The unreasonable application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer leads to high nutrient losses and severe potential of agricultural non-point source contamination, which threatens water quality in the upper Yellow River Basin. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the effects of N application rates and various control measures on rice yield and N leaching in paddy fields in the Yellow River irrigation area. Four treatments were employed in this study, CK (no N fertilizer application, 0 kg N∙ha−1), CRU (controlled-release urea application, 180 kg N∙ha−1), OPT (optimal N fertilizer application, 210 kg N∙ha−1), and FP (N fertilizer application based on farmer experience, 240 kg N∙ha−1), to examine paddy yield, N use efficiency (NUE), N concentrations in leaching water at various soil depths, and N contents along the 0–100 cm depth of the soil profile. The results indicated that the amount of TN leached was 25.14–48.04 kg∙ha−1 after different N applications, and the TN leaching coefficients of FP, OPT, and CRU were 10.88%, 11.27%, and 7.07%. Compared to FP and OPT, the CRU significantly reduced the concentrations of TN, ammonium N (NH4+-N), and nitrate N (NO3−-N) in the surface and soil water, with average TN leaching decreasing by 31.55% and 27.35% in the years 2022 and 2023, respectively. NO3−-N was identified as the primary form of N leached from the paddy fields. Compared to FP and OPT treatments, the CRU treatment increased the average paddy yield by 19.99–20.66% and improved the average NUE by 19.04–16.38%. This study revealed that the application of high amounts of N positively affected soil N leaching, and controlled-release urea demonstrates superior efficacy compared to conventional fertilization. The application of controlled-release urea at a rate of 180 kg N∙ha−1 not only ensures a good paddy yield but also reduce N losses, which should be recommended to local farmers.

The overuse of fertilizers in open-field tomato leads to soil deterioration through nutrient leaching and increases the risk of agricultural non-point source contamination. Currently, the combined effects of different fertilization methods on soil nitrogen leaching and tomato production are still unclear. Therefore, the most effective fertilization method for open-field tomato should be discovered by examining how different fertilization methods affected tomato yield and quality, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and soil nitrogen leaching. Compared with CK (no fertilization), fertilization significantly increased the yield, total sugar (TS), total soluble solids (TSS), and vitamin C (vC) contents of fruits (p < 0.05), and OPT (optimal fertilization, controlled release nitrogen application, 240 kg ha−1) had the largest effect on increasing yield, quality, and net profit. However, when the fertilizer application rate reached 375 kg ha−1, these indices decreased. Nitrogen leaching concentrations, leaching amount, and titratable acids (TAs) increased with increased nitrogen application rates. Compared with other treatments, OPT reduced the total leaching amounts of total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) by 30.09–51.79%, 24.89–50.03%, and 30–65%, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that OPT achieved the highest overall score in terms of yield, quality, and nitrogen leaching conditions. The partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) further reveals that applications of high amounts of nitorigen have a positive effect on soil nitrogen leaching. The amount of nitrogen leaching vegetatively affects tomato yield and quality, while plant uptake of nitrogen positively affects tomato production. These findings confirm the importance of using controlled-release fertilizers and reducing nitrogen inputs to control nitrogen leaching and enhance open-field tomato yields.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for crop growth, as N fertilizer application regulates crop nitrogen uptake, affecting leaf photosynthetic rates, crop growth, and yield formation. However, both N deficiency and excess can reduce corn yields. Hence, optimizing the N fertilizer application strategy is crucial for crop production. In this study, a field plot trial with five N fertilization application strategies was conducted in the maize field from 2021 to 2022 in the Ningxia Yellow Irrigation District, Northwest China. These strategies contain zero N application rates (CK, 0 kg ha−1), the farmer practical N fertilizer application strategy (FP, 420 kg ha−1), the optimized N fertilizer application strategy (OPT, 360 kg ha−1), organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer combination application (ON, 300 kg ha−1), and controlled-release N fertilizer and 33 urea application (CN, 270 kg ha−1). The maize yield and N balance under each treatment were investigated to propose the optimized N application strategy. The results showed that the CN treatment’s grain yield (15,672 kg ha−1) was the highest in both years, which was 109.97% and 8.92% higher than the CK and FP treatments, respectively. The apparent utilization rate and partial productivity of N fertilizer decreased with the increase in the N application rate. Also, the apparent utilization rate of N fertilizer in CN was 23.02%, 19.41%, and 13.02% higher than the FP, OPT, and ON, respectively. Applying controlled-release urea and organic fertilizers improved the physical and chemical properties of the soil, increased the organic matter content and soil fertility, and ultimately increased the spring maize yield. Meanwhile, the TN, NO3−-N, and NH4+-N concentrations in leaching water significantly correlated with the N application rate. With the extension of the maize growth period, the concentrations of TN, NO3−-N, and NH4+-N in leaching water gradually decreased. The N leaching amount in FP was the highest, while the CN was the lowest. The NO3−-N is the primary N leaching form, accounting for 46.78~54.68% of the TN leaching amount. Compared with the CN, the ON significantly increased the inorganic N content in the 0–40 cm soil layer, and it reduced the residual inorganic N content below 40 cm soil depths compared with FP and OPT treatments. Considering the relatively high spring maize yield and N utilization efficiency, as well as the relatively low N leaching amount and soil inorganic N residues, the ON and CN treatments with 270–300 kg ha−1 N application rate were the optimized N application strategies in the spring maize field in the study area.

Many tree species worldwide are suitable for making biochar (BC), with planted eucalypts in particular being very productive and extensive. Above- and below-ground carbon sequestration by Eucalyptus plantations depends on plantation management options. An intensively managed cultivar could sequester over 100 mt of C/ha at a cost of $21–40/mt. BC production systems ranging in size from small mobile units to large centralized facilities and many kiln technologies influence the quality and price of the BC produced as well as the ability to control emissions. While BC from wood has many applications, its use as a soil amendment in forest plantations is appealing as a long-term sequestration strategy and opportunity to grow more robust trees and increase survival rates. Research in Florida USA and elsewhere addresses responses of forest and agronomic crops to wood BC soil amendments with and without other fertilizers. In combination with the carbon sequestered through tree growth, sequestration of 2.5 mt/ha of wood BC as a soil amendment in Eucalyptus plantations has estimated costs ranging from $3.30–5.49/ton of C.

Irrigated paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food for roughly half of the world’s population. Concerns over water quality have arisen in recent decades, particularly in China, which is the largest rice-producing country in the world and has the most intensive use of nutrients and water in rice production. On the one hand, the poor water quality has constrained the use of water for irrigation to paddy systems in many areas of the world. On the other hand, nutrient losses from paddy production systems contribute to contamination and eutrophication of freshwater bodies. Here, we review rice production, water requirement, water quality issues, and management options to minimize nutrient losses from paddy systems. We conclude that management of nutrient source, rate, timing, and placement should be combined with the management of irrigation and drainage water to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus losses from paddies. More research is needed to identify cost-effective monitoring approaches and mitigation options, and relevant extension and policy should be enforced to achieve water quality goals. The review is preliminarily based on China’s scenario, but it would also provide valuable information for other rice-producing countries.

Eucalypts can be very productive when intensively grown as short rotation woody crops (SRWC) for bioproducts. In Florida, USA, a fertilized, herbicided, and irrigated cultivar planted at 2471 trees/ha could produce over 58 green mt/ha/year in 3.7 years, and at 2071 trees/ha, its net present value (NPV) exceeded $750/ha at a 6% discount rate and stumpage price of $11.02/green mt. The same cultivar grown less intensively at three planting densities had the highest stand basal area at the highest density through 41 months, although individual tree diameter at breast height (DBH) was the smallest. In combination with an organic fertilizer, biochar improved soil properties, tree leaf nutrients, and tree growth within 11 months of application. Biochar produced from Eucalyptus and other species is a useful soil amendment that, especially in combination with an organic fertilizer, could improve soil physical and chemical properties and increase nutrient availability to enhance Eucalyptus tree nutrition and growth on sandy soils. Eucalypts produce numerous naturally occurring bioproducts and are suitable feedstocks for many other biochemically or thermochemically derived bioproducts that could enhance the value of SRWCs.
