance in gastric cancer patients after partial gastrectomy. Conclusion: Probiotics and targeted interventions to modulate the gut microbiome have shown promising results in cancer prevention and treatment efficacy.Systematic review registration:https://osf.io/6vcjp.

Neurological disorders, ranging from common conditions like Alzheimer’s disease that is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and remains the most common cause of dementia worldwide to rare disorders such as Angelman syndrome, impose a significant global health burden. Altered facial expressions are a common symptom across these disorders, potentially serving as a diagnostic indicator. Deep learning algorithms, especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown promise in detecting these facial expression changes, aiding in diagnosing and monitoring neurological conditions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the performance of deep learning algorithms in detecting facial expression changes for diagnosing neurological disorders. Following PRISMA2020 guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies published up to August 2024. Data from 28 studies were extracted, and the quality was assessed using the JBI checklist. A meta-analysis was performed to calculate pooled accuracy estimates. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on neurological disorders, and heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 statistic. The meta-analysis included 24 studies from 2019 to 2024, with neurological conditions such as dementia, Bell’s palsy, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease assessed. The overall pooled accuracy was 89.25% (95% CI 88.75–89.73%). High accuracy was found for dementia (99%) and Bell’s palsy (93.7%), while conditions such as ALS and stroke had lower accuracy (73.2%). Deep learning models, particularly CNNs, show strong potential in detecting facial expression changes for neurological disorders. However, further work is needed to standardize data sets and improve model robustness for motor-related conditions.

In recent years, artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms have been used more extensively to diagnose diabetic retinopathy and other diseases. Still, the effectiveness of these methods has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the performance and limitations of machine learning and deep learning algorithms in detecting diabetic retinopathy. This study was conducted based on the PRISMA checklist. We searched online databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, for relevant articles up to September 30, 2023. After the title, abstract, and full-text screening, data extraction and quality assessment were done for the included studies. Finally, a meta-analysis was performed. We included 76 studies with a total of 1,371,517 retinal images, of which 51 were used for meta-analysis. Our meta-analysis showed a significant sensitivity and specificity with a percentage of 90.54 (95%CI [90.42, 90.66], P < 0.001) and 78.33% (95%CI [78.21, 78.45], P < 0.001). However, the AUC (area under curvature) did not statistically differ across studies, but had a significant figure of 0.94 (95% CI [− 46.71, 48.60], P = 1). Although machine learning and deep learning algorithms can properly diagnose diabetic retinopathy, their discriminating capacity is limited. However, they could simplify the diagnosing process. Further studies are required to improve algorithms.

Background: Cellular senescence, characterized by irreversible cell cycle arrest, plays a pivotal role in ageing and the development of age-related pathologies. Mitigating oxidative stress, a primary contributor to cellular ageing, is crucial for inhibiting the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). A comparative analysis of synthetic and natural antioxidants is necessary to evaluate the efficacy of synthetic and natural antioxidants in this context.Method: A systematic review encompassed studies published up to July 2023, utilizing prominent databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. To enhance the efficiency of data screening and selection, we employed Rayyan. ai, an advanced tool designed for systematic reviews.Result: The review encompassed 33 studies examining the impact of diverse antioxidants on cellular senescence. Findings indicated that synthetic antioxidants, such as N-acetylcysteine, and natural alternatives, like Vitamin C, demonstrated efficacy in attenuating oxidative stress and senescence markers. Notably, natural antioxidants frequently exhibited comparable or superior efficacy to their synthetic counterparts in most studies. Furthermore, the synergistic effects of antioxidant combinations sometimes yield enhanced benefits. It is worth noting that certain recently developed synthetic compounds, such as MHY2233, have shown promising results, exhibiting greater potency than established antioxidants in mitigating senescence markers. Conclusion: Dietary practices and the aging process can influence these intricate processes and how they interact, serving as potential primary and secondary preventative strategies. The Mediterranean diet, dietary antioxidants, and limiting calorie intake are promising nutritional strategies. Better insight into the molecular mechanisms of aging may facilitate the development of efficient biomarkers and antioxidants for diagnosis or treatment.Systematic Review Registration: https://osf.io/b67wm/
