The fifth generation (5G) wireless systems are anticipated to meet unprecedented capacity and latency requirements. In order to resolve these challenges in 5G, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered as a promising technique due to its ability to enhance spectrum efficiency and user access. As opposed to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) which relies on orthogonal resource sharing, NOMA has a potential of supporting a higher number of users by multiplexing different users in the same resource in a non-orthogonal manner. With advanced receiver techniques, such as successive interference cancellation (SIC), the intra-user interference can be minimized at the NOMA receiver. To date, there are comprehensive surveys on NOMA, which describe the integration of NOMA with different communication technologies and discuss different NOMA classifications. However, the existing literature is scarce in reviewing state-of-the-art applications of NOMA from the perspective of its application to cellular networks (CNs), device-to-device (D2D) communications, and wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Therefore, the purpose of this survey is to fill this gap in knowledge. Specifically, NOMA with its underlying concepts are elaborated in detail. In addition, detailed system model of different NOMA-based wireless networks is presented. Furthermore, irrespective of the underlying spatial topology of the considered NOMA-based wireless network, general analytical expressions are presented to characterize the network performance. Finally, some challenges related to NOMA design are highlighted and potential research directions are pointed out to address these issues.

In this article, an attempt is made to propose a novel method of lifetime distributions with maximum flexibility using a popular T–X approach together with an exponential distribution, which is known as the New Generalized Logarithmic-X Family (NGLog–X for short) of distributions. Additionally, the generalized form of the Weibull distribution was derived by using the NGLog–X family, known as the New Generalized Logarithmic Weibull (NGLog–Weib) distribution. For the proposed method, some statistical properties, including the moments, moment generating function (MGF), residual and reverse residual life, identifiability, order statistics, and quantile functions, were derived. The estimation of the model parameters was derived by using the well-known method of maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). A comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation study (MCSS) was carried out to evaluate the performance of these estimators by computing the biases and mean square errors. Finally, the NGLog–Weib distribution was implemented on four real biomedical datasets and compared with some other distributions, such as the Alpha Power Transformed Weibull distribution, Marshal Olkin Weibull distribution, New Exponent Power Weibull distribution, Flexible Reduced Logarithmic Weibull distribution, and Kumaraswamy Weibull distribution. The analysis results demonstrate that the new proposed model performs as a better fit than the other competitive distributions.

In the past few decades, the transmission of data over an unsecure channel has resulted in an increased rate of hacking. The requirement to make multimedia data more secure is increasing day by day. Numerous algorithms have been developed to improve efficiency and robustness in the encryption process. In this article, a novel and secure image encryption algorithm is presented. It is based on a modified chaotic logistic map (CLM) that provides the advantage of taking less computational time to encrypt an input image. The encryption algorithm is based on Shannon’s idea of using a substitution–permutation and one-time pad network to achieve ideal secrecy. The CLM is used for substitution and permutation to improve randomness and increase dependency on the encryption key. Various statistical tests are conducted, such as keyspace analysis, complexity analysis, sensitivity analysis, strict avalanche criteria (SAC), histogram analysis, entropy analysis, mean of absolute deviation (MAD) analysis, correlation analysis, contrast analysis and homogeneity, to give a comparative analysis of the proposed algorithm and verify its security. As a result of various statistical tests, it is evident that the proposed algorithm is more efficient and robust as compared to previous ones.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) provides superior spectral efficiency and is considered as a promising multiple access scheme for fifth generation (5G) wireless systems. The spectrum efficiency can be further enhanced by enabling device-to-device (D2D) communications. In this work, we propose quality of service (QoS) based NOMA (Q-NOMA) group D2D communications in which the D2D receivers (DRs) are ordered according to their QoS requirements. We discuss two possible implementations of proposed Q-NOMA group D2D communications based on the two power allocation coefficient policies. In order to capture the key aspects of D2D communications, which are device clustering and spatial separation, we model the locations of D2D transmitters (DTs) by Gauss–Poisson process (GPP). The DRs are then considered to be clustered around DTs. Multiple DTs can exist in proximity of each other. In order to characterize the performance, we derive the Laplace transform of the interference at the probe D2D receiver and obtain a closed-form expression of its outage probability using stochastic geometry tools. The performance of proposed Q-NOMA group D2D communications is then evaluated and benchmarked against conventional paired D2D communications.

Ubiquitous wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) have become a critical technology for enabling smart cities and other ubiquitous monitoring applications. Their deployment, however, can be seriously hampered by the spectrum available to the sheer number of sensors for communication. To support the communication needs of UWSNs without requiring more spectrum resources, the power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique originally proposed for 5th Generation (5G) cellular networks is investigated for UWSNs for the first time in this paper. However, unlike 5G networks that operate in the licensed spectrum, UWSNs mostly operate in unlicensed spectrum where sensors also experience cross-technology interferences from other devices sharing the same spectrum. In this paper, we model the interferences from various sources at the sensors using stochastic geometry framework. To evaluate the performance, we derive a theorem and present new closed form expression for the outage probability of the sensors in a downlink scenario under interference limited environment. In addition, diversity analysis for the ordered NOMA users is performed. Based on the derived outage probability, we evaluate the average link throughput and energy consumption efficiency of NOMA against conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) technique in UWSNs. Further, the required computational complexity for the NOMA users is presented.

Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA), one of the favorable candidates of next-generation wireless networks combined with group device-to-device (D2D) networks, can sufficiently increase a system’s spectral efficiency. In fact, in a cooperative scenario, successive interference cancellation (SIC) is used in NOMA receivers to reduce the complexity of relaying, as each user has to decode high-order user data. This work presents a quality of service (QoS)-based cooperative NOMA-aided group D2D system (Q-CNOMA). The Q-CNOMA system not only reduces the burden on the group transmitter by relaying the signal to a receiver in neighboring cells but also improves the overall system performance. In order to model the major components in a D2D scenario such as receivers clustering around a transmitter, the spatial distribution of D2D transmitters is modeled using a Gaussian–Poisson process (GPP). A closed-form expression of outage probability is calculated and benchmarked against conventional systems to prove the superiority of the proposed Q-CNOMA system.
