Hongyu Pan holds a Bachelor's Degree (1984) from the Plant Protection Department of Jilin Agricultural University and worked at there as a teaching assistant (1984–1987). In 1990, he obtained a Master's Degree at the Department of Plant Protection of Northeast Agricultural University. From 1990 to 2004, he worked as a Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor in the Plant Protection Department of Quartermaster University of the People's Liberation Army and served as the director of the teaching and research section, party branch secretary, and department party committee member. In 2006, he received his Doctorate in Plant Pathology at Nanjing Agricultural University. After graduation, he was a Visiting Scholar in the Agricultural Phytopathology Laboratory of China Agricultural University (2002–2004). In 2004, he joined Jilin University and is now a Professor at the College of Plant Sciences. From 2006 to 2008, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California Berkeley, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Washington, United States University of Illinois Corn Disease Resistance Breeding Laboratory, USDA, and Soybean Disease Laboratory. In 2014–2015, he was a Senior Research Expert at the University of Manitoba. In 2017, he went to the University of Florida and did short-term cooperative research. His research interests include plant pathogenic fungi molecular biology and disease resistance genetic engineering, and the biological control of plant diseases.
