The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) has drastically impacted how the world operates. The Internet of Things (IoT), encompassed significantly by the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), is an important subsection component of the IR 4.0. WSNs are a good demonstration of an ambient intelligence vision, in which the environment becomes intelligent and aware of its surroundings. WSN has unique features which create its own distinct network attributes and is deployed widely for critical real-time applications that require stringent prerequisites when dealing with faults to ensure the avoidance and tolerance management of catastrophic outcomes. Thus, the respective underlying Fault Tolerance (FT) structure is a critical requirement that needs to be considered when designing any algorithm in WSNs. Moreover, with the exponential evolution of IoT systems, substantial enhancements of current FT mechanisms will ensure that the system constantly provides high network reliability and integrity. Fault tolerance structures contain three fundamental stages: error detection, error diagnosis, and error recovery. The emergence of analytics and the depth of harnessing it has led to the development of new fault-tolerant structures and strategies based on artificial intelligence and cloud-based. This survey provides an elaborate classification and analysis of fault tolerance structures and their essential components and categorizes errors from several perspectives. Subsequently, an extensive analysis of existing fault tolerance techniques based on eight constraints is presented. Many prior studies have provided classifications for fault tolerance systems. However, this research has enhanced these reviews by proposing an extensively enhanced categorization that depends on the new and additional metrics which include the number of sensor nodes engaged, the overall fault-tolerant approach performance, and the placement of the principal algorithm responsible for eliminating network errors. A new taxonomy of comparison that also extensively reviews previous surveys and state-of-the-art scientific articles based on different factors is discussed and provides the basis for the proposed open issues.

This paper extensively reviews and analyses Light Fidelity (LiFi), a new technology that uses light to transmit data as a high-speed wireless connection system from a wide spectrum of domains. An in-depth analysis and classifications of pertinent research areas for LiFi networks are presented in this paper. The various aspects constituting this paper include a detailed literature review, proposed classifications, and statistics, which further is deliberated to encompass applications, system architecture, system components, advantages, and disadvantages. LiFi and other technologies are compared, multi-user access techniques used in LiFi networks are investigated and open issues are addressed in detail. The paper is concluded with a comprehensive taxonomy of literature comparison that has served as the basis of the proposed open issues and research trends.

Internet of Thing (IoT) or also referred to as IP-enabled wireless sensor network (IP-WSN) has become a rich area of research. This is due to the rapid growth in a wide spectrum of critical application domains. However, the properties within these systems such as memory size, processing capacity, and power supply have led to imposing constraints on IP-WSN applications and its deployment in the real world. Consequently, IP-WSN is constantly faced with issues as the complexity further rises due to IP mobility. IP mobility management is utilized as a mechanism to resolve these issues. The management protocols introduced to support mobility has evolved from host-based to network-based mobility management protocols. The presence of both types of solutions is dominant but depended on the nature of systems being deployed. The mobile node (MN) is involved with the mobility-related signaling in host-based protocols, while network-based protocols shield the host by transferring the mobility-related signaling to the network entities. The features of the IoT are inclined towards the network-based solutions. The wide spectrum of strategies derived to achieve enhanced performance evidently displays superiority in performance and simultaneous issues such as long handover latency, intense signaling, and packet loss which affects the QoS for the real-time applications. This paper extensively reviews and discusses the algorithms developed to address the challenges and the techniques of integrating IP over WSNs, the attributes of mobility management within the IPv4 and IPv6, respectively, and special focus is given on a comprehensive review encompassing mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages on related work within the IPv6 mobility management. The paper is concluded with the proposition of several pertinent open issues which are of high research value.

Software-defined networks (SDN) is an evolution in networking field where the data plane is separated from the control plane and all the controlling and management tasks are deployed in a centralized controller. Due to its features regarding ease management, it is emerged in other fields such as cloud and fog computing in order to manage asymmetric communication across nodes, thus improving the performance and reducing the power consumption. This study focused on research that were conducted in SDN-based clouds and SDN-based fogs. It overviewed the important contributions in SDN clouds in terms of improving network performances and energy optimization. Moreover, state-of-the-art studies in SDN fogs are presented. The features, methods, environment, dataset, simulation tool and main contributions are highlighted. Finally, the open issues related to both SDN clouds and SDN fogs are defined and discussed.

Since light fidelity (LiFi) and wireless fidelity (WiFi) do not interfere with one another, a LiFi/WiFi hybrid network may provide superior performance to existing wireless options. With many users and constant changes, a network can easily become overloaded, leading to slowdowns and fluctuations in data transfer speeds. Access point assignment (APA) is required with the increase of users, which can negatively impact the system performance and quality-of-service (QoS) due to mobility and line-of-sight (LOS) blockage. Many variables could influence the APA process; these variables are considered as criteria, such as the network capacity, the degree of blockage, the speed of the connected user, etc. Unlike conditional APA methods, recent studies have considered treating these variables as “evaluation criteria”. Considering these criteria can offer better and more accurate results, eventually enhancing the APA process and QoS. However, the variety of these criteria, the conflict amongst them, their weights (importance), and priority have not been addressed so far. Moreover, treating the criteria equally might result in inaccurate outcomes. Therefore, to solve this issue, it is essential to investigate the impact of each criterion on the APA process. In this work, a multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problem is formulated to determine a network-level selection for each user over a period of time The decision problem is modeled as a hierarchy that fragments a problem into a hierarchy of simple and small subproblems, and the selection of the AP network among various alternatives is a considered as an MCDM problem. Based on the previous works, we are not aware of any previous research attempts using MCDM methods in the LiFi research area for network selection. Therefore, this work proposes an access point assignment framework using an MCDM approach for users in a hybrid LiFi/WiFi network. The experiment was conducted based on four phases: Five criteria were identified and evaluated with eleven APs (alternatives). The outcome of this phase was used to build the decision matrix and an MCDM was developed and built based on user mobility and blockages with various scenarios using all the criteria; The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was employed to identify the criterion of the subjective weights of each criterion and to determine the degree of importance supported by experts’ judgement. Determining the weights in the AHP process considered various investigations, including the consistency ratio (CR) and the AHP consensus indicator, which is calculated using the rank-based maximum likelihood method (RGMM) and Shannon entropy techniques. The VIekriteri-Jumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje (VIKOR) method is adopted in the selection of the optimal AP for the proper selection of whether a LiFi or WiFi AP must serve the users. The integrated AHP–VIKOR was effective for solving the APA and was the best solution based on using weighted criteria simultaneously. Moreover, the ranking outcomes of the developed integrated AHP–VIKOR approach were evaluated using sensitivity analysis. The result of this work takes the APA for hybrid LiFi networks to a new perspective.
