Dr. Kathryn M. Taylor serves as Principal Research Fellow at Cardiff University's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She earned her BSc with Honors in Physiology and Biochemistry from Reading University in 1974, followed by a PhD in Kidney Preservation from King’s College Hospital, London University in 1982. Beginning her cancer research career at the Tenovus Centre for Cancer Research in 1997, she has dedicated her work to studying the LIV-1 family of zinc transporters in breast cancer. She moved to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences with the Tenovus Unit in 2000. In 2015, she took on additional responsibilities as a Senior Lecturer, contributing to the MSc program in Cancer Cell Biology and Therapeutics. Her leadership in zinc biology has been recognised through various positions with the International Society for Zinc Biology (ISZB), including serving as President (2017–2019), Past President (2019–2021), and Board Member (2013–2017), along with receiving the prestigious Fredericksen Prize for excellence in zinc biology in 2022. An inaugural member of ISZB since 2007 and a member of the Biochemical Society since 2002, her research focuses on multiple aspects of zinc biology: the mechanisms of zinc transporter activity, intracellular zinc homeostasis regulation, zinc transporters’ role in cell migration and cancer progression, and their involvement in initiating cell division.
